I think one of my children took my Planet Whizbang Idea Book, and rather than fight to get it back, I'm probably going to have to buy another one. I really do love that little book, it has a lot of great ideas in it. I'm just starting a new garden, and since we all love carrots, I will be making a bed like this one for them. Of course, I won't be able to use it until next year, but Rome was not built in a day. I'm so thrilled to see you on KZbin, Blessings to you, and thank you for sharing with us here.

I am very interesting in using techniques of vertical farming/gardening but in a residential setting as in apartments or people's homes. This method of getting the carrots to germinate rather successfully per seed planted and in such a rapid scale I think can be adapted to the methods I have in mind for what I am working with. It is my contention that if households throughout the United States and world could grow fresh produce by allotting a small portion of their home to vertical gardening indoors that the impact it would have in fiscal savings on food costs could help to jumpstart local economies and also to have people eating more healthy at the same time. Thank you for this video I have added it to my playlist for green tech/sustainable living and also have subscribed to your channel.

In complete contrast, lettuce seeds will germinate in 2 days sown on a surface without soil covering..... Great video of an interesting technique....

there is a toxic element to CD if the metallic material ever falls into the soil as the CD ages. I am so glade in America our land is not an allotment issued by government and in some states there is no property tax (lord's tax)
@herrickkimball10 жыл бұрын
mechanicalbu11 Thanks for the information on CDs. Your mention of states without property tax has me intrigued. I did not know there was any place in this country that didn't have property taxes. Maybe Alaska? I'd love to know where I can go and not pay property taxes. I will seriously consider moving there!
@mechanicalbu1110 жыл бұрын
farmbeet Dewey Beach, Delaware. No property taxes since 1981, and Alaska, but outside city limits in certain zones, keep in mind Alaska is 90% owned by the feds and not the state of Alaska. Property Taxes in my opinion are wrong. it really means you do not own that land and it is a reminder to the tenant that the land belongs to the lord or in our case government. also governments tend to use the tax code to social engineer for example you can have land in a certain location that a politician wants for other purposes, so if he can force you off that land he will by using tax increases such that only the rich can afford the land you owned for the last 50 years. seen this tactic used all the time in northwest democrat owned Indiana. Politicians and especially democrats will stop at nothing trampling our interest to get more money at the same time achieving socialistic goals that will impoverish us all. it hard to find locations that are easy to live at that also have no property tax. politicians want money it's what they do tax and spend. but Dewey Beach, Delaware has the right idea.
@herrickkimball10 жыл бұрын
mechanicalbu11 Very good. Dewey Beach, Delaware. That's news to me. I completely agree with your opinion on property taxes. People should be secure on their land. Older people, especially, who are on fixed incomes often can't afford the taxes and are forced to move. Any tax that forces people off their land is immoral. Thanks for the comment.

We have intense wind here and these huts would blow away within an hour. I cover my seeds with very fine layer of sand mixed with peat moss. The rows are set about 8 inches apart. Germ within a week, no shade. Thinned to one seedling every 3 inches. Don't remember having many weeds in the carrots but we started very early (march). By June have so many carrots I have to throw them away. Everything else in my garden was overrun with weeds but the carrot foliage blocks any light from helping weeds in the carrot patch.
@farmbeet25429 жыл бұрын
JeanLucLittleBear Wind can be a problem. My garden is sheltered from the prevailing winds, as every good garden should be (if possible). It is not uncommon for British gardeners of old to build a stone wall around their garden. It blocked winds and created microclimates (against the walls). You have found an idea that works for you and that is excellent. The old-timers used boards over the planted carrot rows to bring seed up quick (this is discussed in my garden book). That is the primary purpose of the shade discs... to bring up seed quick. Lifting the discs to provide a few days of extra sun protection is beside the point. You're right about carrots shading weeds once they get their foliage. Part 3 of this series shows the beds with mature foliage. Thanks for the comment.

Hello there!! I am here in Nepal and have planted the carrots just a day back. I learned about germinating them fast here in your video. Thanks!!! Could you please explain in detail about the shade discs and shade cloths for my use in carrots.
@herrickkimball6 жыл бұрын
The principle of covering just-planted seeds to get them to germinate faster has been known for a very long time. The shade discs and tricks-planting are a unique way of doing this. You could cover the seeds with boards or just about anything that will serve to keep the soil moist, so it doesn't crust over in the hot sun. The important thing to do is make sure the cover is removed (or lifted up) as soon as you see the first sign of a sprout emerging from the soil. I have a series of newer videos showing how I plant (and eventually harvest) 4-day-carrots in my Minibed garden.
