Excellent job. I rescued a beautiful grey Holsteiner who had foundered badly. He had belonged to a young woman who was involved in competition jumping. Her father imported him from Germany and he was an amazing horse. He was 17.1 hands and had a very gentle temperament. For whatever reason she lost interest in it all and the poor boy paid for it. By the time I got him he was a walking skeleton with terrible arthritis in his front knee joints and had foundered as I said. It took a lot of work but finally he recovered but only to a point. He was 18 years old when I got him but 8 years later during a bitterly cold winter he developed so much stiffness and pain in his front legs that nothing we did helped. I ended up having the vet put him to sleep. That was quite a few years ago now and I still miss that gentle giant. He had so much personality and was so gentle but it was the right thing to do.

Nice job young man! I'm sure that horse is more comfortable taking the pressure off of that rotated coffin bone, founder is probably the most painful thing a horse can go through well and colick!

Very interesting video! None of my horses ever had founder thankfully as I always made sure they had shoes on, or their hooves were filed and in good condition. The old school of thought was that the coffin bone rotated because of swelling of the laminae. I saw a fellow with a different though, believing that the rotation is caused by contraction of the deep flexor tendon. What is the current school of thought? I’m curious if there’s been any new findings on the mechanics of founder.

Great job! Question: I've heard an explanation before but I've forgotten exactly how it works, so what in the mechanics of leaving the heels a bit longer is it that helps a foundered horse? My thought has been that the coffin bone will still be pointing downward and may put pressure on the sole, but is it the increased weight bearing of the frog and the coffin bone kinda being pushed forward against the hoof wall that gives the relief because there isn't as much tugging on the laminae and inner structures at the tip of the coffin bone? Not sure if my reasoning or wording is making sense, but am I kinda correct or could you explain the mechanics and the hows and whys of the method? Thanks!

😍Oh my gosh! I have just seen my Major's doppelganger. Major was that one very special horse every lifelong or longtime rider has been/ is Blessed with. He has been on my mind a lot lately since for the first time in 45 years I am horseless. I think my search for a new horse is going to be a challenge.... Wanted short but stocky, kid broke, or rather old lady broke horse, that has only two gears, low 1, and park. Lol.

I handled a Standardbred stallion by the name of Mystic Park - he had contracted Patomac Fever( East coast thing) and was sent to New Bolton Center - he severely foundered on all 4 feet - they took all 4 hooves off at the coronary band - they put medi boots on him until they regrew - it was amazing what they did for him to be able to be sound again - only problem he had is if you would oil and pack his hooves his hooves would become to soft

Fascinating. I was under the impression that foundering ment the same as lame, however this seems to be a condition that can be corrected. What would cause the hoof to break off in such a way?

Lame (in a horse) simply means limping or abnormal gait. Foundering is a reason for lameness. Other reasons (but not all) for a lame horse: injury, poor nutrition, hormone imbalance, infection, or degenerative disease. Some of these are fixable; others are not. Degenerative diseases can be managed, but inevitably there will come a time when quality of life will have to be taken into account.

That horse looks around at you when you first put the shoe on and it was smoking like mad and his/her eye got real big, like "hey bud, that's my foot you're settin' fire too!" That would be a great still for your wall at home! "Yep folks, that's me at work setting fire to a customers favorite horse." I've been a carpenter for years. And I've asked this question a few times but know one will answer it. Is it possible or could you use a shorter screw instead of a nail? It wouldn't poke out the side. Seems as if it would be as strong or stronger.

What comes in must come out. A hoof is a giant toe and toenail. Think of a screw being screwed into your toenail so it rests on your toe; every time you step it would be uncomfortable. Removal worse. Nails are easy in, easy out and stay in place for the 4-8 weeks they need to be in. The nails don't hurt them and the nails are filed to not cause injury to horse or rider.

The best way to think of the frog is the ball of the foot. It’s there for shock absorption, traction and pushing blood through the hoof and back up the leg (circulation.) The last thing any horse owner or rider likes seeing is frog problems. Remember, the inside of the hoof is the toe and the actual hoof you see is like a toenail. It’s made of the same stuff, keratin, but much harder. It’s not going to split as easily as our human toenails and fingernails do. It’s hard but flexible.

I’m sure people ask this a billion times, but when they forge the shoe are They truly just going by memory and experience for sizing the shoe , do they have to go back and hammer it out a few more time occasionally. How do they always make them so seemingly perfect the first time if they don’t know the dimensions and have a way to measure it?

Hey, farrier here! It's not shown here, but we do actually measure the feet! Many of us carry around small, flexible tape measures to find the circumference, width, etc. of the foot, which we use to figure out how much steel to cut when hand making shoes like the one above. As far as getting the fit of the shoe, we do memorize the foot to some extent, but will go back to the horse to check the shoe on the foot to make sure it's the right shape/size. Hope this helps answer your question!

For the hoof to be healthy blood flow must enter and leave there. Frog pressure is NOT the mechanism by which this happens. Instead it is the expansion and contraction of the heels as weight bearing comes on and goes off. With the rear nails on each side placed behind the center line of the hoof and the bar of the shoe welded at the heel you have effectively stopped the possibility of the hoof expanding and contracting during weight bearing and lifting off. If the coffin bone tips down at the toe from founder, as you showed in the beginning of the video, then why are you not dropping the heels as much as possible. The hoof shown in the video is the high heeled hoof and still is higher than the other hoof even after the job is complete. How does this address the rotation of the coffin bone?
