No it isn’t sad. They’re all bred for looks now because we don’t work them like they were intended for
@Raigoth
@Raigoth 11 ай бұрын
@@JohnnySack16 Thats WHY its sad. When you breed animals JUST for looks then you end up with issues like this dog has, or worse. Look at Pugs for example, or Dachshund's. Pugs have respiratory issues because they are bred simply for how smooshed their face is. Dachshund's have issues with their spines because they are bred just for how long they are. If you breed just for looks, you are breeding unhealthy dogs.

@@JohnnySack16Dogs are NOT cats. Cats are specifically bred for looks and purely for looks. I know this I had top bloodline cats in my life and they really are bred for looks even the show cats. Dogs are not bred for looks only. Also some breed association prohibits certain looks in certain breeds as these features are known to be health issues and the dog can be disqualified from a show for having these features.

What becomes so sadly problematic is that, while some American Kennel Club (AKC) standards, such as dogs' colors, do very much help assure dogs' health, other aspects of their breeding standards deeply hurt them. Ear and tail cropping, for instance, have been vehemently spoken out against by the American Veterinarian Medical Association (AVMA), the licensing board responsible for licensing veterinarians here in the US, as being incredibly painful and completely medically unnecessary for dogs, and yet the AKC has mandated both, despite the AVMA stepping forward and asking the AKC to please not require either, as they are both such cruel, medically unnecessary procedures. Pugs eyes are required by the AKC to bulge so badly, that it's common for their eyes to fall out of their skulls. Brachycephalic breeds, the ones whose noses are squished into their faces (French Bulldogs are an example of this), suffer such horrific breathing problems that it causes them to have incredible breathing problems for the entirety of their lives. Yet all of this and more is required by the AKC purely for the sake of aesthetics, at great expense to the dogs' health. The AKC sadly has a longstanding history of placing aesthetics before canine health, and then allowing health to be considered only when it does not get in the way of aesthetics, when, for the sake of the dogs, it should be the other way around: health should come first, and aesthetics should come into play only when they will not compromise dogs' health. I really wish that, rather than simply assuming that the AKC always has dogs' best interests at heart when it comes to breeding, people would instead look to veterinarians first and foremost when it comes to dogs' health, rather than simply assume that the AKC always follows what vets have stated is best for the dogs. The sad reality is that the AKC has a longstanding history of ignoring what vets have had to say about what's best for our dogs when it comes to their having the long, healthy lives that they deserve.

@@crow_feather Ethical cropping and docking have no negative effects towards the dog and are part of the standard because they were/are needed in that breeds line of work. Have you ever dealt with a corso with hematomas in his ear from shaking them too much? Or a Doberman with happy tail?

@@leifbug2559 In Europe we have had happily tailed Dobermanns since 2001. There may be dogs that are actually working, or particular individuals who may benefit in some way from cutting off tails or ears, but in general it is not needed. Cropping and docking has been forbidden in the Netherlands sinds 2001 for all breeds. We consider all docking and cropping unethical unless for an individual dog for medical reasons.

@@leifbug2559 The entire licensing board of veterinarians responsible for licensing vets in the US says you're wrong, and that it absolutely has painful and highly adverse effects on dogs. My friend's daughter is a vet, and she's also said that both procedures have ceased being taught in veterinary schools for exactly these reasons. Are you actually claiming that you know more about what's good for dogs than licensed veterinarians? If you're dealing with happy tail, then take responsibility for your dog, and train him not to wag his tail so hard, rather than chop off an entire limb in what licensed vets have deemed a painful, unethical procedure, simply because you don't want to be responsible enough to train him!

Breed standards in general encourage ill-bred dogs. The loose skin on Neopolitans and other mastiffs and the myths surrounding them. The squatted nature of many bulldog breeds. Snub noses and bulging eyes from pugs and other terriers. All human induced suffering by people who care more about some ugly, arbitrary standard rather then what's good for the animal.

As someone who’s had many Newfoundlands it’s heartbreaking to hear about the poor breeding. I’m still going to hope that Mugsy is well loved and cared for in the best way possible. I have rescued two newfs because of the lack of care that was given to them. I know these times are hard on people and with the prices of food for humans and dog food and can’t forget vet bills. I would help any newf at anytime and anywhere. Thank you for giving this angel a new well deserved new look!

Thank you for putting health before aesthetics. ❤❤❤ It's a bummer to shave a gorgeous coat but it's not *sad* if the doggo is happier & healthier. We've hit the danger zone with our society's aesthetic obsession & it seems to no longer be commonsense.
@stellangios
@stellangios Жыл бұрын
It's not "aesthetics" to not want to shave a double. They're an important part of the dog--keeping them cool in the summer, warm in the winter. Keeping the sun and rain off their skin. Keeping them unshaved (ideally) keeps the coat growing in correctly. It is sad, esp b/c it's clear this dog was bred out of a stupid desire to make a "different" color rather than breed a good, functional Newfoundland. The owners were right to *try* to keep the coat even though it was poor, but it was beyond saving and now the dog will probably need extra care and protection from the elements.

Hi Vanessa! Your comment about the priority of your business is to keep the dog safe, really resonated with me. I am a retired nuclear engineer from the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station. Our working philosophy was that we ran the plant to be safe. Electricity was only made if all safety criteria were met first, last and always. I think I can similarly summarize your working philosophy is that you run your grooming business for the dogs to be safe, grooming happening only if all safety criteria are met first, last and always! 🙂👍👍

Our Newf, Molly, had her coat raked out three or four times a year. The four or five hours I spent grooming Molly were gentle, fun times. We talked alot, and it was time well spent. For the last five of her years, I shaved off her coat at the beginning of June - our hot time in Alberta. She appreciated the coolness, and didn't sink or suffer when she went swimming. Her coat grew back by October, and by then it needed to be raked out and she given an nice bath. If it weren't for the coat, I'd get another Newf in a heart beat. That the owners of this Newf let his coat get so wretchedly matted speaks to a degree of laziness bordering on neglect. Step up and look after your dog, he can't brush out his coat by himself. Either that or give him to a family that will give him proper love and attention.

I’m hopeful it will grow back in. I see no reason why it wouldn’t. Part of owning a Newfoundland is handling the plethora of matted hair/fur issues that arise, regardless of how well or how often they are groomed. Ours have all had to be partially or fully shaved at one time or another and they are well cared for. It happens. All has grown back in. All are AKC registered except for one who was a rescue.

most people just dont care about their animals. You notice that the most with dog claws, if you can hear a dog tap, the dog is severely neglected. It literally means the dog is forced to stay home all day and not get the exercise it needs. Most people just get dogs as 'companions' without thinking about how the animal feels. This dog was given back to the owners to continue their severe abuse. Considering the amount they were willing to pay to send the dog there, you know they have tbe finances to get it groomed. they just do not care

@doo1819 The way that dogs are bred for shit that makes them worse, short noses, short legs, elongated or curved backs, breeders should not exist. It's sick. The fact this woman not only pushes pure bred dogs over shelter dogs, gives back obviously severely abused dogs, but also lied about not getting paid doe any of this when prior to her view count going up, she used to call dogs her 'clients' is sick.
