wow! Thats a wonderful and morally uplifting family tale. I think many mothers did the same when their teen daughters got pregnant. They would say they had a " late in life" pregnancy, and these were common as it was. Hide them away and come out with a baby , and hopefully the girl would not be shamed. It was dreadful how women were mistreated. No real contraception, and many times once they got pregnant they kept having baby after baby for 15 or 20 years. It really good to hear an happy ending to one of these stories.

So I may leave several comments but I'm on the first case right now of Miss Maggie... One question I have is, where were these "outraged" people that came out for her during the trial to give testimony of her good character PRIOR to get baby's death? Next question- where was her family during the trial and after? I'm sure That word got to them that she was arrested for the death of her baby boy. Also shame one that man for getting her pregnant and then abandoning her and her child!

@StacyL. "getting her pregnant and then abandoning her and her child!" WOMEN control sex. She chose that scumbag. It's unfortunate how things turned out, but as soon as the doctors said she was of sound mind before drowning her baby - she should have been tried accordingly (regardless of public outcry). If this was a man, he legit would have had to be suffering from psychosis to even attempt an insanity plea.

My great-grandfather was a foundling in the 1840s. This was when a baby was given up by a woman 'of previous good character' to be cared for by the foundling hospitals. If she were able, she could reclaim the baby at a later date, but otherwise the children were raised by the hospital, precisely for this reason.

@@lazyhomebody1356 it’s a good idea from our perspective. But we weren’t in her shoes at the time. I am not condoning her choices. What she did was horrible, and I would think, she spent the rest of her life with great guilt. I am only saying that in those days, there was no help for women. No welfare. No WIC services. No public housing. No child support. One had to have money to provide everything. She gave birth in a hotel room where she worked. That alone tells me she was not financially stable at all. Add to that the stigma of being an unwed mother, I think she was very desperate. Lots things happened to make her feel this way: the letter that never was answered (she thought she was abandoned by her own family), the guy that she was pregnant by made her show up to false address and disappeared without taking any responsibility, and no financial security. I wish she had never made the choices she did, including have sexual relations with the man that left her this way to deal with everything all alone. I feel that way about today’s women as well. People can’t be trusted, and it’s a tale as old as time, man gone, woman left to deal with it all. So while I don’t agree with her choices at all, I can see how she may have been dealing with postpartum depression/exhaustion, was all alone, hungry, and scared while trying to care for her baby, causing her to do what she did. Unfortunately, her baby paid the price of all the people in the story that didn’t make good choices, including the father of the child.

Why is everyone sorry for Maggie? Was she sexually assaulted? Did she try to give her baby to someone to care for him and get told no? Did her parents say they wouldn't help in any way? You don't have to kill an innocent baby to make your life decisions look better! She was pretty, and prostitution is better than murder...by quite a lot!!! Give your baby to someone who wants one. Someone always wants a baby. Prostitution isn't something I imagine she wanted, but it would feed her and the child. It's sad that maybe nearly the only choices she had, but they are much better than the one she made. That she passed out when she's sentenced to death after killing a baby says what the problem was... She was selfish.

Well, that would be the sensible thing to do. I certainly would have pretended to be a widow in that situation, if only to be able to enough food for myself and my child.

I agree with the verdicts in the first and third cases but am disappointed in the outcomes of all cases but the first. I am glad Maggie knew happiness for some time, enraged that Minnie got off scot-free and that Paul Aistein was ever let out and so sad for Martha's hard life and end. What a treat to hear four of your great works today. Thank you Brief Case!!

It was never proven that Minnie did anything wrong, besides being a high-priced hooker in everything but name. She went for the money and people do it every day. If her first husband kept it in his pants he wouldn't have died. Her second husband didn't drink himself to death in a few months, it took years before he married her. The third man was on a different continent! As for a woman killing her baby so she doesn't die, that's call selfishness and evil.

It’s crazy, nobody wanted to help that young woman and her baby, she was driven to desperation, subsequently all of society cared then about her baby and punishing her. What she’d done murdering her baby was wrong, but if anyone deserved mercy, she completely did.

That’s what I would have done! And @kayhathaway6956’s opinion that that would show a lack of integrity would be absolutely irrelevant - because I would want both my baby and I to LIVE. That’s what would matter, not self-destructive truthfulness. LIFE!

These are brilliant stories. Past times brought to life and the sad, tragic circumstances that still happen today, shows nothing changes in human nature. The lady that drowned her baby has eerie similarities to the many women who kill their kids under similar societal burdens in our "enlightened" times today. Thanks for very interesting, well researched and well told stories of the past that have profound meaning that impact human life today.❤

It’s the injustice for me from start to finish, especially in the first case. Poor Maggie was pitted into a society that would never accept her in any kind of way or capacity, and because of men and what they deemed as moral she was left to make choices for survival And never was prepared to deal with those consequences because she never thought she would have to because women didn’t need to know those things as they were told they wouldn’t it just makes me really sad and angry of course for the baby too but humans are animals and animals do kill their young if they know that their own survival is on the lineand I can see her reasoning but it’s just sad overall, I wish they were more things in place to help her or I wish she would’ve stayed at that home for the full two weeks but I could not imagine her psychological stability at that time

Did you miss the part where she killed her baby? Honestly, some women never accept responsibility for their actions, or expect responsibility when looking at the actions of other women. It's always men's fault, or the society's fault, or the devil made them do it. It's always "they needed help, and nobody helped them". What an insulting view of women! Women should be responsible, and capable of helping themselves, which in actuality the majority of us are.

I know. My heart breaks for Maggie and her baby, and I would have spat upon thd man who seduced and abandoned her. I do think she deserved prison time, but I am glad she wasn’t killed. So glad we now have laws to allow abandoned women to leave their newborns at police stations and hospital ERs if they are unable to provide for them.
