When I first started practicing with an open throat, my throat got sore because I was not relaxing. But today, I finally relaxed my throat enough that it felt wonderful. One thing I did not realize is that when your throat relaxes you can actually feel it relax. It feels comfortable. Thank you so much. You are a wonderful teacher.

Singing with an open throat is best, but you're doing it wrong. Drop your jaw, then inhale with an abdominal breath, then exhale using the abdominal muscles, then immediately after you feel air move through your throat, make the sound (whatever note you want to hit). That's how opera singers sing and it's the most healthy way to sing. It's how women can be louder than an entire orchestra and go on for an hour with their throats being just fine. Your throat should never hurt after singing and your voice should never sound raspy after singing no matter how loud or how long. Even the Army teaches this by instructing soldiers in march to let a breath out and connect it with notes otherwise, you'll hurt yourself.

well, to know opening throat you simply open your mouth wide and hold your nose and try to breath just using your mouth, and there you go, you opened your troath. because when you breath with your mouth, the air will pass to your troath. But this is not an excercise though.

I don’t find opening my throat an easygoing experience for me, because I learned how to do that in middle 🏫 when I took a Choir class in the 7th Grade. I learned the same thing in elementary 🏫 back when I participated in the chorus. When I sang “Ice on her Lashes” by Brooke Fraser on Zoom in January 2021, I had to open my throat toward the song’s resolution for the “Isn’t it?” part for a total of 5️⃣ minutes or less within the ballad’s running time. 👍🏻 if you tried before on karaoke segments.

Today though i feel like my neck is tensed and also my resonating space is under my throat(actually it was all the time yesterday too and i couldn't get it to be forward in my mouth while singing) . I also realised today that i sing breathy as i get higher. Do you think it is overuse or vocal damage or did i do something incorrectly? Thank you.

I"m looking at this again Freya. Its a great video. Now, I'm trying to sing opera and as yet I have not got much going on with my head voice. Its quite thin. I wonder if that tip you gave about "dislocating" the jaw at the hinge, is the thing I need to do to get the open throat going. Or have you got a more in-depth video on this topic. I'm a soprano. I'm just not getting anything exciting happening in my head voice. No richness and I'm frustrated because the yawn trick isn't working for me. I feel I need to do more than lift my soft pallette but I just don't know what else to do. Maybe you've already got a video on this topic.

hi +Freya very informative video!! :) Got a question... When I try and create openness at the back of the throat, I feel like my tonsils close the back of the mouth. My tonsils are not infected/swollen. I am able to carry the sound into the pharyngeal/nasal cavities and get the 'ping'. But, are the tonsils sometimes an obstruction to creating an open space at the back of the throat ?

Even if it is just simply giving me stuff to practice, or sing, or whatever, i am like desperate to learn how to sing, and do it well.. i want to be a modern rock singer so bad.. like the band periphery. I need help, and i feel like I have no idea how to sing stuff i need to sing, or how to make it sound better, or good. everyone is so good, but i've studied like countless videos, and tips, and tricks, and i feel like i cant sing as good as i should be able to sing. when i sing high stuff, i have no idea what mixed voice should sound like on me, but i have a good feeling i am doing it all wrong.. and when i inhale into my stomach, diaphram, it's hard for me to know if im doing that right as well.. high notes are always high for me, and i see that you have this open sound, and it sounds like it should sound, balance, and not squished. what should i do? you can message me at buseness.acc@yahoo.com
