When we say pocket camera do any cameras really belong in pockets? Even if small enough a camera probably does not belong in jeans pockets. Not a good place for a camera. Hoodie pockets? Plenty of room but things can fall out of them as well. Coat pockets sure but try that in July!

Got an older Lumix LX100 mk ii - nice little everyday carry with great optics - low light, not so much, but tradeoffs are worth it for price and portability. IQ overall all is great.

Hi Stanley. I agree with your choices. I myself purchased the XPro3 a couple of months ago. I fully understood the cameras build and design idea and absolutely love it. It’s my personal camera outside my day to day work cameras which are much larger and cumbersome for travel or street. I also chose the XPro3 for the fact I can change lenses. Very happy with it. The Olympus Pen-F with the 17mm f1.8 is the obvious alternative and was for some time the main competitor to the X100 line. Then there's the Panasonic GX line of rangefinder style cameras. Plenty more affordable killer camera deals to be had.

I had X-Pro2. Loved that camera. Was a little big though. Then I bought Panasonic GX80/85 used for $200. Added Sigma 16/30/56mm F1.4 primes. Best combo ever. Though I would suggest getting GX9 if you can find for a good price. I may love this camera even more than fuji. Only if it had fuji film simulations. EDIT: It has amazing IBIS and tiltable screen. 4K 24P. Shutter speeds of 1/20 is not a problem with non stabilized lenses. I just love this little camera. Couldn’t think of a better camera for this little money.

Great work Stanley, very informative and rather timely as my very good friend lives outside of London in the UK and we were discussing this angle but from a seller's perspective, he reckons he could offload his Black V100V at the moment given the lack of available stock and surrounding manic hype for about 1500 pounds. Then in turn, we worked out he could net himself a barely loved and used Fuji Xpro2 and one of the three compact Fujicrons. That being the f2 - 23, 35 or 50mm. I told him to sell now. The window for opportunism and profiteering will never be better. Simple. The stars for selling are now perfectly aligned. Great final point with Leica, the unique rangefinder experience aside - nothing keeps its value like a pristine Leica-M - nothing - it isn't even close with the other Big 3' - 80% resale, 1 or even 2 years down the track. Easy.

@@legendofthecamera Thought you might wish to know Stanley - my friend in the UK sold his X100v, hold onto your hat when you read the price. So he originally paid 1300 pounds brand new and had it for 19months taking 3000 shots. Cheekily, he Ebay listed it for 1750 pounds. Less than 24 hours later -Sold- no questions asked! Expect to see similar silliness with the maligned and misunderstood Xpro3. Since it is discontinued and sadly it seems no successor is planned, prices will head skyward.

My alternative to the X100V is the Fuji X-T1 with the small Fuji 23mm f2 lens . I wasn't prepared to pay those inflated prices the X100V command's at the moment,, my alternate can be had for under 1k AUD.

It’s a shame that M43 cameras continue to be under appreciated. For amateurs and enthusiasts a GX85 and GX850 represent a better value, and the image quality (when used properly) rivals most APS-C cameras. Look closely at the Image Quality page of DPreview’s camera reviews. M43 will surprise most people who have little or no experience with it. These are all great cameras in the video, but if you’re on a tight budget, you still have other excellent choices. 🙏

The Ricoh GRII that I have is by far my favorite camera. While I would love to get one of the nice looking Fuji cameras or even a Leica, this little camera has changed photography for myself providing me with high quality images in a camera body so easy to throw in your pocket or bag that I never really second guess bringing a camera. While I would love to spend money on some of the other options I just don't have it, so my plan is to stick with the GR series and maybe go for a GRIIIx next. I just can't say enough about these little powerhouses.

I'd opt for the small X-T20 with either the xf23 f1.4 WR or the xf18mm f1.4 WR for a street walkaround. Both great lenses and the T20 even has that on-board flash if you needed it on the fly. No leaf shutter and a little more bulk are the only downsides.

I am 90 seconds into your video and I feel that you have overlooked two of the most important features when purchasing an x100 camera. The first is the leaf shutter and the second is the built-in ND filter. This combination is very powerful for crushing ambient light, and it really sets the x100 camera series apart.

I think these are really great features for OCF users, but I didn’t feel that most would-be x100 owners would fall into this camp. I also felt like the alternatives I suggested didn’t fall behind in this aspect. The GR3 similarly has an ND and leaf shutter, plus IBIS. Q2 also has leaf shutter and lens OS. (The x100 doesn’t have any stabilization).

Fantastic review . When I was looking for a camera a few years back that would do travel , street and portrait I procrastinated long and hard and finally settled on the Olympus EM 10 Mii. My choice will not be many peoples first or even second choice , which is why the final choice is always a compromise and a highly subjective one . I think your video proved there are other alternatives out there and it might be worth a trip to one of the big used camera stores to try out all the models on hits short list . If you can forgo the new purchase and spent the extra on a lens or better still on a trip to somewhere to trill your images then that is something else to ponder . Finally , can I encourage more of us to make photo books of our favourite images . You never know what technology will do next and having lost so many to photo sites or old computer drives , I was forced to not to just rely on making copies but to make books to tell our stories .

I had the EM5 mk2 at one point. It was a very fun camera with incredible IBIS. Pairs really well with the Panny Leica 25mm. I had it to replace my X100 mk1 back then 😂 I eventually replaced it with an XPro2 though, but missed the crazy IBIS the Olympus had. On your point about losing images, that’s definitely a reality nowadays. I might make a video about photo backup systems later on.

Thoughtful, well done look into these cameras. I went looking for a lightweight, portable over the shoulder all the time camera around the time the X-pro 1 was released. Bought one, used it for a year. Sold it as it wasn't really doing the trick (too operationally slow&Quirky). Went looking, Tried Olympus, NOT impressed. Sold it. Bought a Sony A7R. I was impressed but for different reasons.I've kept this one (even after all these years) but it's still heavier than I want walking around all day, so still looking for an all-day, every-day camera.Bought a Fuji X-100. Nice but the original was too slow. Bought a Lumix LX-100. Nice and fast, compact. Sharp, fast Leca 24mm to 70mm f1.7-2.8 lens. Wickedly good stabilization. Shoots awesome 4K video. Nice B-Roll to my G9. IQ is still veronica despite the smaller sensor, especially in video. Still, I'll probably break down and get another Fuji because I miss the FUJI COLOUR SCIENCE AND THEIR "LOOK" to go with my Nikons, Sony and Lumix cameras.I give up, just keeping them all with a foot in almost every camp. None of them really do it completely for me.Did I mention film cameras yet... But thanks, excellent video

I’ve owned (and still own) several Fuji bodies & lenses. It’s likely many of the hype X100V buyers won’t use the OVF, NDF.. and will glam it up with hoods, cases, etc. I’ve seen exactly this hanging from an ultra hip dude on Montana in Santa Monica. Once you ‘glam up’ the X100 line the slim/pocketable profile is pretty much gone…about the same size as an X-T/27mm combo..and neither are fitting easily in a pocket.. maybe a big jacket pocket. For anyone wanting something close & don’t know what OVF.. NDF.. are..so many options to get those Fuji colors. 27mm + X-E2,3,4.. X-T3,4,5 .. X-Pro2,3. .. X-T20,30,30ii. The GR is badass. X100V (without glam) fits in a pocket.. but the GR disappears in a pocket. I’ve replaced my X100V with an X-T4/27mm (walk around) and GR IIIx (stealth/discrete). only negative of GR IMO is that it’s not super robust and us GR owners are all on the clock until dust is on the sensor.. nothing above f8 for me. Thank you for this video. The issue with the hype buying of the X100V is that it’s not logical for the most part so there is very little listening to reason. A positive though is how many people are discovering Fuji. Cheers!

I loved my GR3 - if you can get a good price on that, I’d go for it. People do complain about the sensor dust issue though I haven’t personally experienced it.

It's the opposite of compact and I don't think it's commonly compared. But the user experience of the GFX50s is honestly pretty poor in my opinion. It's a first generation MF product and feels really slow and clunky to use for anything other than static scenes in good light, whereas the X100V is pretty much the opposite in its usage, plus it's almost pocketable too. I'd imagine given $2000 to spend, one would absolutely lean one way or another rather than be on the fence for these two.

I've been curbing my desire for this camera with my a7c and Zeiss 35mm 2.8 tiny prime. The benefit of this means I've got a camera I can use as a C cam at weddings for a safety angle but also have something tiny for day to day stuff! I do wish there were film emulations / recipes available for JPEGs for personal stuff so I didn't have to edit ALL the RAWs I take all the time....

Check out Veres Deni Alex. He has a KZbin channel. He's done a lot of work adjusting the Sony picture profiles to use them like film simulations, and has even made a few to replicate Fuji Eterna and Classic Chrome. They're not identical, but very close!

Your reference to the Voightlander with adapter has prompted me to look at alternative compact lenses and appropriate adaptors as a compromise.

Thank you for the feedback! The Xpro2 is a camera you could probably keep for a lifetime. It has two OVF magnification settings, which the Xpro3 does not. With the 3, you lose out on using wide angle lenses (wider than 23mm) with the OVF. Not sure how happy I am to have sold mine 😅 Definitely check out the voigtlander lenses. I’d recommend the M mount ones because you’ll be able to adapt them to anything. X mount voigtlander lenses are even more compact, but you lose out on being able to adapt them to other systems.

I can confirm that the Ricoh GRIII is probably the only option listed here that can comfortably fit in your jersey pocket or in a small handlebar bag. Another option that is smaller would be the Sony RX100VII - in fact, I'd probably recommend this for cycling photos as it has a superzoom built in with Sony's pro-level autofocus and still has a solid 1" sensor.

I think there is a distinctive magical element to having a truly pocketable quality that the X100 almost achieves and the GR3 definitely achieves, compared to just having a standard compact camera. I think the A7C + the new small G primes can be a very enjoyable setup to carry around, but it's still different from the truly pocketable experience. It's not far off from the X100 in size though - but less fun to use (imho), but much better autofocus and better image quality. Great setup nevertheless and pretty comparable if you're not planning on throwing money at the problem and end up getting everything haha.

I wanted to get a compact personal camera just to take pictures for fun, since I didn’t feel like taking my Sony A7 IV everywhere with me, so I thought I could get myself a Fuji X100V or X100F. But since it’s a bit too expensive right now, I ended up getting a used Fuji X-E3 for $400 bucks and I love it! The only feature I absolutely wanted to have is the film simulations and recipes, and the X-E3 delivers.

Fujifilm X-E4 is very similar to the X100 in size and performance. Pick your favorite lens and go. X-e4 body only is 850 or with 27mm f2.8 it’s 1050. Beat that!

X-E4 is a better value for sure. The main draw of the X100V over the X-E4 is the premium build, OVF, leaf shutter, and super compact 23/2 lens.

@@legendofthecamera premium build yes but the build of the X-E4 is very good but I admit it doesn’t have weather seal. OVF isn’t required anymore. The EVF is very good. In fact I never use EVF on my X-Pro2. Can’t argue the leaf shutter. I wouldn’t call the lens Super compact. I think the 27mm f2.8 is smaller. The X-E4 is 1050 with the 27mm and the V100 is 1400. That gives you enough spare change, I think, to get the 50mm f2.0. I went out and got the Sigma 30mm f1.4 for under 300. It was on sale.

It also has IBIS, which makes getting low light photos a breeze. I’ve gotten very solid photos from concerts in the past. For video I think you’re better off with an iPhone.

The cost of ownership is a great point. I'm planning to buy the x100V next year but I will only make that purchase if I can get the camera at MSRP or lower. If the new x100 camera is released. I'm guessing the x100v will go down in price by at least $50-100. I would definitely buy it at that point and put that $100 into a variable ND filter. I wonder what the next x100 would look like and the features it will offer.

Also check out the previous XE cameras from Fuji. I had an X100V but I realised I really enjoy using vintage lenses and replaced it with an XE-2. The XE-4 takes away too many manual controls for me (and that’s impossible to find/maybe discontinued as well). I’ll normally take the X-E2 out with just one lens - either a vintage one or the 27mm pancake - so I still get to experience the creative challenge of a single lens.

Agree, I got a used X-E3 for very cheap and I think I found my perfect camera. It’s more versatile and it gets very compact with the 27mm pancake :) What vintage lenses would you recommend for the XE cameras?

@@koiqueeen I don't have a vast collection: a Hellios 44-2, Helios 44-4, Industar 50 and a Petri 50mm. all M42 mount. The Helios 44 series is a good place to start. The 44-2 if you want the possibility of swirly bokeh under the right conditions (but be prepared to deal with an unusual two-dial aperture system) or the 44-4 for a more standard design and generally sharper images. The quality control on these lenses massively varies so two of the same model might have entirely different characteristics. The Industar 50 is tiny but with an M42 mount adapter it's bigger than the 27mm Fuji.

I found on Facebook marketplace a Fujifilm X100s for $600. Would this be worth a purchase? I have never used a Fujifilm but I’m very practical and appreciate its colors, “simplicity” that you can choose iso, shutter count and aperture. Just don’t know if it’s worth getting since it’s older. I’d like to add I’m not into vlogging or video content creations and I am NOT a professional photographer but I do love taking pictures.

I’d say that’s currently still slightly overpriced. Before the shortage, S models were available at $400-500. I think normally-priced alternatives are more worth it.

I have Ricoh GRD III. Paid something like 150 USD for it. It has f1.9 lens, so no high ISO is needed. Very liberating camera. BTW, it is false myth what nobody see you taking pictures because camera is small. It is gesture, even if you are doing hip thing, not the camera size.

Hi Alfred! Thanks for subscribing. That looks like a pretty old camera - if it’s a good deal, then I’d say go for it. It also has an APSC sensor so should output decent image quality. I haven’t personally used it, so I can’t say I’d recommend it or not. But I do have recommendations from the ones I have tried and I think the Ricoh GR3 would be a top choice in your case of supplementing your bigger pro kit. I just made a new video about it.

I would get a Sony a6X00 and a Voightlander Color-Skopar in 21mm or 35mm. I used an NEX-6 and a 21mm Color-Skopar years ago and it was a great light travel camera. I now use an old Sony A7 and a 40mm Rokkor-M. Poor man’s Leica. The original A7 was light and more compact than anything currently in the A7 lineup. A true film rangefinder and ultra compact camera is the wonderful Olympus XA with a 35mm 2.8. I carried one for over 20 years.

I love voigtlanders! I’d just be careful of the 21mm f/4P as the corner color casts are pretty terrible. I had that for a while - the size was fun and black and whites were great. I believe they fixed the color cast in the new 3.5 version.

I'd consider the Panasonic or Olympus MFT lines as well. The GX-85 or GX-9 are both practical and utilitarian. Look for an Olympus Pen F if the goal is full cool-kid, photo fashionista and camera as jewelry in the Fuji vein. @@conchscooter I was going to get one (as you are correct, they can be had pretty cheap in that config) but hunted around a bit and found a new in box GX9 with the 12-32 for 800 bucks on Ebay - should be here in a couple days. I bought it as a travel camera as I don't want to schlep my Nikon D7000 around anymore. The Nikon is still a great camera, but it's too much to travel with given the great options out there now. Looking forward to testing it this weekend.

Doesn’t appear to be any shortage of X100V here in Australia and they have even been discounting them at major online retailers. X-Pro 3 is retailing for the same price as the 100V. The price is AU$ 1960 which is roughly US$1310 so competitive globally but I do see international eBay 2nd selling way more so there maybe is a shortage in other parts of the world. Maybe there is an X-Pro 4 coming seen.

I would add the Ricoh GRIIIx to the list. The focal lenght is 40 mm eq, wich compares even better to the 100V, than the Ricoh GRIII. All you mention about the original GRIII, also counts for the GRIIIX.

I'll admit I was tempted to get the x100v at one point until I played around with one in store and realised I don't need it. I feel like a lot of people buying the x100v nowdays don't actually need the x100v, the camera is hyped by photography content creators because it has everything you need for pro/semi-pro use while still being compact in size as opposed to having to lug around full gear. If you were never someone who needed that to start with there is no point buying this camera just because it is hyped, im saying this because here in Asia I see a lot of literal beginner/ very amateur photographers buy it blindly as a first time camera just for it's "built in filters" after seeing videos on tiktok or KZbin or celebrities using it, it's compact but honestly still big for it to be pocketable. I have the original GR and although a bit slow, it still produces very nice images

Left Fuji and apart from missing Classic Chrome zero regrets whatsoever. Lumix GX9 and PL15mm, PL 25mm and PL 12-60mm. Better build quality, value for money and great black and white SOOC jpegs + IBIS & touch to shoot screen!

I really wanted the Fujiflim X100V but I just couldn't justify the $1400 price tag. That price is just for the camera alone and doesn't include the weather sealing kit and a spare battery. This alone adds an additional expense to an already very expensive. Fujifilm also recently announced that they are temporarily ceasing orders as they couldn't manufacture enough X100Vs right now. I am going to purchase the Ricoh GR III instead due to its compact design and the fact that I like to carry a camera with me everywhere I go. I can sacrifice weather sealing since I don't shoot in the rain although it would be nice for a future Ricoh camera to be weather sealed (I really hope the next iteration of the Ricoh GR camera will be weather sealed). Also, the Ricoh GR III has IBIS, which is very important since I tend to take street pics at night a lot in NYC.

As an alternative for the X100V, I would definitely have some variation of the X-E class bodies, I have and use the X-E2s and X-E3. The X-E3 has most of the speed of use as the X100V albeit without the optical finder, but with the advantage of interchangeable lenses. It is still available new and doesn't have the missing switches and dials that were left off of the X-E4.

BTW the X100 series arent a rangefinder cameras but viewfinder ones there arent any rangefinder mechanism in them like you find in a rangefinder camera like a Leica or other rangefinder cameras.

Correct, they are *digital* rangefinders with no mechanical rangefinder components, whereas the Leica M's are *mechanical* rangefinders.

Then again, many modern photographers are rediscovering film. True, shooting film requires a somewhat different view towards photography especially with an all mechanical camera. You can purchase a fine professional quality film camera for a fraction of any of the cameras reviewed here. I recommend taking a look at the Nikon rangefinder cameras. In particular the models S2, S3, SP, S4. They were manufactured from 1954-1964 and a great many are still working perfectly. I own and use two of them. There are also the S3 Millennial reissued in 2000 with a 50mm f/1.4 lens or an SP Anniversary released in 2005 with a 35mm f/1.8. These are fairly easily found and may make you very happy indeed.

I’ve had zero issues on this front with any of the Fuji cameras. They’re slightly recessed into the body and seem durable enough. They’re pretty great for just tossing into the bag.

@@NayveYT that’s a great question and very hard to answer, it would have to be the X100V. But to be fair, while the X100V is the best camera I’ve had, I do really enjoy using the 18 f2 and and 27 f2.8, but for simplicity and sophistication nothing comes close to the V, it’s no.1 Edit, I am a frequent Fuji forum member, since 2015, and there are a lot of really fine people and excellent photographers who have commented that my images are far better since I got the V, and I think they’re right, I carry it more so get more opportunities. I get a buzz from using it, bit like a hunter, except not hurting any animals 😁 Just so you know, my main photography is landscapes, hiking and social / family images. Image quality and portability are no.1 for me, but user interface make this camera special.

@@NayveYT you are welcome. I think the new one will have a 40mp sensor, maybe another film simulation, but any camera in the X100 range is going to hold its value quite well. My impression is Fuji are extremely smart at marketing and they are using the X100 range in a Leica direction, so they will never be cheap. The X100V produces brilliant images, the rendering is fantastic and they can be pin sharp. I don’t think you will go wrong with a purchase now. The next upgrade will probably be closer to a Leica price tag, but that’s me guessing.

Yeah, while it's an iterative improvement (nothing groundbreaking or unique, only bringing it in line with the XT5), it's still a pretty major as an upgrade and will no doubt add tremendously to the usability and fun of this camera. Enjoy!

Great video on a very timely topic - subscribed! If I may, I would add one of the previous generations of X100 bodies (S, T, and F) to your list. The X100F in particular is a wonderful camera. Its sensor is a generation older than the V so it lacks some of the latest film sims, and it has the older lens which was a little soft wide open and close up, but it’s still a gem. Good used ones are a little scarce and priced accordingly, but still more affordable than the inflated Vs at the moment.

It's also worth noting that a lot of the previous x100 cameras have also had a big old jump in price lately. I was looking at buying an original x100 camera 6 months ago and they're now almost 1.5x the price. Still leagues behind the x100v but the resale market is very spicy because of it

I’m surprised you mentioned Leica as an alternative to the Fuji because they’re way too expensive lol. I will say that their value is excellent if you had to sell it because you will make your money back very easily. The Fujifilm x100t I’d say is the best bang for your buck and I even think the pictures look way better than the newer models because of the aging x Tran sensor. I had the x pro 3 at one point and used classic chrome on it. Hate to say it but I didn’t like the way it came out. Whereas the older fujis I’ve used and owned looked very close to film.

In making this video, I was thinking more along the lines of “luxury compact point and shoot alternatives”, since that’s basically what the x100v is. But speaking in terms of pure value within the Fuji universe, I agree with you to simply go with older Fuji cameras. I had the xpro2 for many years and I loved it. For a point and shoot, you don’t need the latest and greatest autofocus, and image quality hasn’t drastically improved in the past 5-8 years with these cameras. One Leica pick I must mention as a great value pick however is the M 240. It had beautiful film simulations and is currently at the rock bottom of its depreciation curve. It was $2500-3000 in 2019 and now it’s still sitting around $2500. If you bought it for $2500 back then and sold it now, it was basically a free 3 year rental 😂.

It’s on the default settings pretty much. I just tried to get a high signal to noise ratio by putting it closer. Then I messed with the EQ in post until it sounded better. I’m not much of a sound guy so there’s not much else for me to mention 😂

This is all purely opinion about audio, but a cardioid might fit your voice better. Or some fine tuning to your voice in post: it sounds too wet on my iPad Pro’s speakers. Again, just opinion - you might love the way it sounds and there’s no issue with the sound quality.

@@legendofthecamera I’m equally a novice when it comes to audio. Davinci Resolve has a Dialogue Processor (in Effects) that can make voices more wet/dry. And playing with the equalizer helps too. Other than that I just watch Curtis Judd on KZbin 😅

I bought the x100v on a whim from an eBay auction for a small discount right when it came out who knew it would get so hard to find . I feel like the Xe3 and 23mm lens would be the move . I have the xe4 I like it but those lack of buttons threw me off for a bit .

For me, the Fuji X-100 series, the Fuji X-Pro series, an a couple of micro 4/3 cameras were to serve as temporary alternatives to the full-frame Leica M digital camera that I planned on buying. Eventually, I purchased a Leica M10 to use with my following lenses: 21mm f/1.4 Leitz 35mm f/1.4 Zeiss 90mm f/2 Leitz However, my Fuji X-Pro 2 with the following Fujinon lenses proved to be more reliable than my M10 which spent a lot of time in the repair shop. 16mm f/1.4 23mm f/1.4 56mm f/1.2 Plus, my weather resistant Fuji X-Pro2 body with the weather resistant 23mm f/2 Fujinon lens was a great alternative to the Fuji X100 camera. Bottom line, for me, the Fuji X-Pro2 was a better alternative to the Fuji X100 and a better alternative to the Leica M10.
