The other main issue is that Melvin never once had the chance to submit his own lineups. Everything came from "upstairs"...in Preller's office. He was hired by Preller, without the opportunity to bring in his own coaches....so there were way too many fingers in the pie. Even looking at Melvin in the dugout this year, he looked tense, and uneasy, knowing he was powerless with this group. Def not a healthy spot for an experienced manager.

I'm not sold on Preller being a "great evaluator." Their farm system is shot and he gave Boggerts an 11 year contract at age 30. That's an insane contract for a short stop at that age and one that is great but not HOF great. So all I see is Preller signing a bunch of huge names with money, not getting along with his staff or managers, hiring weirdly placed performance coaches and having very little home grown talent.

IMO Manny has been fine. We got more than we expected with the previous contract. I personally wasn’t a fan and wanted the Padres to sign Harper but Manny has surprisingly been the opposite of the villain people made him out to be. Remember, when he joined the team, Hosmer was the leader who set the tone for the clubhouse. Manny wasn’t expected to be that guy. AJ obviously sent Hosmer packing last year so, now what? Manny’s fault? Hardly. If anything AJ’s lack of feel caused this outcome. He builds a roster like fantasy sports and not necessarily like a real team.

What some people don't realize is that leadership is both a skillset and a responsibility that one chooses to accept or not. Particularly in sports, the most talented/best performing player is usually given the leadership role by default. This is the wrong approach, because it does not consider whether that player has the leadership qualities/characters, skills, or even the desire to accept the responsibilities and pressures of a leader. It's like asking the a chef to manage a restaurant team simply because he can cook a killer steak.

I’m a 43 year old lifelong Padres fan and I know exactly what it is. It’s Peter giving AJ the keys to the Lambo and a Black card with no limits or restrictions… he means well, but he should’ve learned from last time he tried this with Kemp, Norris, Upton etc. .. then he did great by adding Manny & Tati etc. but idk why he felt like after so much success last season, he still had to shake things up and “make a splash” by signing ANOTHER shortstop! Instead of filling the team needs. He totally mishandled the Tatis situation. (Regardless of his troubles) You don’t treat your young generational player like that. It was a big F you by signing Bogey to that long term contract. Don’t get me wrong; I love Bogey as a player but that move made 0 sense. Especially since we had Kim already. Then you get rid of Profar and Hosmer who were the glue of that clubhouse. Idc what anyone says. THEY WERE! Last year we DO NOT make it to playoffs without those 2…. So now they’re gone & you move guys around to unfamiliar positions on defense and you resign Manny just as season begins and his ego just inflated.(I love Manny but it’s true! I knew it from interviews & his walk up song for the first few homestands) So now all this going on and now u have Xander Boegarts and he slumps for a couple weeks so u have him batting 5th!!! That guy probably never batted 5th his WHOLE LIFE!! No wonder he was struggling. Baseball is probably 80% mental. These guys, our “core 4” were all screwed up from the jump. I was seeing it happen in real time! Then , not to mention our rising star Cronenworth, who’s an outstanding ball player gets kinda pushed to side batting 6th or 7th … bro u can’t do your players like that. And yeah it’s a team sport but when guys prove themselves as “stars” & “superstars” they have earned that status & u gotta keep that in mind. Kim is such a great guy & a grinder & good sport. He woulda been ok batting 5th or 6th all season. His ego wouldn’t have been affected.. whoever was setting lineups first 4-5 months really screwed up. What BoMel said beginning of season was true. He could’ve plugged those 4 in the lineup in almost any order & woulda worked. (Except Manny in leadoff) But man, after all this shit I just hope they LEAVE IT ALONE NOW!! Let these guys work on their relationships & gel. I have faith in our guys that they can be professionals & pull it together. Especially having Joe in that clubhouse. If Peter tightens that leash on AJ & they don’t try to shake things up anymore we will be making the playoffs for the next 5-6 years minimum. JUST ADD PITCHING AND LEAVE IT TF ALONE NOW!!! AND KEEP BOMEL BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY!! EVEN IF IT MEANS FIRING AJ!!!
@johnnynephrite6147 Жыл бұрын
Nonsense and much to say about nothing. Bad starts, prolonged slumps, and a lot of "waiting for the other stars to do it" attitude meant too little too late. Had they pick up a few more games here and there, or won just a few of the extra innings games, they'da made the playoffs. Its a miracle they made it to .500 on the season. The main thing to do now is DON'T PANIC. Keep as much of this team together here for a few more years and reap the rewards. Sign Soto, and sign Snell, and we are in the playoffs for sure next season.

the reason I laugh at this notion of Manny NOT being "the leader of leaders" is due to NOBODY saying a damn thing about Wil Myers OPENLY saying "I dont want to be a leader...Im not THAT GUY!". But he took the 85 million on the same day he said what he said, almost a decade ago.. And subsequent to that day, he turned in one decent season out of 9. So, if Manny defines himself by the workload he gives his employer..plus the elite glove and bat?...trust me, ANYBODY should be happy with that. Paul Goldschmidt is not a rah-rah guy either. He's a classic case of a "by example" guy. But no one gives him a hard time. So, these problems that we're hearing about a team Ive been a fan of since 1973, are not unique, nor are they unusual. There are a heap of other teams with the same damn issues. But when MLB and fans of MLB see all this money spent on a team like this, and they dont go out and win 2 World Series in one year...everybody and their Mom, mashes the panic button and starts picking on the Padres. And that is more indicative of how petty fans and haters can be...not necessarily indicative of a franchise falling apart. 2024 will come around and it'll be another team getting a similar kind of hate. Thats just how a baseball season goes. And by the way?...when dude says they Padres are losing a huge part of their team, when Snell/Hader leave?...so, what. Snell may win a Cy Young, maybe not. And Hader will get his money. But this is not a team that CANNOT survive and prosper if they dont get retained. Scott Barlow will step in for Hader and do just fine. And they have pieces they can use to fill out the rotation. So, lets not act like the Apocalypse is upon the fanbase in SD, ok?

AJ Smeller.....
@mike-vq8zw Жыл бұрын
AJ is the most overrated GM in all of sports. With all is Wheeling and dealing and free-agent signings he's still only ends up with half a lineup who can play and that having the third highest payroll in baseball. He may or may not know how to draft will never know because he never keeps any of them but he certainly hasn't a clue on how to put a team together. As for managers, his record speaks for itself

Really need Tatis to start juicing again to boost his numbers.

Padres are awesome they outsold every mlb team in shirt sales around the world. Every team has been having some sort of issue with high profile players, NYY, Mets, Angels, St.Louis, etc.

i feel like theres something going on with tatis. lately ive seen him not have that smile anymore. he plays frustrated. on the other side aj has to go. 10 years nothing to show for it he micromanages and wants to be involved in every on field decision. hes a good scout ans thats about it
@brando7266 Жыл бұрын
Nothing to show for it?? We almost made the ws last yr, and he's won 3 playoff series in his tenure, on the previous 45 yrs,the padres had won 3 playoff series.

I wouldn’t smile much either if I had to deal with multiple kids with multiple baby mamas at 24 years old.

Too many chips on too many broad shoulders. As a Dodger fan, I am really glad we passed on Machado. I wouldn't mind Tatis or Soto, though...😁

Bob Melvin is a hell of a manager. It's a shame he has incompetence in the front office above him and prima donnas in the clubhouse with Tatis and Machado.
