Cassavette's Chinese Bookie is totally underrated. Ben Gazzara was having difficulty relating to his character Cosmo and Cassavettes put down the camera and said "Don't you get it? There are people out in this world who just want to take over and intervene and ruin your dreams" the mafia in the film represent Hollywood studios who always try to take control of an artist's work (especially Cassavettes) to commercialize it and make it more mainstream. John Cassavettes started to cry explaining this to Gazzara and Ben immediately understood Cosmo was Cassavettes.

I've been enamored by Hamaguchi since 2021 when he released both Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy and Drive My Car. I've gone out of my way to try and watch all of his narrative fiction features and he's definitely an amazing auteur director

Did you catch Wife of a Spy? It was a collaboration between him and Kiyoshi Kurosawa and another one of Kurosawa's apprentices.

Passion by Hamaguchi is truly one of the best films I’ve seen. Made me tear up not cuz the story is sad or anything but for its pure beauty!

To think that it was a student project makes it even more impressive. Granted, he still was able to get solid professional actors.

Killing of a Chinese Bookie and Written on the Wind are pretty underrated imo. Glad to see them recognized by such a great director!
@nl306411 ай бұрын
Maybe under-seen, but not underrated. They're perfectly well-respected by hardcore film buffs. All four of these picks have been included among the '1,001 Movies You Must See Before You Die.'
@BrianDePalmaII11 ай бұрын
@@nl3064 Kinda meant underrated in the sense of how they're looked at in their director's filmmography. Both Chinese and Husbands I think aren't often looked at with as high of regard as some of Cassavete's other features but I think they're perhaps better than them. Same with Written on the Wind, it's about on par with something like Sirk's All That Heaven Allows. Do agree though, probably more overlooked than underrated especially if you were to take this outside the film buff community.

Of all these Letterboxed vids, this is one of the best. All solid choices, even the ones I don't like are at least respectable. And Spirit of the Beehive is great; I watched it a few times. Fun fact: Spirit of the Beehive was supposedly one of Stanley Kubrick's fav's as well.

I wish English subtitles was better, his words are precisely chosen and these translations lost its nuances😢 At the end of this video he said “I think it’s a nice experience to devastate beautifully through watching these films” kinda thing…
