Aficionados of thrift stores, it's been longer than a crocodile's smile - but this weekend I'm back. I've been on the hunt for trash and treasure, and found both! If you love dusty junk, you're not going to want to miss this episode - I've compiled some of the best pieces I've found from six junk stores in Zürich, Switzerland. Plus, we run into Katie Kebab, Marcelline's cousin, who is suffering in existential crisis.

Hello Oddie, when I was younger maybe 9 or 10 me and my sister pulled weeds out of a flower bed for an older lady. Once she ask us to get something out of her attic. We came across a old type writer like the one you showed but a different brand. She gave it to us. As a young child it was a wonderful gift. I still have it to this day. Thing's that have sentimental value to us won't mean anything to my children when I'm gone.

Good morning Oddie, I love the model cares made from the original 1920s blueprints. The display case is magnificent, so glad you showed it to us. I knew that skull was used for anatomy instruction. Some of the preserved animal and reptiles may have come from Cabinets of Curiosities, depending upon their age. My mother had a Typewriter very much like that one. She wrote business letters, and kept financial records for my father and his older brother, my uncle. She could type like a machine gun, just amazing. Into my 20s, telephone booths were plentiful. My father worked for the Telephone Company, so when they were eliminated, he was able to get them for family and friends members for very little money. When I was young, shops like this on were common, fostered my deep love of antique furniture and many other things of time gone by. One of my twin sisters also appreciates antiques. Oddie, I noticed the microscope for sale next to the milk shake maker. I had one as a child, one,my favourite items of my childhood. Sorry for being carried away, but this adventure brought back memories and the joy of these shops.

How I’ve enjoyed vicariously touring the junk stores with you through the years, Oddie! Those dried flower arrangements are actually pretty cool, mostly b/c of how well-preserved they are! Regarding the old mixer, Hamilton Beach has been a well-known manufacturer of various kitchen appliances here in the US as far back as I can remember. They still make mixers with a cool ‘retro’ appearance, but the one you showed is authentic. Probably a lot heavier than the modern ones, too! Oh dear, Marcelline has a cousin! Does she have a thing for you, too? 😱 Yeah, I'm thinking there has to be some pharmaceutical explanation for much of 1970's fashion 😂 Only $60 for that cute little oven? I wonder if it still works? I’d love to have that old camera, too (21:22) Nice old drinking glass! Ha,ha, Oddie and his beer🍺☺ Always cool to find decades-old items that are good as new 👍

I’m very happy to hear that Amy! Although these videos do not bring many views, I also enjoy doing them - when I find the time. Some viewers have suggested that the flower arrangement is a funeral wreath 😮 Yes, the Hamilton Beach mixer that I had was very heavy. Yes, that’s Marcelline’s cousin Katie Kebab, no love interest though as she is too melancholic to be involved in affairs of the heart. Hopefully once the 70s revival is over, she can return to being a Goth - that was really her best era. 😄 Beer glasses have such happy energy! Take care, my friend and have a lovely Sunday 😊

Good to have a video from you Oddie! My typewriter is a slightly younger Royal from I believe '34. I'd die before dismembering it. I've worked in many strange bars/coffee bars over years, one in a funeral home from the 1950s with it's original fountain, gate, original wood and stained glass. The owner also salvaged large light fixtures from nearby chuches set to be demonlished. All the tables in my caf'e area had polished games boards (chess, backgammon etc) we would bring the pieces out for to play and drink whatever you're inclined to. Fireplace too. Shop sadly did not survive Covid. As for the human skull, he was waiting for yourself in your audience. When you open your dream shop, I will forward my references.

Hey there Oddie! Thanks for another great junk stroll! Let's see, I'd have taken home the second horse and absolutely the skull! The sweet glass you got really brought back some memories. Here in the states there was a fad in the 50s or 60s that everyone wanted a bar in the basement. They would have some wood paneling and the bar kind of built in then decorate the rest with the light up beer signs, little bouncing hula dolls, and of course the novelty glasses. I had a friend who's dad did their basement like a carribean bar, not quite pirate but lots of fish nets and bouys on the walls. Course as teenagers we thought it was kinda dumb, but it sure is fun to think back on it now! Thanks again! Stay safe and have a great summer!
@ObsoleteOddity4 ай бұрын
Yes, I remember those bars, some people still have them today. Often people would have them also in a corner of their living room. My uncle and auntie had one and it was also ship themed and the actual cocktail bar was in the shape of a ships hull with portholes et cetera. I saw one about 20 years ago in a junk store. Great memories! Very glad you enjoyed the tour of my friend, thank you so much!

Wonderful you got in another junk tour! It’s sad there aren’t many near enough to you that have anything interesting these days. I’m thankful you found some things to show us. The recliner was pretty cool & so convenient for when you’ve found that perfect leg elevation & don’t want to have to re-find it when you have to get up to go to the bathroom. 😆 Have you found an intact clock like that nostalgic one of your grandfather’s with the man & woman going round & watering the garden before? The one shown seemed to be missing parts. If it had been whole & reasonably priced, would you have bought it? I like the glass you did buy, with the man & dog on it. Old (& new) taxidermy always creeps me out. Interestingly, the human skull does not. With the taxidermy, I get the urge to bury it all in a big pit. My goodness I cracked up heartily at the image of the terrier on top of the mannequin head that you had inserted into the video in editing. 🤣 It was so perfect. 🙌🏻
@ObsoleteOddity4 ай бұрын
Yes, it’s very difficult these days, because the younger generation are not really collecting anything. And so with each generation there is less and less interesting stuff that ends up in thrift stores. Plus with the Internet, a lot of the thrift store managers and owners are selling directly online. This has impacted the market massively. The same goes for the people who would’ve previously taken unwanted items to a thrift store, they now try and sell it online. Yes, if I found a Weather station that was very similar to my grandfather’s , then I would buy it - but yes that particular one in the store looked like the man was missing. Indeed, taxidermy when he gets old looks scruffy and itchy 😄 whereas the skull is perfectly clean and boiled! I felt so sorry for that mournful mannequin. I do hope the 70s revival is over soon for the sake of her mental health.

Hamilton Beach 100% still makes that milkshake blender. The design hasn't changed much, but they have newer milkshake blenders too. This one looks like it's from the 1920s or 30s, when the soda shops were big. They stopped being around in the 40s. Although soda shops are coming back. Craft sodas are starting to become the new bougie thing, soda counters are starting to pop up rather than ice cream shops.

That made me laugh - "post nuclear day" coffee? Here in Texas, in our mid-century neighborhood with its dicey electric grid, We have a manual burr grinder specifically for those wintery days when ice has taken down the lines or those stormy spring days when high winds have knocked the lines together. They'll be getting my gas cooktop and burr grinder from cold, dead fingers. Rely on that. 😉

Your mid century neighbourhood sounds delightful! Despite the dicey electric grid 😄 I bet that coffee taste even better, because you ground it yourself ☕️

I'm interested in the weather station, we never had that kind of thing in my country. Those sewing machine, i love old, mechanical ones but apart from straight stitch Singer machines, i have yet to find any here.

I think the dried flower arrangement was the preservation of a wedding bouquet ❤ And the juicer says Norwalk, not Norfolk, Oddie ❤ it's a juicer worth brand new, $1995.00. ❤ P.S. may I ask, as a collector and constant reader, of the first edition books, how do prices fair?❤🎉 Love you very much ❤️ 💗 you and Oddette🎉
@ObsoleteOddity4 ай бұрын
It’s also a good guess, some are saying a funeral wreath - wedding bouquet sounds slightly more appetising! Yes I realised after I edited the video that I had said it wrong, as I was filming I couldn’t really see the writing clearly and so it just looked like Norfolk to me. Do you think something is missing from the juicer, isn’t that supposed to be a glass covered compartment? To be truthful, I haven’t really seen many first edition books, although there are some no doubt. Not being a specialist in this area I wouldn’t really know where to look, and not all of the junk stores actually accept books, because they would just be flooded with them. Very glad you enjoyed it, thank you so much for your kind thoughts!

Oh if you mean with the junk store tours, yes it has been quite awhile - it’s a labour of love really, because they don’t get many views. I enjoy doing them though when I have the time.

@@ObsoleteOddity I LOVE antiquing!I I got that bug from my mom! Recently I came across a men's shaving cup with a piece of china to protect the mustache from getting wet, a double cup to store a shaving brush in, and I also found an invalid cup with a side hand! No that’s not what I mean, if you are writing the comment out on a smart device or mobile phone - just press your finger twice on the text and you will either get the ‘select’ option or ‘select all’ option - click on one of those to copy. If your comment gets deleted, you can just go to make another comment and then press your finger once on the empty comment box and the option will come up to ‘paste’ the comment.

We call it the "everyone needs to hear what I'm saying/doing/listening to in public cliche"...it drives us insane how narcissistic people are. If you're in public, quiet down(and the kicker is when THEY get annoyed because you ask them to be more considerate to their surroundings 😂😂)
@ObsoleteOddity4 ай бұрын
Yeah, they drive me nuts, I’ve had a few alterations with very inconsiderate people who think that you really want to listen to their conversation or music loudly.

I collect car models. Probably the only way I can own my favorite car....the Duesenberg. Despite the foreign sounding name, the car is American. Interesting car.....almost all of the chassis were made in 1927, then all the bodies were custom made from 1927 thru the late 30s. I have a special one, called a Twenty Grand.....that's how much it cost in the 1930s.
