This movie reminds me of an "Am I the asshole?" post where this guy who has schizophrenia and his gf got into it because she hid his medication, and she waited until he had a full on panic induced tearful breakdown to say that she hid them as a prank. She then had the audacity to play victim when he yelled at her for doing it, I think it took him like an hr of searching before it got to that point. She kept telling him that she didn't know he couldn't handle a joke. The kicker is, it was the bf who made the "Am I the asshole?" post.

There is a scene of them sitting in front of the dollhouse and quietly talking before the travel to the cabin, they were clearly discussing their plan back then. And Aidan is also shown to pack up some climbing equipment, that how he managed to fake his hanging later on. 2) Grace didn't shoot Richard because she got angry with him for not listening or whatever. She tried to persuade him that he's already dead and was sure nothing would actually happen - you also didn't mention the fact that she tried to shoot herself first, but the gun misfired. By the way, it's so interesting that every character in the family dies or is about to die from a gunshot. I mean, the filmmakers could choose a different form of suicide for Laura, but they chose the gun. It makes all the deaths feel like one long connected tragedy, like it was somehow Grace's inescapable fate to destroy the whole family. 3) I must say, I have some questions to this characters. The dad's decision to leave is stupid on multiple levels. I mean, the trip to the cabin takes 5-6 hours, if the roads are clean. So, his plan was to drive 5-6 hours to the cabin, then, the very next day, 5-6 hours back home, then, in a few days, 5-6 hours back to the cabin, and then, after Christmas, 5-6 more hours back home? I know that people in US have a thing for cars and driving, but isn't that exhausting? And the kids decisions are stupid too. I'm not even talking about the whole gaslighting idea, but why don't they stop the whole thing after Grace becomes physically dangerous, hitting Mia? That's the moment they should've realized they are stuck with a crazy lady, who NEEDS her medication. And why didn't they steal the gun from her even after they had seen it? Also, they are worried that she will freeze to death when she seats outside for too long, and that's what makes them tell her the truth. But why didn't they do it when she decided to walk to a town, wearing no outer clothing but a blanket? She totally could have died at that point. Also, after they realize she's dangerous, why do they hide in the attic that has no locking door? Their room has one, and the basement has this secret area where they hid all the stuff, why not go there? And please don't say they're just kids. According to the obituary, Aidan is 17. He should have known better.

The real villain is the dad. He knew how traumatized and hurt his kids were and also knew his girlfriend was mentally unstable and traumatized. He knew that the kids blamed the girlfriend for their mom taking her own life. We gotta remember theyre kids - that said they aren’t going to understand things as an adult would. That said, neither the kids or Grace were in the right mental state to be left ALONE in a lodge in the middle of nowhere.
@insertname73253 жыл бұрын
Actually, the argument of "they're kids" doesn't hold up since children can learn right from wrong at the age of five and onwards, and can understand concepts such as death, torture, and abuse, and the implications of what they entail. While the father shouldn't have left all three together, it's ultimately the fault of the children for going through with their premeditated attempt at causing their step mother to commit suicide. One of the reasons why we shouldn't underestimate how much children do understand about the seriousness of their actions, is because it does lead to real world nightmares. Such as the Jamie Bulger Killers who at the age of ten, premeditated a kidnapping of a two year old, and then proceeded to sexually torture and finally murder them, only being caught because their attempts at hiding their wrong doings by dumping the body on a train track lead to an investigation. They revealed in later interviews that they fully understood what they did and why they did so, even if one of them was utterly unrepentant of their actions.

It's interesting how, even though the lady killed the kids and the father, she is easily the most likable character. The kids were unbelievably messed up shitlords who thought it'd be funny to take medication away from a woman who literally depends on it, just cause she fell in love with their father. The ex-cult girl literally did nothing wrong in all honesty, it's not her fault that she was raised in a cult, hell, she saw hundreds of dead bodies at a super young age, she was deeply affected by that alone. Why does everyone think the dad was a psychologist? At the beginning of the movie, the kids ask about Grace being apart of their dad’s book. He was a writer and met her while researching cults. Also, I’m pretty positive he didn’t know she was medicated. There is a scene in the lodge where he enters their room while Grace is taking her pills and she hides them behind her back without him noticing. She was never his patient. It's won 3 Saturn Awards. It was also nominated for 1 Golden Globe award and 2 BAFTA awards. It also grossed over $200 million at the box office on a $17 million budget. A remake is already in the works. But yeah, "it hasn't gotten much attention".

In fact, the only videos about The Others that did receive more than 100K views are clips and trailers.

A side note to speculate on is that "Aiden" has roots in Latin, meaning "Firestarter" perhaps a choice by the writer as Aiden is the one who decides to break their new maternal figure into a relapse in personalities. Grace is metaphorically ignited by Aiden, with her use of fire to mutilate herself, burn the doll, and eventually kill the kids father.

I come back to this video and movie from time to time, and i really cant get over just how much the dad is the villain. Obviously the kids instigated Graces break, but he failed as her doctor by making it romantic, and he failed as a father by not getting his kids the care they needed. Bonus points for the sheer idiocy of leaving the 3 together on their first meeting. He didnt even tell his kids to absolutely not touch her meds.

It definitely seems that the kids were sociopaths trying to indirectly kill Grace. I mean, she literally journeyed out into a frozen wasteland where she could freeze to death to get help for them, and instead of revealing that everything was fake and they could call for help, they made a weak attempt to stop her and then continued to gaslight her even worse when she came back. I can understand hating her and blaming her for their mom's death since they're mourning kids, but they knew that she could have died trying to help them and they still decided that she needed to suffer more and ended up paying the ultimate price for their actions.

I have never felt so sorry for a crazy person like Grace, she didn’t deserve it. She was trying her best to be nice and get to know the kids even though it was so tense between them after their mothers death.
