Foundry is such a good VTT that within 1 year of running my games on it, I managed to convert 6 of my friends and 2 of my friends' friends to using it for DMing purposes. Considering I'm the only one who had to pay for a license initially, that is some insane marketing power. Word of Mouth does a lot - but experiencing it for free? Even better.

Excellent video that helped me make the call back when you posted it. We played on Roll20 for years, also tried Fantasy Grounds (Ultimate version $10 per month), then went back to Roll20 ($8 per month Pro version) for several years. After much debate and research (and viewing videos like yours), my group moved to Foundry VTT (one person, GM, one time $50 dollar purchase). Yes, even though we had purchased the resource books on Roll20, we still switched and we are NEVER going back to Roll20. We also all switched to DnDBeyond to create and import characters and for all resource and sourcebooks (DDB and Foundry VTT can be linked via a Chrome extension). So FOUNDRY VTT with DNDBEYOND for the ultimate gaming experience. We also use Foundry's in-game Video but Discord's free audio running in the background.

Its funny that you wrote off Fantasy Grounds because it has a learning curve. It makes me, at least, doubt the rest of your analysis if you didn't actually look at it. It fully supports a huge number of games - practically any system out there can be supported and played via the CoreRPG generic ruleset and it has over 20 licensed RPG rulesets right now. It is as full featured as a VTT comes. But... I absolutely hear your "use whatever you want you aren't cheating on anyone" approach. Whatever keeps you gaming is my thought. :)

Using it for some day now, and I'm in love. Way beyond Roll20 indeed. It's a bit overwhelming at first, there's a learning curve, but it's not a big deal. In fact tool's complexity is always there to facilitate the use ingame. For instance the macro system is deep, but when you use it in game it makes everything so easy for players... "go on your character sheet, click on the skill you want a macro of, drag and drop to your macro bar, use it". It takes players 1mn to understand how to use the macro bar, 10mn to fill it at will, and then you can play for hours without having to open your sheet and lose time to look for skills. About communities I don't have a full view of it, I'm just following the one about Cyberpunk Red system, and boy... I'm stroked by its reactivity, its efficiency and its seriousness. Pretty kind guys too.

@kabobawsome
@kabobawsome 4 жыл бұрын
I appreciate that, in Foundry, support for Pathfinder 1E, specifically, is more than just marginal, like it is in Roll20. Sure, it's there, but it's not very well supported (they could have easily put the whole ruleset in, legally, as long as they changed names, but they just have core only for some reason). Sure, Foundry's Pathfinder system doesn't have it all working yet, but they are working on it, unlike Roll20, which is totally stagnant. And it's crowdsourced, so I regularly see messages in the Discord that are just like "Hey, programmed in every single class feature of every single base class, here they are, enjoy!"

I am considering getting a virtual tabletop for a completely custom game system. So I dont need any of the official rules licenses, but I do need something that will allow for a custom rule set. Any recommendations for which would be the best for this? If it helps any, my game is a cooperative dungeon crawler with no GM, and uses a dice pool mechanic rather than a d20. Its something of a cross between the D&D adventure system board games and descent.

I'm looking at making the jump (finally) to Foundry from Fantasy Grounds Unity, as that product is going to be a little too steep of a learning curve for a group I will be GMing for in a couple months. Since I have D&D Beyond (LOVE it!), I love the fact that my players can use their character sheets on that and have them linked directly to Foundry. As such, I'm looking at a ton of KZbin videos on Foundry to try and get a better feel for it. Which leads me to ask, in regards to what you said near the end, do you still feel the same about Foundry?

Not having ACCESS offline to my content is a game breaker. Having to rely on another platform AND third party plugins to pull in our use official content is not a good model for accessibility. Foundry is great platform for homebrew and the more modern interface, but mainly as someone that would prefer or like to create their own content. However, IF I cannot take a couple batteries with a laptop and not be able access my content, it's almost dead to me. Foundry is the best "HOMEBREW" content host. I have seen & watched videos that claim that Foundry is only $50 dollars , that is a big nope. It is actually $50+, the cost of a DDB scraping tool Extension & a DDB account. So on average, 50+60+ (DDB Account Content), FGU Ultimate is USD, $150+ $30 for an 'official' PHB is about $180.00 dollars , depending on your license level or if you have a subscription account. Foundry is like twenty dollars less than FG or Roll20 and relies on two different and separate pieces to be functional for most official content. Purchasing the SAME content three time's IS for three different uses, needs, and overall experiences, it's the re-adaptation, and maintenance, you are paying for, not so much the same thing. Too many more points of potential failure. No thanks!
@MrJoeyWheeler
@MrJoeyWheeler 3 жыл бұрын
If you just port forward then the DM always has offline access. Only players don't (but then no VTT does that for players). If you don't have any scruples about it, there is an unauthorised plugin for foundry which makes things even easier. In any case, the root of your problem is the fact that you paid into D&D Beyond in the first place. You buy digital products only accessible in one place, you pay the price.

"the foundry module that let's you import stuff directly from DNDBeyond into foundry including complete adventures" might be the most spectacular thing you have ever seen. But it is also a spectacular violation with the Terms of Service of DNDBeyond and according to copyright laws it can be seen as a spectacular pirating tool. @polyhedron3386
@polyhedron3386 4 жыл бұрын
I don't know the details, but I'm not sure it's in breach, since essentially it downloads the maps and uploads them to foundry, and the maps are offered for download when you purchase something on DNDbeyond, and you can use those maps in your VTT. I'll ask the dev about this but I'm not sure this is more of a violation than printing the map for your physical game.

@@polyhedron3386 Your own characters - i am pretty sure that is ok. Maps... maybe. Monsters, NPCs, magic items.... for sure not. Please check up the details yourself. @@martijnsanders8527 Hi mate, Sebastian here. Before I started in the importer, I reached out to D&D Beyond to check on the legal side of doing this. I talked to one product manager of one of the three depts and showcased the functionality including monster import. I received an (informal) OK. I do believe in providing a bridge between both worlds, Foundry and DDB, therefore all links imported are eg back-linking to DDB instead of linking to Foundry entities (which would be doable). I do believe that copyright and paying artists, writers and other staff is mandatory for feeding families and receiving high-quality content. I do believe that DDB generates sales due to the integration and that's a great thing. Still: If Ddb reached out to me (and we are in contact), I absolutely find a solution that works for them and I loathe the idea of an public API and a secure (and probably less cumbersome) usage for everyone

I can't find a community to play dnd with and I'm on roll20 and been trying to join a game, but no one is answering their pms. Anybody know a discord community??

I'm looking at shifting from roll20 but I wanted to check how well Foundry works for playing games other than D&D. I wanna try running my World of Darkness: Orpheus game on it but don't wanna spend $50 for Foundry if I will have nothing but compatibility issues. I am totally willing to manually enter everything such as stats, actions, classes and such if it won't be a nightmare like I've experienced with roll 20. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm sorry, I am totally new to this.... and love your review, however being "computer impatient" ... there is so much, too much information and it doesn't actually answer my questions. Unless what I am looking for is impossible? Our group played D&D 3.0... and it is most of us, our only social time (we are old, married, etc etc lol) So to sit at a table, watch each other roll dice and cheer, laugh....or cry.... it was our de-stressor:) I can't seem to find an online game for our group that - we can create characters together, watch online dice roll, put them to attributes, then play and see each others expressions (and talk). Playing and watching the dice roll to whatever outcome (as a group) is a big part of the fun, creating your character as a group..... is seriously like Christmas.... lol. Again, I'm sorry, I've watched, googled and looked, but being a Newbie to online things.... there was alot of information that just scared me away. Then, seeing your review, you are amazing and I hope to find out...if there is a system that is, or close to what I'm looking for? Thanks soooooo much if you find the time to answer!!!

So far tale spire, for me, has been a very cool 3d map making tool. I have access to the alpha, but currently afaik The lack of in game character sheets (will be working on) , other players having to purchase, and small issues in it's early development that's to be expected I'm preferring foundry.

I wuld say the interface is really nice, much better than roll20. But some systems are very green. For example, Cyberpunk is quite not yet there, while roll20 has a couple of very acceptable char sheets there.

Foundry supports many different RPG systems, currently (as of this comment), it supports 88 systems. I only play D&D 5e so I'm not sure how robust these other systems are but it is constantly growing and I would highly recommend that you check it out. And if monkeying around with port forwarding and trying to get your players to connect to you isn't your thing, there is an online option: The Forge (though there is a fee for this). I've been using Foundry for roughly 4 months as a DM and I like it way more than Roll20 or Fantasy Grounds. Just my opinion though.

role 20 and Foundry fall short for actually running a game.. compared to Fantasy Grounds, that has so much automated, and combat tracker that it is way way better product overall. Fantasy Grounds is the top product, and the learning curve is not hard, but you do need to learn it, after one or two games your all set.

no ! its a onetime purchase ! But you need a Computer and an internet connection to host it (this can be your personal computer, but you need a decent internet connection to make it work) In case you have a "slow" connection you probably would need to host it somewhere.

One issue. My reading of the DnD Beyond terms of sale and terms of use makes it appear to me that using tools like VTTA to import DnD Beyond assets into Foundry VTT violates those Ts and Cs.
@polyhedron3386
@polyhedron3386 4 жыл бұрын
There's a comment here somewhere made by Sebastian the developer of VTTA that he actually showed the tool to a dndbeyond product manager and got their informal blessing. But of course it's up to you if you feel comfortable using it or not.

@@polyhedron3386 Yes, I read that - it was a actually reply to my initial comment on this issue on an Encounter Library video. But is was not a product manager it was community manager - so, much further down the food chain, and who may, or may not have been in a position to actually know anything at all about DnD Beyond / Fandom's T's and C's - or may have known: no way for us to know, really. It was not a "blessing" it was just that it apparently looked "okay" to them. The T's and C's are actually pretty clear in this regard: "scraping" is not allowed - and that is exactly what this module is doing. Footnote: I tried it on the free adventure "Frozen Sick". Even understanding that the scene's would not import, it got about 20% or so into the material importing and then got stuck (and even that, inconsistently - I tried several times). It depends on how the HTML is constructed for its functionality.

@@cube1us so instead further discussing it or getting more in depth ... on the original Post, you are starting here again with the same assumption and ignore any information you got before ? .... you clearly have more information as in the beginning but ignore it, and decided your interpretation of their rules is superior to the Staff that is actually working for the company ?

Assumption my foot. I read the terms on the DanD Beyond website, in their terms of sale and terms of use. The language is quite clear. Have YOU read it? I’ll stack my ability to read contract language up against any “community manager” (read, PR/media rep) any day. Indeed I have written and enforced contract language that saved the organization I worked for millions of dollars.

So, 10 minutes later and all I know about Foundry is that he loves it because of D&D Beyond connectivity. Nothing about its features or what makes it better, just that he had more fun playing with it. Pretty information-less as far as an introductory video goes.

Perhaps you're naturally a different style of learner? Because I came away from this video with a bunch of info about several different vtts, how they worked for this person, the nature of the communities of each, info about responsiveness of Foundry's developer, additional video recommendations for next steps and validation for my fascination with Matt Colville's beard. What are some videos you liked better? I'd love to check them out and see if maybe its just a style thing.

roll20's sub model sucks for me and it's not that great compared to FG for me. i have found fantasy grounds great for every system. but i've got a bit of xml experience for creation. the one down side is that you need players that know the system as well as the gm needs to know it. and the installing the software by players can be annoying to get. came here as i'm getting foundry to try out.
@Siltoneous

I like the system, and have enormous respect for what it's accomplished. However, I don't play D&D, and until it supports a way for players and GM's to access legitimately purchased and licensed content OTHER than D&D Beyond, I can't support it. I've salivated over the fantastic work the author of the WFRP 4th system on Foundry has performed, but I've been informed they have explicit license from Cubical 7 to do that kind of deep integration. The other systems? err... Copyright and IP are a damn mess, but companies must defend their rights, otherwise they loose it. It's a shame that dev's have to worry about that kind of thing, but they do. I suspect the ruleset developers will do what they will, and then cry "foul" and "how unfair" when some company forces them to take a ruleset down with a cease and desist; thus turning the company into the villian. Hey, I'll cheer Foundry and the developers on for their great work, but I won't purchase it until licensing and copyright are much more clear like they are with Fantasy Grounds and Roll20.

I totally get it, and I think it's great that you make a point of supporting the publishers. Personally I use Foundry mainly for D&D5e, and I've invested heavily in DNDBeyond content so it works well for me. I'll do some more research on the other licenses as I start levering the other systems, I want try Blades In The Dark and WFRP4.

I used to play 1st and 2ned DnD. Now Id like to try 5th ed, use FoundryVTT BUT I'd like to use: www.dmsguild.com/browse.php?filters=0_0_0_0_0_0_45545_0&src=fid45545 . It's basically 5th ed but split up in to small adventures... Are the dmsguild.com adventures built for VTT (namely Fantasy Grounds) able to port over to Fantasy Grounds or would I have to use some sort of "module" to import the adventure on dmsguild.com?? It's confusing but Ive decided to use the FoundryVTT but concerned about my adventure choices. There are alot of solo adventures Id like to try at dmsguild that I don't see on DnD Beyond and thats a problem unless Im not finding them on DnDBeyond... You seem to have more xp in this. Whats you take?
