I feel very sorry for the people that lack the intellectual curiosity to watch this video. If you actually stay around there’s some pretty rare vintage pieces in this. I really enjoyed it! Comparing YSL’s use of colour to Day-Date Stella dials is actually a great comparison. Men like to think they’re “watch collectors” and not fashion/jewellery enthusiasts. Except that’s exactly what we are. Try and broaden your horizons! I love how one of the interviewees specifically calls out people people who are into watches and not clothes. The same people, presumably who are turning their nose up at this 😂

Fun to see a bit of a detailed exploration into the modern relationship between fashion and watch-collecting. They aren't as separate or mutually exclusive as they are sometimes treated. (For one thing, among nerds of each I think there is often a shared disdain (snobbish if you like) for certain mid-tier ubiquities that are often considered 'fashion'/'basic', whether it's an Armani watch or a Michael Kors handbag.) Here for more content like this! I love vintage clothing and finding strange, unique things, and that's carried through into my taste in watches - the choice of watch each day is super personal but so is the silhouette, the choice of coat, shoes etc - all very specific style choices. I always wondered why Rolex leaves me completely cold and this video kinda highlights it - for me it's all just a bit monolithic and recognisable, like a Chanel quilted bag or a Birkin... kind of a status access code rather than something unusual and special. (Personal view - I know lots of Rolex people love them like a firstborn.) As with fragrances or clothing, I prefer something that could prompt 'ooh, what is that?' rather than 'oh, you have that, well done'.

I really enjoyed seeing this perspective. It is very different than how I and those in my circles approach watches. As a prior military and action guy watches are tool that tell a story and mark moments. They link to history and heritage in military history so branching out from that worldview was really enlightening. That is one of the many positive attributes of watch collecting. They speak to so many different people and tell so many different stories. We each have those makers and designs that speak to us for different reasons which sparks conversation and bring people together. I can’t count how many times I have sparked up conversations with strangers over watches

I loved, loved, loved this episode. I have a huge interest in fashion history and it never even occured to me to link Saint Laurent to Genta. The way their design codes have been the inspiration for other designers makes total sense. And I really enjoyed seeing the range of vintage watches on display, as well as seeing Gauthier dedicate a watch inscribed with his friend's baby's name. It was a lovely gesture and one that really speaks to the timelessness of watch collecting. I also agree that even if one has no interest in fashion, one can at least admire design and craftsmanship and a watch works on multiple fronts in that regard. It makes a statement about taste and personal style, whether intentional or not. I can't wait to catch the next episode especially because I love jewelry watches. Well done, Malaika and Hodinkee team. 👍🏻

That was very interesting! Two things: watches evolve at a glacial pace compared to fashion because they last much longer and are not replaced every season (apart from Swatch), and while there may be watches that are solely aimed at the female customer, a small watch is not necessarily a “woman’s watch”. The Cartier Tank and Reverso Classique are meant to be elegant, that’s why they are small. Vintage Rolex watches are small(er) too, compared to today’s sizes. Nothing wrong with that. Buy what you like.

Good content so far. I do love urban Paris (11th arr) and as a Londoner I’m lucky it is an hour and a bit away on the train. People are going to cry about fashion segments, but guess what some people do not care about vintage Porsche or Patel’s and avoid those subjects too. So it’s about balance of topics, if you do not like it then do not watch. Only couple of critiques on this section that I hope improves: Paris and Parisian fashion is very black. It’s almost impossible to hit Paris without coming across POC fashion groups, so I do hope there is some talk/examples of that. Additionally I’d also say watches can be fashion for some, but “tools” for others, and would definitely not say “watches are all about fashion”. But I do understand fashion is part of every watch owners collection as they want a watch to look a certain way. Or even the styling of watches with new straps to match the GMT hand for example. Anyway, good video Maliaka 🎉

Interesting. I like watches and either have or could wear many of the “normal” watches in the video. I know a bit about clothing but I’m deeply unfashionable and could never carry off any of the pieces worn by the guys in the video. I wonder whether those interviewed would think less of me because I’m primarily interested in the watch? Surely that’s no different to a woman investing heavily in a Chanel/Dior/YSL dress and accompanying accessories apart from a watch?

I enjoyed this episode, but hopefully, there will be more branching out. Watches worn as self expression is not always a Rolex, JLC, Cartier, etc... I understand the history of certain watch brands and their ties to fashion. But there is a huge community of watch wearers that display unique choices of other brands like Swatch, Seiko, or even Fossil. Everyday street fashion watch wearers can show a different side of watch collecting. Whether it's vintage watches or non-luxury plastic watches, I feel those choices should be acknowledged and talked about as well.

Advice to tattoo-prone guys who love watches - keep those tats at least six inches away from your watch. A watch should be on a plain background, without competition from ink. A good watch is always going to trump another tattoo. Also, please move keep your Rolex in the garage with your 3-series BMW. There are so many better designs and ways to be original.

It's about time the watch media has acknowledged that watches are a style choice. I love watches because I take an interest in clothing and style not despite it. To me and lots of others a watch complements an outfit is does not make one. The person in a well thought out look, topped off the right watch for it will look a million times better than the guy in the tatty polo and shorts but wearing a holy trinity 300k limited edition whatever. I thought this was obvious.
