Superglue goes through a powerful rapid exothermic reaction when put on porous/fibrous natural materials. Can even start a fire with some superglue and cotton wool! That's what caused the smoke on your bark piece

You have a different definition of easy than I do. Sweet looking bases though.
@Miniac

I guess easy to me is defined by how long these took me. No detail was labored over, so the process was really fast!
@karlb6273

Miniac : The way I see it, almost all of the individual steps in this process were easy. I wouldn’t call these bases simple, quick or trivial, but neither did you. The difficult part is the aesthetics, really. That’s where I usually struggle. Furthermore, one obviously needs quite a bit of materials. Feel free to call the bases easy, though you might want to elaborate on what you mean (”It looks far more difficult than it actually is”). Watching your video, words like ”inspiring” and ”beautiful” come to mind. Thank you!

they may not turn out as well but certainly its only a limitation of imagination. even if you just add a fews extra bits. I wont a local painting contest best overall stormcast ranger(personally i hated the mini but was to lazy to cut it up as a dead guy which i originally intended)) with a sword in a rock from manic games crate, a skull a fews tufts of grass on crackle paint(first time i used crackle paint).

Maybe for the next base series showcase what you can do on models that are ALREADY glued to the basis. I personally don't buy those kits where you put the minis together, but rather already completed minis on basis, ready for priming

I second this request. As someone who often buys second hand models (and/or may have assembled a bunch of models before even thinking about basing them) something I can easily work in around mini feet would be greatly appreciated. I'm trying to work out a good way to do some kind of vehicle wreckage in snow type setting but I don't know what the hell I'm doing. Thanks for the quality video.

I'd like to see this and attaching minis to bases like in this video. Bases like these look nice, but I've always wondered how you attach the mini without screwing up the paint job and if it'd be more troublesome to attach the mini and then paint the base and all.

Hey Scott. Just wanted to say thank you. Thank you so much for taking the time and dedication for making videos like these. Due to family issues at the moment, I’ve tried to find a ways to keep myself active during harsh times. 16 and leaving school for college already is hard enough. Watching your videos make me laugh and smile in a way I don’t get as much anymore, currently guitar and warhammer are taking up 75% of my time. You don’t understand the effect you’ve had on me. Thank you.

My current favorite base design is what I'm using for Stormcast. I cover the base in styrene cobblestones, and add green stuff as dirt towards the edges with the occasional small rock or skull pressed or glued into it, then I drape green stuff vines over all the parts of things. Once things have set, I take some baking soda and glue it to the dirt piles. If you want, and have the room, you can make it multilevel with a sheet of cork covering part of it, and have both the top and bottom covered with cobblestones. It's detailed, and if I ever actually build an army, I'll totally cast 5-10 of them and make them in mass.

Something I highly recommend and use almost religiously are the Basius pads. They're large resin squares with the relief of some terrain, you just spritz it with water, glob some greenstuff onto the base, and press onto a random location then pull it off. They look fantastic, have a lot of variation, and are easy to supplement since it's greenstuff (they have a forest pad that I use and run the tires of vehicles over to get a sense of weight and mud).

Its amazing, I spend a lot of time on youtube watching miniature hobby and gaming videos and i just found your channel. I love your vids. Mainly they are super entertaining. The painting tips are a secondary bonus. My painting skills are most comparable to a 5 year old with a magic marker. Anyway keep up the great work and congratz on the new career

Vallejo Pigment Binder or MIG Pigment Fixer. Vallejo is a bit thinner than traditional matte mediums, but roughly the same thing. MIG, however; is what I use for all my weathering. No problems and it only slightly kills the dryness of the pigment. Best done in two layers to create a nice dry/ wet contrast.

Great video. It’s nice to see more varieties of basing ideas. I’m curious how to make movement and “active” weather effects on bases. That idea on making casts for en masse basing sounds great; I wonder roughly how much variety would be needed to make that en masse not look so much like copies as well. Kind of like how one blob or pattern block can get repeated in a camo pattern but it’s harder to pick out the repeats.

All four of these are awesome Scott!!! My personal favorite is the orange debris on the first scifi base - but that airbrush blood effect is a lot of fun too. And yeah, you put a LOT of superglue onto that bark. Biological materials have some of the same types of molecules as the active ingredient in superglue accelerator. That exothermic reaction of superglue polymerization is going to go really fast and raise the temperature of that bark ---> smoke!!! :-)
