26:45 reflection decay time can ruin how clearly you hear sounds from the movie mix. This is why DSP and acoustic room treatments really matter, no matter how expensive your gear.

You know what the issue is with your squiggly peaks-and-troughs measurement of your speaker in the room, is that you've measured just ONE tiny spot in the room. Our ears are about 17 cm apart and ususally not perfectly still, so you should do at least 2 measurements and average them. But what I like to do is play back white noise and then slowly move tightly around the listening position to let an average response fill up over time. Downside it has to be quiet and have to be careful about handling noise (I hang it from my hand with a rubber band). But it really gives a good idea of what the speaker actually does in the room around the listening position. You could also do multiple sweeps and move the mic on a stand in between and average those of course. Another thing you could do is create 4 impulse responses (one foor each speaker to each ear) with a ORTF mic setup and load those into SIR plugin to get a true stereo response on headphones. Left speaker to both mics, right speaker to both mics. And then maybe share your impulse responses so we can listen to our own music through all those speaker to compare them 😇

How do you do that decay measurement? Is it a REW function? My situation is very similar to his example.
what is the ear phone to produce pink noise?where can I get it? thanks!

imo this is very interesting. ive know many years now about speaker positioning, room treatments etc are extremely important. To me if you dont do either, you aint getting the most out of any speaker / system.

Anthony, I never thought of bringing my furniture mover in the house to find the best place for my sub. However, after reading curves, I just might… if the interior designer in me can figure out the options :)

Hey, I know I’m a year late to the party, but if anyone knowledgeable on the subject stumbles over this question, I’m yet to find many straight forward answers… I’m 90% def in my right ear… I’m still treating my room. Curious if my listening position and speaker placement should be the same as a normal hearing person. It appears that my things should be better with the equilateral triangle between me and the speakers should come to a point right in front of my ears vs the standard right behind the ears. This would, in theory, narrow the sound field to resemble a mono speaker a little more. I presume this would be beneficial because it’s hard for me to hear where sounds are coming from, but this gives me a hint of the stereo field. Does this make any sense?

Definitely makes for an interesting topic seeing how, some of us engineers haven’t properly protected their hearing early on in our journey. I’m curious to learn more on this matter as well.

Joe N Tell mentioned at 37:16 that Dirac likes to put pair of speakers together. Please note that this just to apply same EQ filters. This doesn't drive Delays. Each speaker will have its own delays regardless of how you group them. I think the reason Dirac groups L/R together is because they for the most part play together and therefore should sound as similar as possible. Now if you have different speakers for your L/R then splitting them out is a good idea but if you have same speaker make/model for L/R and are placed equidistant from Center, you should group them and EQ them together. I wonder what's the reason Joe N Tell splits them apart?

Joe here. Each speaker may have its own related room related resonances that I prefer to address individually.

I do L/C/R as a group and LS/RS as a group. Maybe worth a try EQing each individually

So when I put the Harmon +10dB bass in Dirac Live, that removes the Room EQ that needs to be set custom per speaker?

The food metaphor was great but Anthony left out one of the most important factors (and easiest to remedy): temperament. Don’t judge music HANGRY. Get a bite to eat and repeat.
