Dear Sir I am a mechanical engineer in the USA and have done a lot of machine design work. I am now designing my retirement home in Florida and I ran across your video. This video is absolutely fantastic ! I really appreciate the practical reasoning you use to explain and make very clear how to calculate the forces. Your students are indeed lucky to have you ! Thank you so much and please continue to make such videos.

Romanian foundation design code for isolated footings is simple: To assume a linear distribution of the pressures, you need to ensure proper rigidity of the pad footing. This can be provided by respecting some prescribed ratios between H/D>=0.3 (Height of pad, D- bigger footing length). If not provided, you have to check one-way and two-way shear. Otherwise, it is just a recommendation.

Every other thing is well satisfied in yhe the section, just this anchorage length 40xd issue

Thank you for your nice words. You will never have such thing. You will need bigger bar diameters in bigger footings and therefore you will have more distance for the development length.

@Original_oven3 жыл бұрын
Great explanation as usual! but how do you find the effective depth? do you simply assume the number and calculate based on that? or is there a specific method to be used?
@DJayDNA2 жыл бұрын
If you're referring to "d" then I believe it's the distance from the top of the foundation to the center of the bottom reinforcement, if I'm not mistaken.
@DJayDNA2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for this Dr El-Gamal. One question regarding shear stress; if it exceeds the concrete shear capacity, you mentioned that the solution is increase the height (H) of the foundation. Isn't another possible solution to use shear reinforcement?

Hi, thank you very much for this nice video. I have a small question, Why do we take SLS loadings (and not ULS) to calculate footing size? Thanks.
@MrElgamal772 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your interest. The footing area depends on the allowable bearing strength which is a SLS not an ULS. Therefore we use the service load not the ultimate.
