Have to say, Boeing made the right call to develop 777 and later 787 while cancelling 747-500 600 and 700... Which would be quite interesting to see those featured next on Found And Explained. I hope they can recover with recent blunders...

Well Boeing had originally looked at a double deck design based on the 767 for the 777 design, but after modeling evacuation times, aircraft fitment at airport terminals, weight airport aprons were designed to support, etc. They decided that much larger aircraft were self defeating. The short career of the A-380 has proving this.

Excellent points here. Lockheed were the leaders in exotic composite materials at that time (Stealth Fighter, etc), so looking back, yes, they could have instead looked at a small/middle-sized jet with ultra-long range, and experimented with that idea instead. (Hindsight 20-20 etc.)

When we thought Lockheed was already crazy with the CL-1201, they propose this. I wish Lockheed had entered the civilian aircraft more. It was. Sadly, it competed for airline sales against the 747 and DC-10. Rolls-Royce suffered a lot of problems making reliable composite turbofan blades for the L-1011's engines, and by the time Lockheed could guarantee delivery of TriStars, airlines had already placed many orders for Lockheed's competitors. It was another great, well-designed aircraft that never sold enough units to pay for what they cost to be developed.

I've been eagerly awaiting this episode since you started teasing pictures. Completely impractical for sure, but such a beautiful design.

Impressive plane. But indeed, the demand for big airplanes was once realistic, but changed over the last 10 years. The A380 is one example of that changed demand. Nice sims. Can someone make this plane for X-plane or FS?

I cannot wait to take an A380 flight again. I took one and 2017 it was the best flight ever been on. And I was on the top floor also. This type of plane is purely magical.
