One thing when comparing the Mets and Phillies is the aging position players on the Phillies side and the Mets did beat them 6 out of 8 to finish the year. Phillies are better on paper but clutchness and athleticism goes to Met
@TheMacdodКүн бұрын
I'm a Mets fan and our roster was pretty old too. In terms of age I think not that different. The main difference was approach at the plate. Phillies chased and made our pitching look better than it was. Dodgers did not make that mistake.

Looking at the last couple weeks of moves, I think there are more teams want to sell and control their payroll then all in buyers. So the remaining FAs will have a tough time getting their wishes of money except Bournes.
@travis669416 сағат бұрын
so who is giving burnes 250 million then?
@sni694114 сағат бұрын
@ only 3 teams is all in(Dodgers, Yankees, Mets) and couple other teams are in reasonable competing mode which means they have already invested a lot on their roster but they do have a limit (Astros, Phillies, Bluejays), and couple teams starting to compete but also have limit this year ( Boston, Cubs, SF). The rest is making adjustments only to staying competitive hoping miracle. Dodgers has about 20m left to spend Yankees has about one more big contract the most Mets has 1-2 big contracts Astros are done spending Phillies will only spend on one big bat if they can trade some money off first Bluejays has one big contracts but not sure what they do Boston has one big left Cubs has one big left or two medium contracts ( around 10-15m) That’s about it for FAs, and there are more FAs still left want big money. Bournes will get his money, just not a bidding war Bregman will be like last years Cody, Alonso will be like last years’ Chapman Flaherty , Teoscar, Santander, Kim, Pivetta, Torres, Profar, O’Neil , all was looking for 20m plus, which right now I don’t think most of them will get it. Don’t forget there are teams actively trying to trade some of their high salary players like Arenado, Castillo, Bo, Arreas, Cease, etc. those will also take close to 20m per person. So a lot of the remaining FA will be getting cheap deals. So Cubs need to be patient right now.

as a lifelong Dodgers fan, I'm bummed to see Walker leave after his injury riddled pro career in blue. He was extremely hyped throughout the organization and the LA media when he was drafted. He was seen as the right handed Kershaw who had cy youngs in his future and eventually a long career with the Dodgers. BUT... sh1t definitely didn't work out in such a way. He's still got top shelf stuff and if he doesn't screw his arm up again; Boston may have gotten a steal

The top 3 are going to be a problem in a couple of years. Huge contracts for 30 plus year olds with injury issues
@bruce5402Күн бұрын
@alesitercrimson24 Actually, Cole's contract is for only 3 more years, and yes, maybe the last year will be a problem. Even through an injury, he is so well conditioned that he came back mid-season and pitched better than most. Fried is 30 or 31, and yes, that is a long contract, but he looks like he can age gracefully since his fastball is not his best pitch. Rodon is the question mark but he pitched well last year. Gil and Schmidt are realitively young. There are some good arms in the organization. I was referring that these arms are good for 3+, which concides with Judge's prime. You can look at any of the staffs Ken mentioned and point to age and contract issues. So compared to them for 3 years, the Yankees are strong if healthy. Just like everyone else. You maid valid points, but again, I was comparing, and with that in mind, the Yankees are top 3 by most experts that I have read or listen to. Very fair points you made though.

Huge signing for Boston Buehler is only 30 years old people acting like he isn't a great pitcher. He was coming back from a long layoff was he expected to step right in and be the ace right away? My only critique of the signing is they should have tried to get another year or two but I'm sure Buehler wanted the one year so he can turn it into a bigger multi-year deal when he succeeds.

@Foul Territory @Ken Rosenthal Sorry, Ken, but the stories of Manaea's 'superb' 2nd half are preposterous once you actually do the homework: a 4.05 ERA his last 14 starts (yes, the postseason counts) is a MOR, nothing like a TOR. Even if you do the ‘2nd half’ fairy tale the favor of confining yourself to just his last 10 regular season starts, his ERA then was 3.79, his FIP 4.03, his SIERA was 4.07, and even that decent ERA required a lottery-winning .191 BABIP Lest anyone think that BABIP was the result of a new, unlocked brilliance, think again. Greg Maddux had a .286 career BABIP, against the MLB average of .295 and even at his peak, winning four Cy Youngs in succession, his BABIP was only a remarkably good .260. Manaea’s freakish BABIP of .191 over his last ten starts was the prime ingredient of the false tale of second half brilliance. In truth he pitched adequately, was durable, _and was incredibly lucky._ It would be interesting to know whether the brilliant Maddux ever had even just one 10-start stretch in his entire career where he fluked into a .191 BABIP. It doesn't look like it from my sampling. The Mets needed a reasonably durable #3 and they got him for slightly less than Fried’s AAV, but without getting Fried’s age 30 to 32 prime-adjacent years. A 25m AAV for Manaea is probably necessary in the era where a pitcher like Taijuan Walker got 4/72m, but it’s hardly a steal despite the rumors Manaea was headed for a 4/100m contract. So-are the Mets aiming for Cease, or is even Nick Pivetta and a very good 6-man rotation too much to ask for?
