I recently learned that babies are "months old" opposed to "years old" because the development, especially for 0.5 year to 2 years is IMMENSE! A one year old might just be learning to crawl or it might be learning to walk. So month gives a better understanding of where they are and what you can expect of them.
@shawnhilliard Жыл бұрын
I think baby's are initially measured in months (even beyond 1 year) because early child developmental milestones is often outlined by ranges measured in months and parents are probably so locked into that frame of mind that it's their immediate response.

I’m a pediatrics resident and the whole development thing is absolutely correct. Kids at 12 months/ 15 months/18 months etc have different developmental milestones. Generally we’ll refer to a rule of 2s. Up to 2 weeks we’ll use “x” days old, up to 2 months we’ll use “x” weeks old. Up to 2 years we’ll say “x” months old. That said… you all absolutely have a valid point. People get ridiculous with the whole “x months old” thing. 😂

Its not until your twenties that people will start going "I'm in my (decade)". Twenties, Thirties, ect. :P

Others have already mentioned it, but for the baby thing it is at ~2 years that people usually stop counting in months (although sometimes it's up to 3 years). I have clothes that are labeled 2T (for 2 year olds) and some that are labeled 24 months, and some that are labeled 36 months, but most at that size are 3T. A month is a lot of development in a baby, so the difference between a 12-month old baby and a 23-month old is huge even though they're both "one year olds." And at the beginning they're measured in weeks until ~2 months. Even after 3 years old there's a big difference in development between just turned 3 and almost 4. So when I talked about my kids I would say they just turned 3, or now I say they're almost 3 and a half.

When kids are under 2, the difference between their size, behaviors, abilities, milestones, etc and still very different from month to month. So while it seems silly, even to a lot of parents (and believe me, I’m sure you’ll find those parents that say the months or weeks far too long), it ends up feeling like the only way to really portray how old they are. Saying they’re 1 when they’re 16 months is quite a bit younger at that age and doesn’t accurately portray what they’re up to or how big they are. Personally, if I know someone doesn’t know a lot about kids I usually round up or down. But it just depends. Also, every time you guys talk about Wingspan Asia, it makes me want to try it! I’m gonna need to keep an eye out for that one. Love Wingspan.

It’s old at this point, but the game that worked so well,as a couples game for many of my friends was Lost Cities. It’s casual,enough.but it has enough strategy to keep gamers interested. It’s competitive but it never feels mean. And you can play it quickly. It reminds me a lot,of multiplayer competitive solitaire. People who don’t play a lot of these type of games have still played solitaire. So they will understand the idea of creating sets of numbered cards. 😊

Mom chiming in! I used to make fun of the "x month old thing" until I had my own and understood. You go by months due to milestones and stuff - doctors refer to them by the month, and all the charts you follow as a parent do this as well, not to mention kids clothes are sized that way, so it can become habit. I think once the kid hits around 2 years old that tends to stop. At least, that's when we stopped.

Here are some other games I'd recommend for couples from my collection: - Mysterium and/or Mysterium Park. One player is a 'ghost' trying to lead the other player, the 'psychic', to choose the right person, place, or object shown on the table, but can only communicate by handing them cards with dream-like abstract artwork - which is super beautiful by the way. - Project L. You solve puzzles with polyominoes in order to earn more, better polyominos and get victory points. It's an engine builder that only takes about 15 minutes for two players so it doesn't overstay its welcome. - Summoner Wars 2nd Edition. A tactical skirmish game where your deck of cards includes both your Units and powerful Events that can change the tide of battle. There are tons of factions, they're exceedingly well balanced, and unlike a lot of skirmish games there's no minis to paint and every single faction and expansion fits inside the core box with ease. - Machina Arcana. If you like the idea of a co-operative dungeon crawler with steampunk lovecraftian themes, but don't have an entire shelf for it like most of those games demand, this is the game for you. The 3rd Edition and all the prior content fits in a box that's half the size of Gloomhaven - and there's plenty more space in that box for future content. I also find that, unlike many dungeon crawlers, Machina Arcana works BEST at two players, making it a great couples game during Spooky Season. - Azul: Queen's Garden. You're drafting tiles which have one of six colors, and are also numbered 1-6, and trying to create chains of matching numbers and colors while earning bonus points for clever tile placement. With exactly two players you have to balance building your own garden while trying to deny your opponent the pieces they need to finish theirs. I've found that with 3 or 4 players you tend to get one player who tries to 'spoil' another player's formation, but ends up with tons of dead weight tiles at the end ruining their score, which is just Kingmaking with extra steps. Absolutely best played with 2 players.

They measure the first year in months because of how fast babies change. For example if I look at Jeff now and 3 months from now he probably will not have even changed his hat. A baby May have gone from sitting up to walking. I gave up with the months at 18 months. At that point I just said my kids were almost 2.

Moms who can't let go of their baby's baby phase get wrapped up in the "how many months old". Most reasonable parents stop about 18mos, because that's right around when we stop tracking milestones by month and move to milestones by year. I heard a mom say her kid was 38 months old, and I was just like, "He's three. Three years old? Yes, three. As in a toddler. Almost a preschooler. Stop it."
