I have just been a road worker for the past 5 years. the local council have to follow some stupid procedures. If we show up to a reported pothole and another pothole is next to it, we cannot touch the unreported one. They increased the wagon weights from 34 tonne to 44 tonnes and never thought the road strength wasn't up to the increased weights. All the EVs are 2 tonne or over when normal cars are 1.2 tonnes upwards.

@marksavage1108
@marksavage1108 Ай бұрын
@@fredflintstone1 If you crush a road without the base structure being able to hold the weight, the top surface will crack, the cracks let water in, the water then undermines more by washing away the base structure and of course destroys both the surface and the base when it freezes. There are different depths of base structure for different weights, in the 70s, 80s and 90s when the roads were built wagon weights went from 28 tonnes to 44 tonnes. more weight = more damage.

The answer is very simple Geoff, Since the demize of the proper local councils run by local people who cared for their areas and had set standards for things like road repairs everything has been done on the basis of "as cheep as possible". So we can see from that particular pothole it has had a number of attempts to fill it in! None of them complying to road construction standards! More than likely were done in the wet or on a frosty day with no binding material to make sure the new stuck to the old! the first hot day with heavy traffic and it all starts to break up all over again!

@@DW-dd4iw unfortunately no. Road structure is made up of a number of different layers, the top 50mm is the wearing course, this is supposed to be planed off and remade. We have those kind of potholes every "winter" here in Perth Australia when there is excessive rain for a longer period of time. They have special council teams that fill them but it can indeed be annoying. A new thing here since last year is that we now have a lot of curb stones that are breaking and lying next to the road in corners. I think it has to do with EV's , large 4X4's and continuous public works (big sand trucks destroying the roads ). Our land rates (property tax) goes up significantly but the roads deteriorate. Perhaps this is a global phenomenon now?

The council did highlight them with paint after 18 months, re-highlighted them all again 2 years later and then another 1 year later, finally put down all new top layer tarmac to cover 90% of the nasties! I think they kindly left the potholes at either end just to deter drivers from driving through, but if you did, you'd also pay for it driving out of town! Must be so difficult to include the last 20 metres either end of the half mile of new tarmac planning!

When I was more involved with this sort of thing, I was informed of criteria which the council uses before it is deemed a "pothole". If it's less than that, they ignore it. I've just reported damage to Coventry ring road, which nearly had me off my bike. It may not meet their criteria but it is deep enough, long enough and because it is lots of potholes joined together, the bike shook its head like a dog playing "rag it". Coventry council reporting form deems it as an emergency. Hopefully it will be repaired before Motofest in 3 weeks.

The paint markers show that the council knows the problem is there. The fact that the paint is worn and weathered shows they have known for a long time. The "repairs" are carried out carried out by contractors who are usually on very friendly terms with local councillors. They charge a lot of money for the job, but carry out the work cheaply and to a poor standard. The "repair" then quickly fails creating a bigger hole than the one that was originally there. This allows the contractor to make big profits by carrying out the same "repair" multiple times, charging for each "repair" separately, and putting some of those profits into a brown envelope that gets quietly passed to the councillors. If we didn't have this corruption councils would insist on a better standard of work, and the roads would actually get fixed. If the contractor repairs a pothole and it re-appears in under a year, then it hasn't been repaired, so they shouldn't get paid.
