Recently got to set up my first dual-sub system in my own space, and seeing DIRAC measurements where I basically got between 12 and 20 dB, depending on the measurement position, for free at 20 Hz just from another sub and better placement is just exhilarating in a geeky way. My only issue is I don't have all this testing equipment to even know if my sound is good. I can experiment and move stuff around, listen to the same track over and over, while sitting in different places in the room. That takes tons of time, but that's what I have had to do, and my sound is pretty good these days. I was running only one dedicated sub, and after adding a second sub to a different location in the room, oh wow. It improved the bass response in almost every seat. REally cool stuff guys!!!

I pointed a laser distance meter around from my listening position.. pointed it to front/side/ceiling and divide with the corresponding L W H room dimension. To avoid the nulls of 1st and 2nd order standing wave you'd want to keep a margin to factors of .25, .5, .75.

That is true. Here in Spain we build with concrete and bricks and the bass problem is actually worst because there is very few energy absorption by the walls.

Bass management is important. I have the frequency response down pretty well in my room, basically flat from 12Hz to 80Hz but somehow it isn't very "exciting". If I use just one Sub (I have two, placed diagonally) then I get more vibrations in my couch and more tactile bass, but of course less linearity. Seems to be a "compromise" situation.

A solution could be floor standers with active subwoofers at the front and 2 xSVS 3000 micros in the rear corners or sides, total of 4 active subwoofers. Might keep the cost down and achieve the goal.

After getting REW running on my old laptop computer and installing an adapter to go from USB to HDMI I could use it to run sweeps on my AVR. I spent 8 hours yesterday chasing "flatness" in the bass region only to finally figure out it is the room and quite possibly the subwoofer itself that cannot be EQ'd out. I moved the sub to many locations and added in a second sub I have, which helped a little, but it still is not running correctly, in my opinion. Dang it! The measurement and correction task is like trying to escape from a house of mirrors!

If you see this Anthony, I would love to know you're opinion as to if it would be possible to get into acoustic engineering for loudspeakers with a mechanical engineering degree as it was for you with electrical engineering. Gene - you guys are killing it with the room acoustics series. Curious to hear what Anthony's got for this upcoming week regarding the "mo subs, mo betta" approach to taming base in acoustically small rooms. My room is TINY - 10' X 12' X 9' and it's been maddening experimenting and measuring with speaker/listener placement. I'm using prosumer studio monitors in a 2-ch setup that I initially placed out into the room where traditional HiFi speakers always measured best. Unsatisfied with the dips I was getting around 100Hz and searching for solutions I found some video by Carl Tatz (curious if Anthony knows him) who suggested this dip is common in most rooms with stand-mounted speakers. He recommended setting them up much close to the front wall and sure enough when I did and remeasured the dip was gone with no other impact elsewhere in the bass - and from rear-ported speakers no less! Is there a case to be made in tiny rooms that the speakers should be right up against the front wall to help with speaker boundary issues? Also curious what Anthony thinks about sizing speakers to rooms and whether or not that's even really a thing.

Gene and friends I have a question about subwoofer integrating with the mains. I ran a few different freq 60-120hz in Audacity and adjusted my subwoofer phase until it sounded best, but the position for sounding best differed for some of the frequencies. So I assume part of it is peak/null standing waves... I watch all of your videos usually multiple times and I am either forgetting where you mention how to do this, or I haven't seen it somehow. Gene and Anthony, I'm fighting a particular trade-off and am wondering if this is a real trade off or if there is a way around it. I did an A/B of letting Audyssey calibrate both of my 2 subs independently vs. me manually level matching and adjusting the subs' delays until I got as smooth of an FR from the subs as I could, then used a Y splitter to make Audyssey think they were one. Letting SubEQ HT work on the subs independently seems to give me a much better stereo image with low frequency content like kick drums (I assume because it's good at phase aligning the subs), but my FR curve is terrible (massive dip 30-50hz). When I level-match and set delays myself, then Y-split the subs to make Audyssey treat them as a single sub, I get much better FR, but the stereo image doesn't sound as locked for low frequency content (higher frequency imaging is fine). Is this a real problem and what can I do to solve it?

Good one guys, I've been meaning to ask Anthony Grimani a question but I never know when to ask it. But I feel like nows a good moment. What about a pentagon or heptagon shaped room? I've got enough towers that go to 35hz to have one in each corner of a heptagon, but would the sidewall be better than the corner? What kind of affects would you predict in having wider/narrower angles of a pengtagon vs those of a heptagon. I'm considering construction based in solid concrete, or a heptagon room made of breeze blocks, inside another larger rectangular room of timber frame construction with favorable acoustic ratios. Open to all suggestions. Although I'm leaning towards a barn full of chickens lol My specific use case doesn't need to be addressed, but I would really love to hear some discussion of room geometry in rooms that don't have any parallel sides such as a pentagon or heptagon. I think debating the merits of speaker placement in corner or on the side would very interesting. I guess there should also be a door and a screen in there too ;P just incase you get lonely, and want to let the chickens in. Thanks :)

I noticed my midbass/bass was sorely lacking, so here is a tip for the layperson. Download Audacity, create 40hz, 50hz, 60hz, 70hz etc test them one at a time, but shift the output between left, both and right speakers. I noticed that anywhere I can put the speakers for my main listening position, I am in a null.

I know this is off topic for this particular video, but part of the title triggered a dilemma I have, maybe it could be a worthwhile point to hit in the future for a few others as well with similar limitations, the plot will slightly thicken a few times: I have a pretty small studio set up in my basement (9'7"x11'5"), it's pretty packed with everything that needs to go in this room, not a lot of room to keep unhingable basstrap panels when I'm not mixing, or to move just to grab something off the ceiling-to-floor built-in shelving that each jut out a foot from the original 9'7" dimension on each side of the room. The left side wall shelf unit is 6'8" wide up against the front wall, but then the wall sticks out another 8" into the room space until it hits the back left corner. The right side shelving is 5'2" wide, and here's what I think might be my main concern: after the shelves on the right side of the wall, the remaining length of the wall is cut into to make room for a kinda triangular shaped walk-in closet with big sliding mirrored doors (that I've turned inside-out) that make up the rest of that wall, causing a wide angle for my back right corner of the room, it's at an angle to where the back wall is only 4'11". That back wall is the 30" door, some trim, and the 20" built-in shelf that goes from the floor to 1'1" from the ceiling. There's a 7'x17" section along the left front corner side of my seating position on the ceiling that drops down 10" for something. My question is with such an irregular shape to my room that has a built-in lopsided nature to it, how do I acoustically treat my room? My back left corned has a door jammed up against it, my back right corner has a wide angle with a sliding closet door up against one side, and a built-in shelf up against the other (which has all my girl's and my CDs which makes the whole shelf a plastic jewelcase reflection surface I assume I should cover with a detachable panel). My front two corners have shelves attached to each side, the ceiling is lopsided on the left and the top shelf on the right actually sticks out another 5.5" kinda messing up being able to symmetrically hang that side's panel. The first reflection points are occupied with shelfspace, I'm having a really hard time figuring out how to make a balanced mixing environment, it's stressing me out :P do I move my desk and speakers ever so slightly to one side to compensate for a huge angled set of closet doors on one side? I mean at least the only window in this room was boarded up and is inside the walk-in closet before it was a closet, haha, so the front wall is just solid drywall and I have no window surfaces to worry about, but I'm still stumped on how to address all the physical oddities. Am I over-thinking? Is it easier than I've been wondering about for the last idk how long? Sorry for the crazy long question, but I hope I haven't lost you in tediousness :/ if so, you're obviously not obligated to consult my hyper-specific detailed inquiry, I'd understand :P either way, I appreciate you! Today I learned that turning the subwoofer knob to the LFE setting is not always the best option. It really limits your subwoofer. Interesting.

It bypasses the internal crossover of the sub which is recommended if you're using bass management of your AVR.

About 90% of folks planning a home theater setup can ignore and in fact dismiss most of what's said in this video. All these graphs that these guys and other YT influencers are always showing you to represent how "bad" your bass sounds is mostly nonsense. Because it just doesn't translate to significantly noticeable differences in real world listening. You look at all those sound measurement graphs and say to yourself, "Oh my Gad, my bass is going to sound terrible!!" Listen, go out and spend a little extra on a great pair of main speakers. Then go out and spend a little extra on a high end SEALED sub with a high quality amp of at least 300 watts (but this would depend on your room size obviously). Set your AVR's x'over to usually 80, but play around and experiment, could be 70, could be 90. Then make sure speaker distances are set in your AVR, as well as the subs phase (usually zero degrees, but again, experiment). Next, using a $25 SPL meter, or heck even a phone app, level all your speakers. Then (and this is important) gradually give your brand new sub a proper break in routine over a set period of time to allow it to sound it's best. Next and final step - enjoy awesome sound! And forget the graphs!!!

Bass Matters... tell that to Disney and some other studios who are more and more likely to neuter the low bass frequencies to appease the sound bar and TV speaker crowd. Disney used to have some of the best audio mixes from their Renaissance Era to about just before "The Age of Ultron." TAoU is actually a good sign post for when their soundtracks started becoming downright terrible.

I can not get rid of this null. I have 2 subs and have put them EVERYWHERE. I cross them at 90 at have 20db null from 50-70hz. I've moved them all over the place, and moved my seating back and forth by a couple feet. No combination seems to do it for me. I can't afford more than 2 subs at the moment. I don't have a minidsp. But I have 2 sub-outs. The only thing a minidsp is going to do is help eq my subs better to my mains. That's the only thing it will make easier. I've played with distance. But I like to set the distance at the right place to be in phase with the mains. If I use it to treat the null it could sound horrible. There's really no eq solution for this, as they just talked about for an hour lol

@@Cblan1224 A variable phase adjustment is the key, it's either a dial knob on the back of the sub or it's a time delay adjustment ( milliseconds ) in software of a dsp. Assuming you've already found the optimal positions for your speakers and listening seat ( where you get smoothest response ), And assuming that you have a rectangular room with the subs placed in their most optimal positions possible,..e.g,..( The opposite corners diagonally works for me ). You should first integrate the sub closest to the main speakers so that it's at the correct gain level, crossover point and phase so that it's in phase with the mains. Then adjust the phase/delay on the second sub until it fixes the nulls - Keep in mind that you may have to adjust the gain level and lower the crossover point on this second sub as there could be some interference if you set it to the same as the first sub. Yes but that graph is going to be up and down like that because of the DB output at 100db..? is way too high for the size of room like that, if you have an output or 50db the waveform is going to be a lot flatter response and you won't get the troughs so much that's my logic and I'm sticking to it lol You have to be careful of building sickness at 1 Hz has to be cancelled out didn't mention this and body frequency is not good can make you ill You should take 75mg of aspirin daily before your vaccine and K2 carry this on for a month especially with the Pfizer vaccine and AstraZeneca and probably the others as well Some studies are showing ventricle clogging and possibly pulmonary embolism

Hi Gene That setup won't give you bass presence, clarity, micro dynamics or bass transparency. That setup is so dated . Bass trapps and defusers are also so dated. We all want to live in decorative cosy living rooms. Anthony is all talking about dated techniques. When the industry talks about square rooms which are a major problem ,then I just laugh. That's a huge myth. Rather say that, so called acoustic experts don't know what they doing. There are new developments on the horizon in acoustic techniques and speaker placements . Speaker placements has always been discussed online with giving people 100 odd numbers of variables. Speaker positioning can be calculated as a definite position today already with no variables. There are 3 definite points in every room that give a perfect acoustic interface between the room, listener and speakers. The technology is already working and available out there. Dear Mr. Maichatz, have you thought that you are talking on behalf of other people without knowing what other people actually prefer. For instance I am a 19 year old and think that a dedicated room with bass traps and diffusers look awesome and I think many people will agree with me as some will agree with you. There are always 2 or more sides to something. If you accidentally walked past Don in the street his appearance would probably make you you think he's a tattoo artist, a rock band drummer, a builder or along those lines. But a wise old man or woman would say looks can be deceiving. Just because Don has a different appearance and persona from the typical audio geek. Doesn't mean he doesn't have a wealth of knowledge. Being an installer of speakers, subwoofers etc for many many years gives him first hand knowledge that most people simply don't have. If you do a job long enough you usually improve, learn from mistakes made earlier in your career. I don't think a perfectionist like Gene would have got Don to do installations in his house if Don wasn't one of the best installers around. Having a few different perspectives keeps also things real. Plus he's a colourful character So I vote to keep Don in these videos. 😁
