Kpop isn’t actually a genre. It’s a whole industry where aspiring stars audition for an entertainment company and are put into a trainee program to perfect their craft and eventually debut as a soloist, in a group, or in a band. What makes it stand out from Western music is how common experimentation and genre fusion are. In fact, sticking to one style is often seen as a negative. Kpop fans love versatility. Here’s a couple of interesting examples: EXO’s Tempo (r&b with an acappella breakdown) Dreamcatcher’s Piri (pop rock with metal instruments) Seventeen’s HOME;RUN (jazz swing) Verivery’s Thunder (dark calliope)

1) it's absolutely possible for kpop solo artists to exist... a few examples are kang daniel, taemin, hwasa, zico, jessi... however most of them also come from groups originally or are still in them. But groups are definitely more common in kpop 2) k-pop stands for korean pop but a lot of people argue that it actually shouldn't be called a genre at all because it's mostly used for korean popular music but includes a lot of different genres. as you can probably see in this video it's pretty versatile 3) the reason why the bts songs you reacted to had different vibes is because groups in themselves are very versatile and everytime they have a comeback (release new music) they tend to change concepts so all of their music might (but doesn't have to) vary. one time you may see the group do a cute, happy concept and the next song you find them rapping over hardcore beats... there's really not any limit as to what they can do... 4)PSY (the guy who sang Gangnam Style) is not necessarily big in kpop as a mainstream artist. i mean of course he had/has a lot of impact but i don't think that psy himself got fanbases like bts does for example. He did however, create his own label called 'PNation' which is famous for being a very humane label compared to other companies that treat their artists like dirt. As a CEO, PSY houses artists like Jessi, Hyuna, Dawn... all three of those are solo artists and are doing quite well with their music :) 3) also kpop isn't just those hundred videos... there's a lot of great artists out there that don't quite pull the numbers these guys do but are still very very very popular (sorry for the long comment)

Tbh, I get it that Psy doesn't have as big of a fanbase as BTS; but he is extremely well known in Korea at least. His influence is still there-but tbh; instead of an Idol he is more of an Artist (like Jamie, Seori, Punch, etc).

@@itsKotaG lol the song at like 93 or so that you said “sounds like a trap version of kpop” and didn’t realize it was actually bts doing that song lol you noticed the “just one day” is bts even though you didn’t know the song … but yeh bts does a ton of genres .. constantly changing and evolving their music so that will happen with them a lot. Bts usually is kinda different than traditional kpop because of what they sing about delves into more heavy dark topics which is def not the norm for kpop. Sure there may be songs from groups here and there who do it but bc it’s pretty taboo in Korea to talk about that stuff openly… and bts does mostly that. All 7 members have written and produced on every album and the youngest directed a more recent music video they did. Bts came from a smaller company and their ceo had only been doing his own company for a few years before bts was formed so it was fairly new and his like company motto was “ music and artists for healing” bc it’s kinda what he wanted to try. So bts tackle those topics but they also have a fictional storyline that runs throughout a bunch of their songs… it’s dark themes but really beautifully done IMO and I’m guessing you’d be kinda surprised if you started the storyline stuff… but yeh coming from an American the kpop world has blown my mind with the crazy talented and elaborate songs, videos, performances I’ve seen that blow stuff out here away. It’s crazy and very clear so much more goes into every single thing they do. There’s tons of good music and it’s a deep rabbit hole once you get started lol

Kpop idols can either be solo artists or in a group but when in a group they can also have their own solo songs 😁

kpop idols is groups, but soloist called soloist or artists, if u said soloist can be called an idol, PSY is an idol then :)

@@yujiminmylove ummm there r plenty of idol soloist, chungha, sunmi, kang Daniel, Somi, IU, Wonho(now at least), Dawn, Hyuna, taeyang, etc. They are still idols even though they r not in a group. They aren’t called Kpop idols because they where put in a group. U can be a Kpop idol soloist or be a member of a Kpop idol group.

Psy (Gangnam Style guy) is quite big in Korea His last comeback was on 2017. In 2019, he founded his own company P Nation. Currently artist under P Nation is Jessi, Hyuna, Dawn, Crush, Heize. On 2021, it was reported that he and JYP, the founder of JYP Entertainment (One of BIG3 Company in korea that manage Twice, Itzy, Stray kids, etc) , will collaborate together to form a new boy group.

Kpop does stand for korean pop yes. ;) It's a very ambiguous term though and music we refer to as kpop is generally referred to as "idol-music" in SK. Kpop stands for Korean Popular Music, it's an umbrella term for music in Korea but you'll see sometimes kpop fans will call them specifically, like khiphop, k-rnb

OMG Yes definitely check out iKON. Their music is so freaking good, literally their albums are stacked with golden tracks and their title songs are everything. They are very versatile with music genres as well, I really like their hip hop hype songs but I'm actually a sucker for their sad/ballad songs more cause their vocal tones are so unique and the way they sing their songs with so much emotions in their voices is really something else. That's why I love when they perform live
