The challenge of more firefighting aircraft is cost of maintenance. Everybody wants the aircraft when there's a fire, but no one wants to pay for the aircraft when there isn't a fire. Because of such limited budgets, it's impossible to maintain a larger fleet.

The cost of the fires, may change that calculus. I'm hearing conservatives recommend that LA completely scourge it's wilderness of all plant life which sounds more expensive and more likely to cause landslides then just getting some more DC-10s retrofitted.

@@FoundAndExplained If the Canadair came also was made in an amphibious only version, the cost of maintenance would be lowered & the water capacity would be increased. This would work for certain cities where bodies of water would be available for a home base, but some aircraft with landing will still be needed... As for large jetliner based firefighting aircraft, good enough used aircraft needs to be purchased for conversion & for parts. As converting jetliners for "cargo use only" significantly lowers the maintenance costs. When they do reach the point of needing a major rebuild, they can be parted out & the firefighting gear transferred to a lower flight hours aircraft... Essentially this cost reduction is by using bangers for firefighting instead of aircraft that will be taken care of to ensure the longest possible service life. As one pass that resulted in debris entering the engines & damaging certain instruments can either cost a lot of money to fix or simply replacing it with another five million dollar banger from the airlines...

Up here in Canada the CL-215s and 415s are common-enough sights for me since I live near an airport. I especially like the older 215 for one fact alone; the sound. It uses the old school radial engines, and it sounds like a WW2 bomber when it flies overhead. I still stop whatever I'm doing when outside just to see and hear these tireless flying fire engines. Cheers!
@davidhollenshead4892

The 215's are being updated to 415's as time allows as radial engines are a maintenance time hog and it is becoming harder to get replacement engines. The reason that the Dehavolon single engine radial is now getting new radial engines from Poland as the original replacements are NLA. This is also one of the reasons that DC3's are being upgraded to Turboprop engines, even though it requires lengthening the fuselage...

@@davidhollenshead4892Small correction: CL-215s are being upgraded to the CL-215T standard. The 415 and 215 are different airframes entirely, but adding a turboprop hugely increases the performance of the 215. Though older airframes are still using the radials for training purposes.

@FoundAndExplained Thank you for another great video! 215s, 215Ts and 415s have saved my bacon many times as a helitac firefighter. Most everything you mentioned was spot on, but I have a couple corrections for you. There are two vertical water tanks immediately in front of the main landing gear. You can see a vent port just under the wing on each side where water will spill out when they are full. They are placed directly under the centre of lift to maintain stability rather than in the belly near the nose where the aircraft would become nose heavy and unstable. The scoops are also surprisingly small. The 415MP has a search radar, however this is meant for maritime patrol. Radar would not be very helpful in finding hotspots for firefighting. Thanks for putting up with my pedantry and for shining a light on these beauties!

@davidhollenshead4892 Absolutely! They are very commonly used in helping to extinguish a fire once it's contained and controlled. I've worked with high accuracy heli mounted FLIRs, but not on a scooper. It's not common as the cost per flight hour on a 415 is much greater than a light helicopter.

Another advantage of the CL-215/415, ground-based tankers like the DC-10 need to land after every drop to take on more water or retardant, whereas the super scooper can make multiple drops if a water source is available until they need to be refueled.

As an LA resident who loves aviation, I have personally called CalFire and our forest service thanking them for their remarkable flying skills, as I carefully watched Grumman S-2T trackers, skycranes, the CL 415, and even massive C130s putting out these fires, along with the diligent fire hawks that have been Protecting the homes in northern LA where I live. The disinformation I have seen is frankly disappointing. People who only care about LA to point fingers at it, and criticize now suddenly are acting like experts. From a political science and history scholar, I would like to inform them that LA has a long history of red lining and poor zoning laws that build right up into the chaparral , which is literally evolved to be flammable. It is lobbyists and rich land owners that lobby to have this risky, construction, and places like Malibu will burn every 10 years, and the lobbyist count on us forgetting. This is not an LA problem, this is not a leadership problem, this is about private interest, and the fact that they do not care about us. Thank you for what you do, F&E, and for your empathy also having struggled with fires. Can we get a video on the F-89 Scorpion? It’s a fav of mine.

NOTE: A CL-515 variant has entered production... but is not getting enough order to make the endeavour profitable. It seems like the governments of some countries do not really care if they are ill equipped to put out major fires. BTW, that is not anywhere close to how you pronounce Bombardier. Did you know you can enter a word in Google Translate, click the little speaker button and it is going to speak the word out loud for you? That would clearly come VEY handy for you!😉

Thanks for sharing our perspective on fires Mate 👍 The world can look to us for examples on how to try to prepare for bushfires. Sometimes, there’s no fighting them. They are literally firestorms that can’t be believed, but they’re real. L.A. experienced what country towns have experienced. Sydney came close to that over a decade ago. It got lucky.

Here in Greece (as in most Mediterranian countries), CL-213 & CL-415 are a common sight every summer, since they are the backbone of aerial firefighting, being suitable for our mountainous terrain, capable of discharge their water even inside ravins or on steep cliffs. Their pilots are real heros, sometimes losing their lifes (as mentioned in the video), as they operate on the edge of aircraft's limits. Furthermore, piloting in an old CL-215 during a forest fire is a real hell, since they do not have airconditioning, with temperatures inside the cockpit exceeding 50oC! There are many much bigger firefighting planes (the russian Beriev being the most popular), but they are most suitable for open plains or valleys, which require large quantities of water. Firefighting planes, in general, are NOT used in inhabited areas, as the water drop can injure or even kill people on the ground - their role is to contain the fire around towns or cities, leaving firefighting inside them to the ground forces.

Every design aspect of the aircraft just seems so perfectly designed for Canada. Lakes are everywhere in Canada, like zoom in on google maps and see that it is literally like 30% lakes. Canada does not have much infrastructure near much of its wilderness, so the ability to refill very quickly at any body of water is immensely useful. Planes can also be stationed on lakes throughout fire season, meaning you don't have to build permanent runways out in the wilderness for them, instead you could station and refuel one at a dock on a lake, far from much of civilization, but hooked up to a road where you could bring in a fuel truck when needed.

At the time, Sweden was testing and evaluating it, with discussions about potentially buying it. Watching it work during the fire made me wish Sweden had purchased these. Over the decades, it could have made such a difference in fighting fires like that one. sweden just recently a few years back bouth sadly not these but a diffrent smaller air craft a few AT-802 Fire boss

what makes the small aircraft better then the larger aircraft is that it will drop 5 to 6 times more often, or more then a larger DC-10 for example. Bigger loads doesn't mean it is better, as dropping more often can and will be more effective to fighting fires, and the smaller aircraft such as the CL-415 are much cheaper to maintain then an aging DC-10, and part of that reason is the CL-415 and 215 and even the newer 515's are built cheaply as possible without sacrificing quality. I do think every country should have multiple of these aircraft, 2 or more depending on the size of the country because they are extremely useful tools, even for water rescue operations since they can land in the water, not just skim the surface to collect water. Hell they would make really good coast guard aircraft for dropping supplies to sailors in the water, even landing near them and picking them up out of the water then taking off, they have the space for a lot of people inside and rescue equipment.
@Kiljaedenas
@Kiljaedenas 6 күн бұрын
Another key thing of bigger vs smaller aircraft, the bigger tankers are no where near as nimble as a CL-415 and have to do their drops from a much higher altitude, so they can have accuracy problems. The CL-415s and the absolute badasses flying them have downright tactical precision, and the plane is capable of weaving into position around terrain to hit the most vital spots of the fire.

Australia has over 500 firefighting aircraft of many types. Lots of rotary aircraft and good old 3,000L Airtractors that can use smaller bodies of water to scoop from, which is handy for us. A couple based near where I am, and lovely to see them fly over when fires are about. Right up to the modern 10,000L Bombardier Q400AT. Many different types of aircraft, but sadly I don't believe we have any of this beauty. Not sure we particularly need this one though, as I'd expect one of the 150+ operators would have bought them if needed. Wouldn't go astray having some, but each type has a different role and ability. Anyway, nice video just thought I'd point out that it's not like we don't already have a large fleet of aerial firefighting aircraft.

My dad works on 10 Tanker. I think he was saying the 747 was unable to pass the certification tests that would certify it with the USFS to fight fires. The tests involve a series of buckets along a runway that all have to be filled to a certain amount during a drop pass and for whatever reason the aircraft just couldn't pass the test.

It would be interesting to compare how much water per hour or per day can the CL-415 deliver compared to those much larger like DC-10 or 747. They have to return to an airport big enough to take them, land, taxi to a stand, get refilled by pumps, taxi again and take off and return to the fire. The CL-415 in the meantime drops smaller loads but depending on the distance to the nearest long enough water surface it can repeat that a hundred times a day. So it would be interesting to calculate how near the this water surface has to be to the fire in order for the CL-415 to actually drop more water per day than the DC-10. I bet it would win not just in the current California fires with sea next to them but in a lot of other cases too. And on price per liter dropped it is probably winning almost all the time given it is a medium sized turboprop and and not a large jet airliner. The cost per flight hour is probably very different.

This is true. Although the load of water the tankers drop is large for one go, it can't match the total volume of continuous pumping or the accuracy of a nozzle. Tankers are great for calming flame fronts, but they don't contain or control a wildfire

Depends on the terrain. The 415 is the most effective method, along with bucket helos, when the terrain is very steep. Also when you have a ready source of water and trying to put a stop quick near a structure that ground crews can't access in time or safely. When conditions are calm and the fire is slow moving, ground crews are better.

@Aschraffff 7 күн бұрын
CL-415s are more efficient than a huge 747. You need to get as close as possible to the fire, and be able to reload and rotate quickly. The 747 or any jet, would be just light rain, and kinda inefficient.

The water tanks are not under screw spaces. Only directly under the wings, vertically arranged upright. I guess the makers of this video didn't bother to do much research.

The only modern aircraft that can do it better than the CL-415 is the US-2, the US-2 is a 4 engine seaplane that can land and take off more than 100 meters shorter then the CL-415 and hold up to 15 tons of water along with the US-2 is faster but no governments have invested in this aircraft as a water bomber despite the better all-round performance

@@themalhotras1597 it costs 3 times the amount of a CL-415 but also holds 3 times as much water so there is no real big price distances, look at the passenger jet conversions they require more maintenance than the US-2 but yet are still used, weird

Each aircraft serves a different role in aerial firefighting. While big planes with big loads can drop lots of water or retardant, they can't get very close to the ground or into valleys. The higher you drop the wider the dispersal, the lower the effectiveness. Big passenger jet conversions also have to operate further from the very turbulent air close to a fire. The 747 and DC10 are most often used to drop retardant lines ahead or on the flanks of a fire to try to limit spread. They also have to return to an airfield to reload. Scoopers like the 415 and Fireboss do more direct attack to suppress fire intensity and growth

With the growing number of wildfires everywhere in the world, I have been wondering if Airbus could have used one of their now decommissioned A380, as there are now dozens of them out of use, and rebuilt them as giant water bombers so to speak. With how big they are, they probably could store a lot more water all at once and drop that over a wildfire, as well as having a giant range and great speed, to help out quickly wherever needed. Though I guess with how low their engines are hanging you cannot really scoop up any water with these flying giants. Maybe they could do it with very long extendable scoops?
@davidhollenshead4892
@davidhollenshead4892 11 күн бұрын
You simply don't want to fly a large aircraft close to the terrain as they will have trouble climbing after they scoop. Also the jet engines are not designed for the water they will ingest while scooping as jetliners have their engines close to the ground...

In spite of how great this plane is, Bombardier has gone waaaay down in quality. They make trains that are always years late and grossly over-budget. And often times they have to be retro-fitted on site because the wheels are too wide for the tracks or something stupid like that. They're basically Canada's Boeing.

As a Californian who lives in Oregon now, thank you for that last statement. Our fire seasons piggyback each other for Cali and Oregon so we send strike teams back and forth. It is disheartening to see the misinformation being spread online about the management and pretty much anything else in the way the LA fires (and Cali fires in general) are being handled. That being said, I have the utmost respect for all of the firefighting crews and it's amazing what they do day-in and day-out. Also, that 747 comparison was absolutely nuts lol.

@@rexmcstiller4675 That’s only partly true. Germany doesn’t have any firefighting planes, but has helibuckets for firefighting via helicopters, e.g. the Federal Police Bundespolizei has trained their crews on waterdropping via helibucket.
