Speaking as the buyer of this watch (from Christies) - Adam is a professional and he was working with another professional. Adam does not owe a duty of care to the watch dealer. It’s not the same as buying from a little old lady or a naive person, to whom we have to be kind. These soleil dials are rare, perhaps 20 known. This one is the best I have ever seen and as Adam said, there was no market then. Thank you for sharing the story. I always wondered where it came from!

Great Story. After listening to your story, I swear I stumbled upon the same store in the center of Rome in 2014. I noticed the shop walking down the street as he had some JPM straps in the window. I went in and the owner didn't speak English, but he spoke some French so we conversed in my broken French. He brought out some cool watches from the safe including a really nice 1016. I really wanted that 1016 and when I tried to find the store again, I couldn't find it. Happen to recall the name of the store?

Unbelivable story,as Italians are probably one of the most knowledgable nations in the Europe for watches…Probably you did catch a good moment after watch stayed in the shop for long, or the market fluctation was at that moment low.

At the time, there really was no market for this watch and very little education. I paid above market for a normal Ed White (at the time) for the watch, thinking this should be worth more but not knowing for sure. I think Christie’s only put an estimate of $15-30,000 if I recall correctly. None of us knew what it was worth, it set a record.

Not quite, don’t forget to subtract 30% in auction fees, and split the profit in half (with the person who helped us buy it with cash available), the overall return if memory serves was 200% (100% per person). Still a great payday when you consider that gross margins average out generally at 10% or less in this line of work!

Why? He got several grand more than he initially wanted on a watch with an ambiguous value. We got extremely lucky in auction, even after you reduce the 30% fees and waiting around 2 years to sell it.

Very good example of how the Grey Market Watch Dealers Are Not honest businessmen. Taking advantage of someone who doesn’t know what he really has and not giving him Fair Market Value for a Gem of a watch. Nice story of dishonesty. .Money is Not everything in life. Shame on you!

This was 10 years ago - none of these had sold and no one knew the fair market value of this watch. Hence why we put in auction to determine the value. Certainly we knew it was worth more than we were paying, or at least we hoped. Not many go into business with the intent of not making money of course.
