Four Unlikely DC Universe Classics Oddities ~Vigilante, Martian Manhunter, Kamandi, OMAC

Whether or not you were a fan of Mattel's DC Universe Classics action figure line or not there is one thing I'm sure we can all agree on: they sure made a heck of a lot of characters. A listers. B listers. and Even C, D, and E listers. Big and small they made'em all! OK, well not all of them but they sure did give us more obscure characters than even DC Direct did back in the day. Here we will take a look at just 4 of the oddities Mattel unexpectedly chose to add to their DC Universe Classics collection.

I realize this is an old video about old figures, but man do I love these DC Universe Classics. I understand the focus now is useful articulation, but I'll take figures like this every day. They look like they are straight off the comic page. If I found that Vigilante figure on the pegs right now at 18$ I wouldn't hesitate to take it home. For me it's less about how many poses I can get a figure into and more about the artistic merit and how well that is conveyed to my collecting eye. If I can translate in my mind what the creators are conveying, be they sculptors, painters, tailors, etc, then I am sold. It is for this very reason I am regularly excited when I find new Batman Missions figures. I just picked up a new Mr Freeze from that line and he is highly detailed and looks fantastic. One of my favorite Harley Quinn figures is a Mission, the Robin is just as good as the current Multiverse Red Robin and I honestly think the Black Manta, although technically not of the Missions line, is better than the MV Black Manta. The weapons are much better for sure. The drawbacks are the articulation and the scale. Anyway, I didn't mean to ramble on so long. Vigilante is awesome!!! He was always one of my favorite characters in the 80’s. I still have all the issues. How can you say it wasn’t popular? It lasted 50 freaking issues!!!!!! Series today would kill to last that long. He has also appeared in the CW shows and it’s rumored he will be in the second Suicide Squad movie. Vigilante forever!!!!

That's what made the DCUC such a great line to collect, the diversity of it. It was a sad day indeed when it ended.

I just started a shelf devoted to Jack Kirby. My first three DC characters are Orion, Mister Miracle, and OMAC since he's such an fantastic oddity

Yes, Joe Simon and Jack Kirby created the Cap but OMAC is kind of a re-imagined version of Captain America in the future that Marvel never let him do. DC gave him licence to do it during the time close to the end of his contractual obligations. I realize original wording may be a little incomplete.

I love this version of vigilante. I learned about most of the Kirby characters in brave and the bold. Vigilante is the only one that I still need of the four. He commands big bucks because of the bag even though it has been replaced with newer releases at a more affordable price.

I wonder if the new essentials line for DC does well like marvel legends that one day they will go this deep, great video I always learn something new from one of your Vids, you should think about doing "A history of...." (Heroes?) I think that would be super interesting and I know this is one of your older videos but I really enjoyed it and I'm really enjoying digging into your library, awesome work dude keep smashing it!

Thanks man! The “history of...” thing is absolutely on the table! I’ve just got so much product to wade through that it ends up getting pushed back. Those bigger vids are typically a 2 to 4 day turn around so they just suck up my time. They are definitely something I’m aiming to pursue.

My favourite DC run...tough question. I don’t really have one. I’d have to say a Jim Lee style Supes from Superman for Tomorrow, Hush, and All Star Batman and Robin was pretty high on my list. I had to custom a figure for it though.

DC recently has not used OMAC well. futures end and being used against the bat family at the end of Tynions IV detective run (I love the story for ‘Tec it is just the idea of OMAC was changed)

I respect them for taking some chances, even if they didn't pay off. Perhaps some of these may have been better off in two packs with more popular characters.

I've been working my way through your back catalogue recently due to the lack of new stuff for you to cover and I was wondering, would you consider doing with DCUC what you did with the Kenner Superman and Total Justice figs and do a retrospective on each wave? I'd watch the crap outta that.

Omac is GREAT I wish it didn't end mid story, this figure does not live up fu the character for me but it grew on me. And the modern omacs .....-_-

I never saw a Vigilante, but I have the other 3. I have Kamandi in a team I made up called the Chronoknights made up of figures from the past and future that don't go anywhere else. Where else was I going to put Sgt. Rock and Blackhawk for example? Unfortunately for Omac and Jemm, they ended up on villain teams. I have wayyy more heroes than villains. When the new evil Omacs showed up the original ended up being transferred to the Earth 2 Injustice Society, while Jemm, a villain on the new Supergirl show, is now in the Legion of Doom.

do bi It’s true. OMAC is filled with ideas Jack Kirby tossed (indispensably of Joe Simon) around for a Captain America set in the future but Marvel wouldn’t let him do it. So yeah I know the wording is strange I suppose but, in a way OMAC is Kirby’s version The Cap. I wonder what would have come of the idea had he not just used it to fill a DC quota?

The face on the Kamandi figure is not young enough. He looks like a full adult, not a good look for "the last boy on Earth!"

Man I love the dcuc line but they just made too many figures of characters that nobody new like I've gone to a wal mart and they still have a whole wave of nobody characters great review though

I only was able to get Kamandi and Omac. Kamandi is on display in my made up Chronoknights team of heroes from the past and future, Omac I actually changed from hero to villain and put in my Earth 2 Injustice Society because the modern one is a villain in my Earth 1 Legion of Doom, and I need more villains. Both DC and Marvel have more villains than heroes. Marvel is better at putting out villains. Unfortunately, after Superman and Batman, villains thin out pretty quick on DC. Wonder Woman only has 3 good villains, Aquaman only two, Green Lantern only a few. Flash has a Rogues gallery, but so far I only Captains Cold and Boomerang, Heat Wave (if you don't put him in a Legends), and Zoom. Doesn't look good if the heroes have the numbers advantage and even with 20 years of collecting that's still the case unfortunately.
