At that time, his English pretty much extended to mostly "hello" and "thank you very much". After that first year on The Singer, he started studying English and Chinese. Even though he still has trouble with the pronunciation of some words, he has come a long way and is able to do full interviews in English now (and continues to study more)

Yes! He always had to have a translator and the MTV interview was the first one he ever gave in English and was pretty basic but the interview he gave to Serbian radio was much more comprehensive and less halting. He's doing so much more in English now, I still hope he never loses that beautiful accent though.

I wouldn't say his English was bad, just not perfect and he does make a number of grammatical errors. As for Chinese, I don't think anyone's aware of actually how much he speaks because he constantly says his Chinese is bad, telling himself to shut up in Chinese on Singer was the funniest thing I've heard in a long time 🤣

I am an English native speaker and I respect Dimash’s talent more than I care for any mispronunciation that may occur. His accent is adorable and I don’t worry about it at all! (I’m certain that if I were to attempt Kazakh, I would butcher the pronunciation more than any foibles Dimash may have in English!). Cheers from Canada.🇨🇦

I must come to his defense about the English. This was 7 years ago, and he was just beginning to learn English. He was 23 and now at 30 with much more interchange and work with English speakers. His English is quite fluent. On this 2017 show he sang in French, Italian, Russian, Mandarin, English, and of course Kazakh. I know it's your job to analyze, critique, and comment, but I believe your priority should be the vocal technique and performance.🎶❤️

I get your point but understanding the words is another part of conveying emotions and it has a similar priority to the melody that conveys emotions. Yes, he speaks alot of languages and that in itself is remarkable. But still it´s completely fine for a vocal coach (or pretty much anyone) to criticize "bad" pronunciation. And yes he has very much improved from his first performances but it still needs alot of work to understand a big amount of words when he sings. And i don´t want to read the subtitles each time, i want to watch and listen and enjoy the performance without missing out on either the music or the lyrics. I hope you understand what I mean. No hate, bc I really like Dimash, but it´s an objectively valid point and also maybe for her a subjective opinion (which is even more valid bc its her free opinion to have). :)

@RedCnMn thats why lyrics and transcriptions exist. My understanding of German, Italian, French, and Spanish is very poor, but I can still appreciate, enjoy, and comprehend music in these languages (and others) because I can just have the lyrics next to the performance (if they're not already available as subtitles). Dimash has performed songs in 15 or more languages, so I tend to cut the man some slack when it comes to pronunciation.

Most of the newer reactors to Dimash, don't know enough about him (or care to), to understand how long ago these were performed, and how much he has improved in the last 7 years.

Thank you Freya. It's nice to hear your breakdowns like this. I would like to suggest some more Dimash. About two weeks ago, Dimash did a duet in this years I Am Singer Show in China, the same show you just watched for this video from 2017. He has gone back almost every year since then as a guest performer. This year he was commissioned to do the duet with Chante Moore, an outstanding R & B singer from the USA. It's fire! You'd have lots to talk about with both these well matched pro's. Then, going back a little, you should listen to STRANGER, Sinful Passion, Love is Like A Dream and Ave Maria. They are all different and all very exciting. I looked at your video reviews of Dimash and it's very short!😄 So, I'm pretty confident you haven't seen any of these. He has around 200 performances on his channel, all of which are in my list of favorites. 🤩 A little note: a lot of reviewers think his contemporary work is recent, but his very first video, made when he was about 16 years old, is a wonderful cute and snappy pop song. The title in English means My Beauty. It's sweet and you should hear his voice even then! He has mixed his Classical and Contemporary music from the start. Well, thank you again! I hope to see another Dimash breakdown from you relatively soon. God bless you!

At this point in his career the only English he knew was hello my name is Dimash. What songs he sang and what English he did learn were taught to him by native Chinese speakers. Sorry to tell you but his intended market isn't English speaking countries so it really doesn't matter to him if he makes a couple of slip ups. As long as he can be understood then he's good. His biggest markets are China and the CIS countries, neither of which have English as their native language. If you're going to be so hung up on accents or pronunciation then I would suggest you try learning a song in Kazakh? The Dears sing to him in Kazakh at every concert and not once has he turned around and said not bad but your Kazakh could be a bit better! Do you know, Dimash is introducing a new song in Kazakh tomorrow, he sang it at a show in China to a Chinese audience who didn't understand a word but there wasn't anyone who wasn't in tears by the end of it.

Another vocal coach who thinks the world revolves around the English language....???!!! Surely you can appreciate the consonants and vowels of other languages. Earth is a planet shared by many peoples and languages that God put in place to serve specific purposes. Dimash is a Kazakh, singing in English to a Chinese Mandarin speaking audience for judges of a competition. He is the only foreigner in this years comp, as he was brought in as a last minute wildcard, not expected to get past the first night, but floored them with SOS on the first night as the first artist to perform. Dimash's expressions now have combinations of sounds from many languages that his Brain has put together at this point, and to most of us Dears/his fans, we absolutely love these idiosynchracies and appreciate, and DO NOT want them to disappear. Art is art, and cannot be contaminated by the rules of order. Singing is best when it is artistic, e.g., opera is only appreciated by relatively few who love following precise laws. Dimash is an artist...not just a singer.

That was in 2017 and back then he couldn't speak any English. I think English is particularly difficult for people like him, who speak such complicated languages as Russian and Kazakh, which have completely different sounds. More difficult than for me as a German, for example. He still has an accent and I secretly hope that he will never lose it, but he has really improved his English a lot in the meantime. I know you can be bothered by that or say that he shouldn't have sung in English, but the other side of the coin is, why not take the risk. It was a competition over many episodes against professional singers and he came in second place as a wildcard and the youngest participant in the show ever. So we turn a blind eye to his English. Many of his fans, the Dears as he affectionately calls them, love his English as Dinglish. In terms of the influence he had on the song, I think it was a huge influence. He never let anyone take the butter off his bread in that regard. He was initially criticised by the makers of the show for being very stubborn when it came to arranging songs. He won't sing anything that doesn't suit him or that hasn't been adapted by him. The covers he sang were always very much his own.

Great detailed analysis Freya. You have always been a great supporter of Dimash and I‘m thankful for that! ❤😊 There is just one thing I would advise you not to do: 😅 Many of us Dears, who come from all over the world and speak multiple languages, don’t take well to people criticizing his accent. 😉 I don’t know how many languages you speak (I myself speak about 4 and understand some more), but have you ever tried to memorize a text in a language you don’t understand? Written with different letters than your own? Also in less than a week…?Well it’s difficult. 😜 And even if you speak a language well, it’s difficult for most people to get rid of the accent. Dimash did not speak any English (except for Thank you and My name is Dimash), when he sang this. And since then his English improved dramatically and keeps on improving. But it hasn’t been that long since he learned it. And he might never get rid of the accent. But who cares? There are many English dialects you wouldn’t understand, even if they are just as correct as yours. So please let’s just enjoy the voice and pretend he’s speaking a dialect you don’t understand. 😉❤

@@EllaSilentDragon they're just really difficult to understand, some words are completely different. My mother was a nightmare about speaking properly so I actually grew up with very little regional accent but my eldest daughter has a very strong local accent and I often smile when I hear her say something colloquial. I know that there are some mouth and tongue positions that Kazakhs really struggle with when speaking English in the same way that I appreciate I will never be able to roll my Rs in Kazakh like Dimash does. @@janieleonard1 Respectfully, first of all, this was from 2017 (!) and Dimash spoke almost no English. This was not poor pronunciation per se -- he did not know English and was singing phonetically. Secondly, I have recently become a fan of BritBox where the shows are created in English-speaking parts of the world -- England, Scotland, New Zealand, and so on. I have to put on the closed caption because English has its own different pronunciations depending upon where you live. At this point, I am just weary of reactors taking something that is 7 years old and commenting on Dimash's pronunciation is sad.
