There aren't any "harmless" ghosts/spirits. The POSE as "familiars"...such as ancestors, recreations of horrible murders, etc. The TRUTH is ANY SPIRIT that comes to you is there to either harm you... (at least, SHOWING you what they are) or WORSE... lull you into a false sense of necrophiliec tendency to think that you can "entertain" them and welcome them into your life. The WORSE case scenario, you've opened a door to the spirit realm and won't be able to close it. Not until JUDGEMENT>>>AFTER this life... will you understand that you were duped and what was to appear as HARMLESS was a play for your soul.

Indeed. It is incredibly refreshing to see both sides of the 'Tragic Haunting Paradox' or 'Haunting Predicament' being properly portrayed and in equal measure and having them intersect in a way that is both organic and deeply psychologically compelling, as you fully internalize that these ghosts who could be fully antagonized if that ever were to happen to you were, in fact, individuals (and nearly all young privileged women who were innocent nonetheless, with the exception of Sir Thomas Sharpe's deceased infant child, the child miners, Edith's father Mr. Cushing, implicitly some horses, a puppy and nearly Dr. Alan McMichael, his castrating sister Eunice and nearly the entirety of their family as well as almost the Private Investigator) with hopes, dreams, aspirations who were both robbed of their innocence and youth, as well as of their potential as human beings by being subjected to the tragic victimization which binds them to the very house they had once sought to escape upon having realized that the one person with whom they thought that they could build a beautiful and fulfilling emotional and romantic relationship with, as well as the promise of materializing enriching and adventurous life with had been emotionally manipulating and physically incapacitating them for financial gain for no reason whatsover other than just, well... Pure, unremorseful malice. And the incestuous abuse that Sir. Thomas Sharpe suffered his whole life, does not justify his murderous complicity and criminality, as he had been presented with the choice to leave Allerdale Hall from the moment his life was no longer directly tied to Lucille's when she was institutionalized in Switzerland, as he could have easily confessed to the police, as Lucille had up until that point, done virtually all of the dirty work and not him. Did he somewhat redeem himself in death? Perhaps so... But it does not take away all of the pain, stagnation, and humiliation that the women, children, and even animals suffered at his hands. It is also important to note that we as a collective audience, do not have the opportunity to fully empathize with the tragically deceased women's strife until the prospect of our heroine Edith being fated to die in a similar fashion, becomes a legitimate, fully fleshed out possibility and yes, we do start to feel the same semblance of inescapable entrapment as she very much does in the pre-climactic moments of the film and when the ghosts appear in their crimson spectral manifestation, it is incredibly chilling and lethally terrifying! And you start to feel everything and every single emotional response that Edith had been accumulating up until that moment. Edith herself could have easily ran away in the scene in which she goes to the post office and she would have easily been believed and the ghosts would have understandably let her go... But she chose to stay to help avenge her father and the victims before her who had no voice, even going as far as risking her own life and that of her first love, best friend, and confidant in the process. She was successful in the end, because both parties collaborated and were cooperative toward one another and that is truly a beautiful thing to see on screen, as the prospect of the potential victim helping avenge those who came before him or her, isn't a trope that is explored to its fullest narrative potential in recent horror films.

The armpit stabbing isn’t as random as it seems - you’ve got a pretty major blood vessel running through there, and it’s one of the hardest places to apply a tourniquet or anything like that. The son of one of my dad’s friends went arm-first through a glass door and caught a huge shard in his armpit, cut that artery, and was dead before anyone even realised how serious an injury it was. Beware the armpit, friends.

As kids, Thomas and Lucille were locked up together, but she was older and already showing signs of a personality disorder on top of the abuse they received. She sexually abused Thomas into thinking they’re in love so that he won’t ever leave her, then they murder their mother who found out what they were doing. Later, she convinces him to marry for money and murders his wives (he never technically killed anyone, although he was complicit for sure, because she asks him, “are you finally going to do it this time?” in regards to killing Edith). Enola, the last wife before Edith, knew that Lucille had a child out of wedlock and offers to care for it (we never know if she knew it was Thomas’s child as well) but it dies, which makes Lucille even more unbalanced. In her own psychotic way, Lucille really did love Thomas, but he knew through the haze of abuse and gaslighting that is was wrong, but he couldn’t break free. He did fall in love with Edith, and it was only when he admitted he loved someone else that Lucille killed him. She couldn’t bear the thought of losing him. You credited The Haunting of Hill House as inspiration for Crimson Peak but don’t forget both The Fall of the House of Usher and even Flowers in the Attic!

I also love this movie, but I think why many people don't is because of how it was marketed. I remember it being advertised as a horror and "the scariest movie you'll ever see", and that's not what it is. If they had been more true to what it actually is, they would have gotten an audience that was into this type of movie and enjoyed it. Instead they got a bunch of horror fans expecting lots of ghosts and gore.

Crimson Peak is such a beautiful, tragic movie. There is a line in the movie, where Lucille is telling Thomas to kill Alan, that makes it seem like Lucille was the one doing all of the killing and Thomas just sort of went along with everything she wanted. The image of Lucille's ghost at the end is especially haunting.

If you read the novelization, it has a few flashbacks to the childhood of the siblings and it's pretty clear there that Lucille groomed him into their relationship too. There is a line (i don't know if it's in the movie or unique to the novelization because I saw the film ages ago... 😅) where he says to Edith "I always close my eyes when people make me do things that I don't want to". That's such an important detail to his characterization!

I am so glad you reviewed this movie. I feel like it was treated badly by Hollywood, being mis-advertised, and by audiences which had unrealistic expectations. You are right; the sets, lighting, and scenes were gorgeous. This is probably one of the best, legitimate "ghost story" movies ever made. Not all ghosts are evil poltergeists - ghosts remain to serve a purpose and not all of them are harmful. I loved this movie and thank you for your review.

This movie and Stoker with the same actress are two of my favorites. The way Crimson Peak mixed a time period I adore and a gothic utter creepiness is unforgettable. I've heard that there is an artery under your armpit so it is kinda a good place to stab? Sometimes you never think about it (especially with how common stabs are in movies) but they can really mess you up no matter where you're hit. Inner thigh? That's an artery. Selena Quintanilla Pérez was shot in the right side of her chest and it hit an artery. Yeah that's a gun shot but this is mainly an artery talk. You're always worried about being shot in the left side of the chest because of your heart, but hit any artery and it's gonna be bad.

This is one of my fave movies ever!! A couple facts, Guillermo built this set just for the movie, literally the whole Allerdale Hall was built, and it he said it was his favorite place he had ever made for a movie, cried when the set came down. Also the 2 lead ladies were supposed to play opposite roles, as in the lady who played Lucille *the bad guy*, was actually picked to be Edith originally, but she wanted to play the more challenging role of the tormentor. Cool huh 😎

Armpit stabbings are a frequent thing with Guillermo del Toro, he addressed it once and told a story of falling on a fence when he was a kid and getting stabbed in the pit and how horribly painful and awful it was. So ig he uses that experience in his films because he understands the full horror of it, even if not all the viewers do. RainWelsh also had good points about it with the major blood vessel and bleeding out. A very good place to not only cause a lot of pain but a lot of hassle fixing too.

I was working in a movie theater when this premiered. The amount of people who wanted refunds for this movie was honestly ridiculous. I remember explaining to people it was a gothic love story not a true horror movie. So sad, this movie was beautifully done. Will give HHN props for the maze from this movie but I think it caused confusion since the movie came out after HHN was already in full swing.

I took my children to see this and, as we watch a lot of movies, although we saw the trailers we maintained an open mind. This movie absolutely wasn't what it was advertised as - and I blame the production company for botching the marketing campaign. Honestly, I would never have classified this as a horror movie. That is what we were expecting when we went into the movie. While it wasn't a horror movie, so we were disappointed on that front, it was a beautifully shot, tragic and Gothic love story, and also... not the ghost story we wanted, but the Gothic ghost story we needed (lol). We watch enough movies that we can appreciate a movie for what it is, even if it turns out not to be what it was advertised as. And I am a HUGE fan of Del Toro's work, so that helps.

That is why people need to do more research and not depend on the trailers alone. I love Gothic romance stories. Just like the film Only Lovers Left Alive was classified as Gothic romance with the two vampires (also starring TH) Wish we had another one coming out again. I'd go and see it. It’s not scares that make you scream and wail but the quiet fears, the horror of the mind, fear of loneliness, of betrayal, of insanity. Probably comes from people hearing of how bad TB and Victorian mental institutions were at the time.

This is my all time favorite movie. From the craftsmanship of the production design to the soundtrack and the costume design and performances, this film is such a masterpiece and I'm so happy it's finally starting to get the recognition it deserves. It makes me so happy that you covered it, thank you! One cool detail about the ghosts: their colors also correspond to their motivations that you mentioned. Red ghosts are victims of violent acts, black ghosts are tied to a specific place (fueled by loss or love) and white ghosts were able to let go of those things before death and are able to fade away.

Characters seem to be made of iron. Edith is poisoned, falls at least fifteen feet, breaks a wooden railing WITH HER BACK, and can still fight Lucille in the middle of a blizzard. The doctor gets stabbed in the armpit and upper abdomen, where major arteries run, and rather than bleed out in thirty seconds, survives the movie. Even though the injuries do eventually kill him, Thomas still survives getting stabbed in the face. Lucille keeps fighting after getting stabbed in the shoulder, which should have disabled that arm by damaging the muscles that raise it.

Guillermo del Toro's a horror film master(he also had 2 of the most iconic actors "Doug Jones and Javier Botet" who are also masters when a film calls for tall, lanky, terrifying nightmarish creatures/spectres) and I loved Crimson Peak!!! I believe Jessica Chastain is one of my favorite actresses and deserves every award she has because of how she's like a chameleon with every role she takes? I saw her for the first time in "The Help" and adored her right away, because her character "Celia" understood how Octavia Spencer's character "Minny" felt, with being looked down upon and treated differently? I loved when Minny told Celia that she's not supposed to eat with her but Celia was like "In my house, nobody is better than anybody?" I know it's going off-topic but Jessica's ability to go from the sweet naive "Celia" to the incestuous, cold-hearted, conniving, murderess, "Lady Lucille Sharpe" is a master-actress, IMO. The first time I watched CP and found out it was Lady Lucille who slammed the daddy's head onto the bathroom sink, and broke the sink with his face, I was like "Dang Jess!" LOL. I don't have a favorite because I love all GDT's films for different reasons?

Personally outta the creepy ghosts that were in the movie, lady Lucille gave me chills at the end her playing the piano and you see her dark figure there. It gave me chills and thought how creepy and dark that was. Well at least I thought so. She deserves that for her punishment throughout the movie. I liked the movie overall. The house is a character itself. It "speaks" in it's tapping and groaning. Its teeth and nails are part of its architecture. It breathes as snow and leaves (with no trees to be found) swirl in it's main entrance. The ghosts are color coded as to what they represent.

This is one of my all time favorite movies! The story itself is so beautifully told and the set is one of the mostly breathtaking things I think I’ve ever seen on film! And because of how the film flows the moments of horror really have a punch. I will always be sad about how poorly the film was marketed. It’s hard to market films when the don’t fit the mold and this film certainly has that problem. I remember it was shown to be more horror when it should have been marketed how Edith talked about her story aka has ghost but not an outright ghost story. I’m just glad now more people are able to finally see it for what it is a gothic romance with some horror thrown in.

Actually the spirits weren’t just their mom, but also the previous wives Thomas had taken, such as the ghost missing the finger, (the mom still had her face intact) and the ghost crawling on the floor, (Enola, without the wheelchair)

I remember seeing this in cinemas with my best friend when it was released and just constantly expecting a supernatural twist - like the Sharpes being immortal or really old but stealing the youth from various brides - and it wasn't that. Completely agree that it was mismarketed which was a pity because I enjoyed the film and the visuals and costumes were incredible

I have a perspective that I like because I think this movie also represents well what she would experience hallucinating while being poisoned. Because of her recollection of her childhood ghost is being told from after her poisoning, there is a very interesting phenomenon about memory that the more times it is accessed the more it is changed that has room to be explored here. Due to her strong emotional state, her poisoning to near death, it is very possible her ghost experience would have been dramatically different originally, but the more she thought about it the more she got sick, the more extraneous and exaggerated details got added, thus the ghosts were all hallucinations. He did Say the ghosts were real, but it 8s interesting how accurately he portrays a scenario in which this exact kind of memory modification can happen. I like your explanation better.

I thought this was ok. I was kinda dozing off towards the end though, however the scissor vs knife fight woke me up again. I also thought the way the mother was killed was pretty gruesome.

I read somewhere that the color of ghosts reflect what they are: red ghosts who died violently, black ghosts are vengeful or Idk (her mother's ghost is black) and white are at peace and were able to pass over to the next life quickly.

I literally remember seeing all the trailers for this in theatres as well as all the marketing. It should have been sold the same way as "laberinto del fauno". A dark, adult Disney fairytale. Such a missed opportunity.

I remember there was a guy in highschool I was unsure of if I liked him or not. I had never been in any relationship at that point and had 0 experience. Anyways I took him to this movie cause I thought it was a horror/ghost flick. It was so awkward when it turned out to be a sort of romance. It was not the vibe I wanted to set. I wanted something very platonic.

The armpit stabbing is something found in a bunch of del torro movies because of something that occurred when he was younger, where, I think he saw a friend get injured like that and just thought it had to be the most painful thing, so, he includes it in a bunch of his movies. It's in an interview somewhere I'm just too lazy to find it.

One of my favorite Del Toro films. The visuals are always impressive, our three leads are compelling especially Jessica Chastian as the wicked Lucille & a good twist on the Gothic ghost story. And man the third act is so brutal, but what we want would want from a Del Toro horror film
