Foundry VERSION 12 PREVIEW is here! - Easier usability is coming!

The major features of Foundry VTT version 12 have been revealed! Although we are still waiting for version 11.5, we already have a preview of version 12 thanks to Foundry's latest blog post! This new version will include things like Event Triggers and an overhauled Game World! Let me run you through the revealed features and my thoughts on them! Foundry version 12 preview is here!

Yay for token animations! Although it's just API level stuff in v12, it can open the door for some really cool stuff! Absolutely wait for a while once the first stable release of v12 comes out.

I'm really excited for the ux/ui changes! I love Foundry's features, and the kind of wild west feeling from a new program coming into its own, but it is definitely made for people code-ier than I am. 😅 Hey, question for you all: do you have a preferred external world building system/program/software, or do you do it all internally? (World Anvil, Legendkeeper, Google Docs, Notion, a rolodex...) If you do it *in* Foundry, how do you do it? Mods? The stuff that's there? Do you link maps to articles and images? I find myself almost afraid to update sometimes, because it can break the backlinks and journal enhancements. I do backup and can restore, but again, for a less savvy user, the thought of losing months of work is not appealing. 😅

Foundry definitely needs a UI and UX ocerhaul as you mentioned, it is kind of programmer oriented. I personally am not much of a world builder DM so I tend to use ready made settings, and as such, I just refer to online resources and bring stuff over to Foundry in Journal Entries. Some times I use images in the Journal Entries but mostly I just write stuff in them and don't really use any additional modules in relation to this. I keep it fairly simple since that's not my area of interest, but I do know there are modules for World Anvil and Legendkeeper to import information from those services. I understand the apprehensiveness to update to a new major Foundry version but if you back up all your worlds and data, there's nothing to be afraid of since you can downgrade and restore your backups.

My only problem with foundry is they update so much that its rough on the mods. Mod developers who make no money must get frustrated fixing all the time ( look at the gm screen drama) i like foundry but it feels like alot

Totally understand the frustration. This is actually something I discussed in my interview with the creator of Foundry! The interview will come out today at 6PM EEST (9AM PST, 12PM EST).

Thats one of the reasons I refrained from updating modules I helped or worked on like Better roll tables or the enhanced version of lootsheet NPC. I rather wait a bit for the underlying API to be matured.

I am upset that the 5e SRD is not available. And I am not paying for DnD Beyond.

What do you mean? 5e SRD is available with the DnD 5e game system. You can find all the different items, monsters, class features etc. in the compendium packs of your game world.

@@DiceAndEasy I upgraded to 11 and my compendiums were either nonexistent or bare. The SRD listings were nonexistent. I had DnD categories but totally empty because I do not subscribe to WOTC owned content. Yep, I will have to go back to version 10. At least I hope my exported world saved properly. (•heavy sigh). I am not a programmer by any means. I am a consumer. (Another heavy sigh).

I also upgraded to version 11 recently and they are still there but they have moved inside the compendium packs section. Now at the very top of the compendium packs list, there is a new folder called "DnD 5e SRD Content" which is colored red. Under there you can find all the 5e SRD content, so you shouldn't have to switch back to v10.

Windows Vista had “DLL hell”. Foundry has “module hell”. Why can’t they just suggest one module that brings everything else together?

Because it's not that simple. "Bringing everything together" would take adding all those modules as Foundry core features. Remember that Foundry is not a huge corporation. It's a company of less than 10 people so the amount of new features they can implement is limited.

They could probably go bigger but that would most likely change Foundry's payment model to a subscription based one.

@@DiceAndEasy no, I'm actually talking about just coming up with a "creators recommended module" that will automatically add all of the MUST HAVE modules as a dependancy. Because for a new DM like me it's soo complex to set up those 90 modules manually. It's so overwhelming. This would've allowed for better new user adoption, better revenue, etc

What revenue sources do Foundry have besides the $50 purchase of the application? If no other sources, then I would suggest $50 for first time purchase and then a smaller fee, say $5, per new version (ie V11, V12, V13 etc..)

It’s just the $50 one time purchase. I highly disagree with adding another payment for a new version. One of the strengths of Foundry is its relatively affordable one time purchase and they shouldn’t lose that.

Foundry sells modules of adventures which also brings in revenue for them.

I think it's unfair to say that every module you rely on breaks. Many modules do break but many also get updated to support the new version.

@@DiceAndEasy System, not modules. All my systems require modules. All my systems get broken. Most modules get broken. Some are fixed, which can take many months. Some are abandoned. And so it goes on and on. I know that many developers are fed up with it.

Love your videos dude you're awesome. Not a huge deal if you're a veteran and know not to update willy nilly. Lot's of new users assume update is ALWAYS good. It monkey wrenches any current campaigns a person might be running most of the time. @@DiceAndEasy

@@Numberi True! Updating is risky business and the average user might not realize it. I have a tutorial for how to update from one major version to the next in the works at the moment.
