The white trees are not likely bleached... what is likely happening is called Silicification. It is where the tree's organic skeletal material (pulp/cellulose) is slowly absorbing calcium and silica through a process called dissolution. Over decades, the wood becomes a mineral. These minerals are white/clear colored making the trees looking white as the wood "pulp" is slowly replaced by minerals. It is similar to Petrification of a tree except the key minerals are calcium and silica.

I mentioned after seeing your first video of your favorite images of 2022 that I had seen many favorites from well known photographers and that none of them came close in comparison to your dramatic images. After seeing your second video of your favorites, you have set the benchmark that all other photographers can compare their images to. Again, well done Gavin! You have worked your backside off to be the best!

Happy New Year Gavin and Amanda! These two recap videos were like happy walks down memory lane, recalling the original videos we saw in which you first captured the amazing images. I think my favorite of all is the one with the dead trees in the water, Beavercide, I think you called it. That one is otherworldly because it is so unusual. But all of them are unusually gawgeous.

Number 1: The ability to travel to and take images in interesting environments. Seriously, most people who've made it big in photography were financially privileged to be able to do so and thus could afford to travel to places like Iceland, Africa or other unique places that allow them to take amazing images.
@fototripper2 жыл бұрын
Most of these images were shot just a few hours from home. Some of the best images I shot in my life were during a time of financial struggle. I haven't been on a plane or left my country in 3 years. Tell me more.

I have the sigma 18-35mm 1.8 art lens for apsc and I noticed the same thing with the colors - especially with the greens. I snagged a portrait of a deer (with the wide angle) and it looks like a painting. Full saturation but not overly so. Just gorgeous.

Best video I've seen in quite a while, Gavin. Loved the balance between you and Amanda (she has such a delightful laugh and knows how to make REAL hot chocolate). The photography adventures were exciting ( a concession to good taste you didn't mention shrinkage when you were soaking your arse in cold water). You had excellent images with skilled processing and enough explanation of the shot without getting boring. Good job all around and I enjoyed it. Amanda lends a lot of support and color to your photography trips if in no other way than just being there. Very similar to the way my wife supports me on our bird photography trips. She takes a book to read while I'm photographing birds and I love having her there. BTW, we just celebrated our 61st wedding anniversary Christmas day. Looking forward to your next photo adventure with Amanda.

The Grabbing Hand is magnifique. I've began to shoot woodland a little more this year but I feel a water source is needed for me. I'm able to compose easier if there is a babbling Brook, a little stream and cluster of waterfalls amongst the trees but I love it when you xan find a tree that's growing out of rock, defying the odds. It's saying "no, I will grow where I want and there's nothing this rock can do about it". I love that. Overcoming the odds. I found such a tree this year and I've shot it in all conditions and I intend to return. Its become a study. An obsession. Very much like the Leen Into It image. That for me is perfect. Amazing shot. If the rock tree was in that shot that would be something I'd look for. Those 2 shots for me I'd be over the moon with.

Great walk-through (both videos) of your images from last year Gavin. Must say, I’ve been following you for the last two or three years (at least) and hadn’t quite realised how much goes into each image. I knew you focus stacked and exposure blended, but I hadn’t realised quite how much, or that you use a combination of the two at times. Guess if I’d really thought about it…🤔. Makes me realise how lazy and naive I have been. Will try to be more diligent to see what I can get. Keep on doing what you do - thoroughly enjoy it (“crevice wash” “ much needed” 😂🤣😂🤣). Happy New Year to you and Amanda ❤️ and good luck with the ongoing church conversion.
