When the drug maker guy let the tiger out of the cage, it was completely metaphorical for unleashing the tiger from within. He also said earlier “She’s calm, which is good” which I believe means - that Nicholas Cage character was completely relaxed and ready to do what needed to be done at that point. You also mentioned the bathroom scene when he walks back into the house being amazing. I’m not sure how you missed him wearing a tiger shirt. Both the scenes are definitely somehow metaphorically linked.

*Here’s the ending explained:* The chemist and the guy who gave Red the weapons both said the Super LSD gave someone supernatural powers that allowed them to cross dimensions. When Red consumed the LSD it gave him a bit of that power. It was also hinted that if Red went down this genocidal path, he would lose his soul. Losing his soul is what allowed him to finally cross dimensions, and why he was able to burst Jeremiah’s skull. This is why at the ending the setting is in a different world, and why Red has flipped his lid with Mandy crying for him.

There is an after credits scene which shows a selection of drawings Mandy has done, and one of them is of Red smoking a cigarette in the 44 jumper with a roaring tiger above him. This leads me to believe that the whole film is a fantasy novel created by Mandy like the one she reads in the film. The way the title cards appear throughout the film could also be interpreted as different chapter headings. It could also explain the otherworldly landscape at the end as Red drives off. Or she drew it before her death and it's just a mad, drug-fueled, ultra-violent, revenge story. Brilliant film regardless.

One cool thing to note is Red's grief. He hides weapons in his friend's trailer, and hides booze in the bathroom of his own home. In the beginning, someone offers him beer, but he declines. I gathered that Red was likely a violent drunk sometime before (alcoholics tend to hide bottles around the house) and he falls off the wagon due to his grief, using the drugs and violence to cope.
@rockheadonesixtwo4 жыл бұрын
I think you’re right. Throughout the first act, you can tell Red and Mandy do love each other, but there’s something between them. I feel like it was Red’s past alcoholism and Mandy’s past abuse (the starling story, possibly the scar under her eye) that held them together. A history of trauma (self inflicted and not) that they’re both working to recover from. Hell, in my eyes, even the setting is indicative of this. Lots of people with traumatic histories move out to the boonies to get away from their past, which it seems like Red and Mandy did. I wish the first act of this movie has more substance...

I'd also like to point out that everything after Mandys death parallels Dantes Inferno. The guy who gives him the crossbow, and the axe, represents Dante meeting death. And one by one he goes down every ring of Hell, until he reaches the Pit at the bottom, with Satan, or Jeremiah in this case there. Sadly, Mandy sheds a tear for him at the end, as she does for the young fowl at the beginning. By getting revenge like he had, his soul had died.

Mandy is an adapted saga about the nordic crusades. Cage and his wife are vikings/pagans that live peacefuly untill the crusades ("those jesus freaks") arrive. Their king wants Cages wife and hires knights (frightening in appearance like the teutonic knights) to get Mandy. Mandy rejects him and his religion so shes burned (like a witch at the stake). Cage (Red) escapes and goes on a saga of revenge. Then you have the bikers (horsemen), wizards (LSD cooking guy), knights with longswords (the long chainsaw), witch (Jeremiahs older woman), etc. The final scene is the barbarian (Red) facing off the christian king, killing him and burning down his church (literally). The movie ends with the barbarian leaving off into the unknown. So basically like the fantasy sagas Mandy was reading in the store

@jonatantromsa16886 жыл бұрын
For me the whole plot is a biblical metaphor. Each main character has a couple of roles. "Shadow mountains" part is the vision of paradise where Red and Mandy live happily like Adam and Eve until Mandy meets the "Serpent". In the final scene she reads "the serpent's eye" and then she's seen in the woods from Jeremiah perspective, as through the serpent's eye. Red also mentions Saturn (the rebel, Satan) as his favourite planet. "The children of the dawn" is a story of misleadings of religion through the millenia. Here, Mandy becomes a witch or the whore of babylon. She's a freethinker, artist, rebel, she can tell the right from wrong without a religious guidance. Jeremiah (pope, false prophet, God's emissary wicked by wealth and ego) tries to convert her by force, not to God, but himself. When she rejects him, the "children" burn her, just like the church burned the witches who refused to renounce the devil. In that case Red might be seen as Satan (witches lover), but also Jesus (stigmatised hands, pierced side) who spent time talking to sinners, wrongdoers and whores (like the scene at the gig where he was charmed by Mandy). I found that some people connect the number 44 (favourite shirt) with Jesus. Black skulls are obviously the riders of apocalypse, summoned by horn. Jeremiah's disciples wield some true power by using artifacts. The book of Revelations also mentions Jesus reign with iron scepter (axe?) in his hand. There's a meaningful scene when Red's '44' shirt is destroyed, and he equip a vest with Lucifer's sigil on the back. Then he visits The Chemist (God), who's preparing massive amount of acid blotters, as for keeping the humanity in their dreamland. He's allknowing, as he reads Red thoughts and knows what he came for. He's dissapointed how the 'children' could have wronged Red so much, which fits perfectly with the theory that Jesus get so outraged by the sin that he brings revenge on the wicked church on the day of the apocalypse. The Chemist mentions that everything is ok when Lizzie (beast of apocalypse) is calm, but after hearing (reading?) Red's story, he releases her to roam the surface of the earth. He also knows where to find the 'children'. When Red enters the empty church, he finds an old book on the altar that appears as a forgotten relict. Cellar door and long, underground corridors, resembles churches secrets and hidden agenda. When the old woman speaks to Red, he looks the other way, as Jesus is said to do to hipocrites on the day of judgement. Jeremiah starts to pannicly accuse Red for all that happened. Red's devilish voice suggest that Jeremiah sees him as the devil, cause he stays convinced that God is on his side. His final scream is also downpitched which may repreasent the Serpent manifest in the end. Red crushes Jeremiah's head, the same way as the snake is foretold to die in the bible. Red sets the corpses and the church on fire (false prophet is cast to the lake of fire in revelations) and Jesus also said that he'll come, and destroy the temple. In one of the animated visions of Mandy, she stands upon a dead crimson beast. In revelations the whore of Babylon gets burned by the seven-headed Crimson beast (wasn't there 7 people in the cult?). In the end Red rides in the dark alone, with unreal sky in the background, maybe as a symbol of the new world beginnig after the apocalypse.

I feel bad about my rudeness from my previous comment. You are not a tard, the subject is kind of a logical fallacy; whether description is explanation or not. It could be argued either way infinitely so I retract my statement. An explanation of a conclusion requires description of the journey though

I felt a lot of original mad max vibes with this film. So good and the 80's metal visuals and that badass ax plus cage's insane but super justified performance is worth the watch. I gotta see the full movie now. Thanks FoundFlix for another great movie to add to my growing list of movies I need to see :D
@QuackersCo4 жыл бұрын
The way I see the ending is that Cage is finally starting to mourne Mandy and coming to terms with his loss after defeating the cult. We see the moment where Cage decides, nope, she isn't gone, she will be with me forever. Which is why he has an insane smile on his face while the moments before looking dour. For Mandy to be real, everything that she created would also be real. The world seen at the end of the movie is one of the pictures Mandy paints.

FoundFlix, have you considered doing some non-English-language movies? Like Park Chan-wook's Old Boy, or Pretty Village Pretty Flame by Srdjan Dragojevic? I would really be interested in your take on them.
@saveusmilkboy6 жыл бұрын
Hannibal Hyde Dude, original Old Boy one of my all time favs! If you can find Pretty Village (Serbian film from the 1990... but not THAT Serbian Film), I recommend that too. It's a black-comedy / war drama which, IMHO, shows war exactly as what it is - total absurdity.

I loved this movie. It was one of Nicholas Cages best movies to date! This movie had everything in it.. I think that if people love The movie Heavy metal, they would love the small claymation and cartoon episodes. The action is epic!! It's sad that the music director in this passed away. He is brilliant. His direction made this movie what it was!!!

most movies that depict drugs are way off. Often LSD or shroom trips are shown as people hallucinating cartoon-like characters and people flying etc. The LSD visualization in this movie is pretty accurate (Im speaking from...too much...experience). The colors bleeding, the faces melting together, the slowed speech etc is very accurate to a real acid trip.
