12 floors...... good lord. I don't think my heart would survive entering here, not ever... But it does explain how some JP instagramers can achieve such perfect color matches with their sutff! The organisation of event and idea of providing you with tools to test ink is great! You can go into the show with 0 equipment, it's so cool... And silent atmosphere is also so cool, feels like more ceremonial, in a way (does it make sense? All the ink can make one's head spin so much... I never saw such tiny Parker either, I feel like in Japan some tiny bottles of inks are easier to get! I once saw a small KWZ bottle, it was very new for me since I never saw anything but 60ml bottles... You pronounced Inkebara correctly, they are cool but their bottles are a source of a headache.They spill all over! Ah... I'm also a bit shocked over kuretake, I never heard of them doing fp ink! It's quite an easy brand to get internationally so it feels a bit hopeful! Yellow ink brings Pelikan highlighter fountain pen to my mind... And oh, all those inkbooks are a delight! Truly lovely stuff, thank you for showing it all off and giving us a glimpse!!

I *love* that idea of paper striping. Ink swatches are all well and good, but the ink is going to react to different paper differently. This way, you get a 'true to life' example. Brilliant.

Thanks for the very enjoyable view of an Ink Show in Japan! Love how clean, tidy and quiet it was, though covering the lower walls and ink boxes suggests that some folks might not be as careful slinging ink as others. :) I also appreciate the lady with three strips of paper for testing the inks. Very ingenious! Maybe you didn't "sample" the inks, but you sure recorded (filmed) a bunch of them for ALL of us to enjoy.

Thanks so much Randy! I stayed till the end and looked around and there was just a bit of red ink on the floor near one shelf. I think people were pretty careful, but you know ink, it somehow ends up where you don't expect it hahaha!

So interesting how the show is set up and how organized. I probably wouldn’t test an ink that I couldn’t buy, in case I fell “in love.” Glad you’re the brave one for us taking a video as an unknowing tourist! 🤫 Sounds like it wasn’t a big issue after all. I prefer the green over the yellow ink but was great full for the sample writing because I was curious how well it would show. Love the inside look you provide and the fine details. Thank you for this interesting look into how a show in Japan is done especially in this new world. I love the look at a of the ink books and the lady that uses the three types of paper is ingenious. I don’t feel I would be a user of the yellow inks but the may work on toned paper? This may stop them from being washed out (or competing) with the white of the paper. Once again thank you so much for taking us on this ink adventure.

Thank you so much--it is fun to share with the community! I did try the yellow ink on black and navy colored paper and they basically disappeared. I will need to try it on other paper and maybe textured paper or water color paper. I would think artists may like this ink. I'm keeping it as an ink additive to add to colors I think need more yellow.

Hi, do you have any thoughts on Ferris wheel press inks? I get the vibe it’s only popular because of its packaging and marketing but would love to know your thoughts.

Their packaging and marketing is definitely one of their strong points. The caps to their bottles of ink is one of the weak points (they always leak). Their color selection is pretty vast and they make colors that are popular. As far as the quality of their ink--is seems good (I only have about 10 bottles). They seem to run a lot like other inks--the saturated ones are very wet and the light/chromoshading ones are a little drier. Overall, I think they are a nice addition. They are popular over here because they nail the Japanese esthetic.

Thanks so much! It was nice seeing this show and they ran it very well for being in such an enclosed space. You had to wear a mask (everyone still does here) and they limited the number of people, but I was about the only one talking there hahaha!

Thank you for taking us along on this fun ink show. I wonder where the light, almost unreadable, ink trend is going. Soon we’ll need blacklight to read our own notes. That new Iroshizuku yellow/greenish ink is the same color as Mtn. Dew soft drink poured into a clear glass. I liked the set of 4 Iroshizuki inks, will be watching for them in the US. We are also impatiently awaiting the Iroshizuku cartridges.

Thank you! I saw the Iroshizuku cartridges there and had not seen them before--they look pretty cool! I'm predicting that large companies will include a light ink in their selection but I don't think they will go overboard--unless it's pink. For some reason there is a lot of pink light ink during cherry blossom season!

Wow! What an awesome show! I'm up to 100+ inks in my collection, and I'm still on the lookout for more. I've got to make it a point to go out there and see the show next year. Of the inks you have currently, which would you say is the most underrated or underappreciated ink? I'm sure you've answered this question 10 billion times, but as I'm starting to fill up my ink binder, I found myself wondering which ones I felt were underrated, so I thought I'd ask. Thanks so much! Actually I've not been asked that. What I have been asked that surprises so many people is: if I could only have one ink, what would it be? (Like on a deserted island). Pilot Blue Black. It is slightly waterproof but not so much that it makes it finicky or dry. Works in most pens. Very utilitarian. It surprises people, especially coming from me.

Yeah, I still think it's a mistake for pilot to get rid of Tsukushi. I picked up a spare for my museum of discontinued inks 😄. Was that lady referring to 1st, 2nd, or 3rd generation Tomoe River? Because they are different.

Very useful and beautiful to watch. A little bitter-sweet for me because covid interrupted my annual business trips to Tokyo and Itoya was always a highlight of my very limited free time. I had a long conversation with Jeremy at Flax Pen to Paper in Los Angeles about this trend toward lighter inks. The reaction you had to the Pilot ink I have to many lighter colored inks. I like the idea of mixing them! There's so much written about the dangers of that, but with today's formulations, I'm guessing you don't worry about it too much. Would love your thoughts! Thanks again!

Thank you so much Michael! I hope you can make it out here soon again. I haven't been to the States in over 2 years! Flax Pen to Paper--I need to go there! So interested in US stationery stores--we need more of them. I don't worry at all about mixing inks. If I really like a particular color, I will mix the inks in a separate bottle, but I've straight up gangster mixed right into a bottle of ink before. I will also use that ink in an inexpensive pen at first, to make sure it's OK. But with all the glitter, iron gall, and chromoshading inks out there, I think some of that advice was to keep you in the same company's "line" of ink. Just always mix in a separate bottle and test first with a dip/glass pen and then an inexpensive pen and I don't think you can go wrong.

I've heard of pen shows, but I never imagined an INK show! I know people get worked up about pens, but for me the hobby is all about the ink addiction once you've dipped your toes in. 😂 Thank you for showing off all these inks and the environment. I feel like a video of just the mild noise and a camera off in the corner would be very calming like ambient cafe noise. Of course I know that video isn't happening, but it's a thought. 🙂 I love the inks you showed off. These new light inks that are getting popularized are pretty, but I'm desperate for obnoxiously bright and saturated colors, myself. 💜

That would be an awesome video--just people quietly testing ink! I think I am an "opposites" kind of person and I love really saturated inks (in a fine nib) and really light inks (in like a Pilot Parallel). I'm kind of short on "normal" inks hahaha! Thanks--glad you enjoyed it!

Actually, I sampled no ink at all while I was there hahaha! I was so busy filming and talking to people that the time just flew by. I just grabbed bottles I thought looked interesting! Most people had enough time but there were a few stragglers.💖

Can you recommend a wide nib that delivers some of these paler ink colors with legibility? I like subtle greens, browns, yellow, etc, prefer warmer cream colored stock like Tomoe River, but some of these inks die on the sheet, and I only use them for embellishments thru an Automatic Pen, or wide Pilot.Parallel.

Since you use a Parallel, I would experiment with varying sizes of italic nibs. Also what may make a difference is if you do cursive kind of writing or more say, italic. So that may determine if you use a stub like nib or a sharper one (like a crisp italic). For my size writing, I use a 1.1 but I sharpen it a bit (slight grinding and polishing). I also choose wetter inks or use something like white lightening.

Your videos are sooo beautiful! Excellent edition as usual and very interesting information. Lately I've been thinking in going to a penshow, but I'm kind of afraid of going alone... any tips or advices for a newbe at penshows?

Thank you--so glad you like them! I was actually thinking about making a vid about that very topic. But the biggest piece of advice is to enjoy yourself. The pen community is so very friendly and supportive (compared to so many other hobbies) and people seem to enjoy sharing. You will have fun!

@@InkyRocks thanks for the encouragement. Not the first time I heard about how friendly is in the hobby...😅 I'll try to go to the next one taking place at my region. Still any advices would be helpful. I'm afraid to feel overwhelmed and not take advantadge of it. Like ... idk... is it better to start with the ink tests? Go direct to a nib meister and try to get one of my nibs tunned? Or would it be better to try to get the exclusive inks of the show no matter what...? What other thinks do this pen shows offer usually? What about drinks/food? The answers I'd love to see in a video with your experienced point of view.🥰

at 12:37 the dark green one with 24 next to it and the one right above it (on top of the purple.) also are these inks available in the U.S.? Nagasawa Kobe is fantastic with their smooth performance; I wonder what makes them as such..... If it means anything I thought I could rest for my search for the perfect dark green.... but the Kobe inks I got were olive-y? They looked dark green on the site but weren’t when I wrote with them.... # 15 and 34 and another one I forgot to write down the names....

The name is cut off at the bottom so I have no idea what inks they are. I believe Nagasawa inks are made by Sailor and that's probably why they are so good. I love them. One of the reasons I'm keeping the yellow ink is because so many of the dark greens are too blue for me, so I'm going to experiment with adding that yellow!

@@InkyRocks youre right about that because i was a little down when I got the iroshizuku ... Name of the new green escapes me.... it was blue-r than shin ryoku but like it none the less..... I believe theres some more nagasawa kobe dark greens I havent seen yet so ill discover those.... #15 and 34 are oilive-y and not really dark so, theres that...

What a beautiful experience 😊 TFS what it was like. It’d be amazing to have attended. I’ve never been to a pen/ink event but hopefully something comes near me soon. EDIT: Oh and what a coincidence. My sample of Pilot Hotaru-bi ink arrived yesterday. 😍 Reminds me of the pre-pandemic perfume shows and store events I’d go to. Everyone fully immersed in their hobby, trying new releases, re-testing complex blends, enjoying the company of other enthusiasts. I miss the camaraderie. 💞

@@InkyRocks Perhaps it’s time to make a trek? I haven’t been to Japan in ten years. We could be on two airships passing silently in the night? Hotaru-bi is neat. I’ve only tested it briefly with a glass dip pen and it was love, and then skepticism, and then annoyance, and then back to love. Hopefully it’s more even-keeled in a regular pen. Very smooth, I like the body of the liquid. One eye tells me it’s not difficult to read, but the other says otherwise. 🤷🏻‍♀️

That's a bummer. I think stationery stores are the best way to go to cover all the bases--art supplies, fountain pens, inks, office supplies. That way it can be multipurpose. Japan is such a stationery "heaven" that they can actually have only fountain pen stores or the like. But I'm banking on analog to continue to grow and maybe we will see more stationery stores in the future.

This is really the only type of ink event I'd ever be interested in attending. I'm a dozen years and many dozens of bottles plus samples deep by now, so the colour/property differences between inks that I have and inks I'm still looking for is too subtle to figure out just by looking at pictures on a monitor(with all the colour calibration issues that come with that). Browsing through a large selection and trying them on your own paper is really the only option at that point. Are you planning to get your hands on the four new Manyo chromoshaders or are they too difficult to get your hands on in Japan?

I hear what you are saying and think it was a valuable experience for many of the "inku-numa" ladies. If I see one of the new Manyo inks, I may get one, but I have so many chromoshders (and ink in general) it's rare for me to try to chase one down.

I wonder who could be using those light inks - artists maybe? I can't see myself using them for writing. They lack boldness, a quality I value in writing, so I don't like those muddy dishwater inks either. Were those squiggle examples executed with the show pens? The had great flex!

Yes, I'm not really sure. But I've had a long time pen pal that has always loved yellow and gray inks. I'm keeping this yellow as I think it would be handy to add to other inks if I want more yellow in it--like an ingredient or additive. I used flex nibs for those writing samples.

oh wow, I would have watched a full 2 hr live stream of you testing all those inks! BTW, you seem to be right about the demographics. In the U.S. most of the people that use FPs and care about inks are guys, but it seems reversed in Japan.

I don't know, it may be changing. When I first started this channel 2 years ago, my subscribers were ovewhelmingling men but its about half now. But here in Japan, the collectors seem to be dominated by men and definitely the ink people are women, but many of them aren't that interested in fountain pens.
