So I'm learning to sing, but I find that rapping helps relieve my throat tension for when I sing. For me I think it's because singing seems like I'm supposed to have a whole different voice for some reason. I understand that's not the case, but rapping helps cause it is my actual voice and it's warming up all my throat muscles really. In order to rap properly you have to just let your jaw almost hang with no tension and air has to flow smoothly through your throat and off your tongue. So if you are having trouble singing I would try rapping to warm up, but don't push your air out all rough and start yelling like Eminem or NF, those two artist know what they're doing and have been doing it for years. just let it flow nicely and eventually it'll help tension all around for singing as well
@healthyvoicetips4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your suggestion. You are right rapping is like speaking and singing requires a little bit different muscle coordination.

You have such a pretty voice! I was just diagnosed with laryngeal dystonia and I've had it for 20 years. Using your voice is always a finding a balance. Therefore, I say to all my clients to focus on vocal effort. That is the best guide: listen to the muscles and if you feel you are doing too much, you are probably doing too much. Try to lessen the muscle effort and see if that feels better.

Guys, after this video, I was thinking over the way I speak... I work as an online teacher and it requires me to be sitting all dsy long and I often felt pain and throat tightness when I taught clssses sitting and I didn't when I was standing. Then, I saw that the main problem wasn't the way I was speaking, but the armrests of the chair. The armchairs were to high and made me rest my arms and adopt a crooky position. This position would tighten all my torso and cause the tightness. I hd suffered from everyday pain and hoarseness for 4 months and now I don't feel anything anymore. Thank you doc!!!

I'm a bit shocked to notice that when I yawn with my mouth open, I can barely feel my larynx moving down, maybe just a few millimeters. When that intentional yawn becomes a real yawn, there's some movement, but I lose the contact with my larynx, it's as if it moves in deeper into my neck (I'm skinny, so really don't know where it's moving to, I just stop feeling the bony bits). I don't feel what I expected to feel: simply the larynx descending. When I yawn with a closed mouth, my impression is that the larynx moves down a slightly bit more, but that might be "wishful thinking" :) What certainly moves down a lot is the whole part that one would call "double chin". And when I swallow, the upward movement is also very clear. I know (and was told by singing teachers) that I tend to sing with my larynx too high, but watching your video and doing the exercises makes me feel like I'm unable to lower it at all! I even tried doing laryngeal massage and then trying to yawn again, but no difference. Could it be that my jaw/neck tension are preventing the larynx from moving down when trying to yawn?

Moving your larynx consciously is al earned skill. I am sure your larynx is able to move up and down but it's not under your control yet. It took me some time to figure it out. Yes, it is possible that some tension in the muscles that keep the larynx up may prevent the larynx from moving down but I bet with more practice you will be able to move your larynx more down.

ive always had pain when I tried to sing. I can sing in tune if I try but I dont sing ever because after a few seconds it hurts and I cant do it. Im going to work on this. It would be so cool if I could start to sing after 40 years haha

I would suggest speaking to a singing teacher. There is something that you do that causes the pain - maybe too much constriction or effort. A singing teacher can help with that.

this definitely releases tension in my throat but now I sound crazy, I sound like yawning
@healthyvoicetips4 жыл бұрын
Do the exercise several times before you sing or speak. That will release tension. Then you speak or sing and voice production should feel easier. If not, try to keep the larynx in a slightly lower position but not completely down.

Tried it and it instantly made my voice richer. Thanks! Quick question though, how much time should I do this exercise? I plan to add this to my daily vocal exercise. Thanks!

Whatever works for you. A few minutes should be sufficient. Maybe after some time, you will not need this exercise because our needs change.

Thank you so much, could you talk about Diplophonia, please?
@healthyvoicetips2 жыл бұрын
Diplophonia is when there are two different tones created at the level of the vocal folds. It usually happens when vocal folds vibrate at two different frequencies for whatever reason. If this is not something you are doing on purpose, I would check with a laryngologist to see what is happening at the level of your vocal folds.

Hi Katarina, Excellent video! Thank you for your wonderful effort. I noticed your pronunciation of "video" (0.06) is a bit odd. Please check it and let me know what you think. Thanks, Albert from San Francisco, USA
