If cutting down Chrome's appetite is a big concern (like if you're on a weak computer, 4GB RAM, etc.) you can also try the Chrome extension, The Great Suspender. Chrome actually already suspends tabs but sometimes it might not be as powerful as it should, so this extension solves that by putting the power into your hands.

Tab suspender such as the The Great Suspender, reduces Chrome's memory and GPU usage by suspending tabs that are not used.

I know this is an older thread, but I just wanted to say that I've been having problems with Chrome causing my fans to run almost constantly and slowing my (desktop) down considerably. After trying all the fixes recommended here and on other numerous websites, I finally did a reset of Chrome (which I had been hesitant to do as I was afraid I'd lose bookmarks, etc), and guess what? That totally fixed the issue. I simply had to enable my extensions and a few other simple tweaks. This worked for me; I hope it works for someone else!

5 - 10% improvement when using other browsers means Chrome isn't the culprit. The websites you are browsing are. Especially Facebook, a single tab can easily memory leak to over 3GB. And no, Chrome does not start a new process for every new tab. Chrome combines tabs under the same domain to a single process to save resources, because a lot of the data is shared. This has just wasted 4 minutes of my life, without any mention of session management and real settings that suspend tabs.

Not sure why Google Meet is de-compressing each video stream separately; obviously it's more optimal to have the server encode all of them together as one video to then send to the client. And before someone says latency, if it can be done in milliseconds for cloud gaming, then it can be done here.

The new Edge is basically crome with better performance ,a built in ad blocker and privacy , and you can install sites as apps . I now use it everywhere .
@NJ-wb1cz
@NJ-wb1cz 4 жыл бұрын
Okay, real tips are: 1. Install uBlock origin extension and turn on filters removing ads, social media buttons and tracking - they eat your ram and cpu the most. This is THE most important step. You can turn it off per-site if you wish. 2. Add --process-per-site parameter to the chrome shortcut you use to launch it (google for details). It makes all the 50 tabs of, say, reddit use common ram pool instead of occupying individual pools and saves a LOT of RAM if you have lots of similar tabs open, it can easily save you gigabytes of ram. You will see the effect in chrome task manager (as shown in this video), similar tabs will have just one ram number for all of them. BUT, if you add --process-per-site and one tab of the site starts lagging due to some misbehaving ads - all tabs of this site will start to lag. That's why uBlock is essential in this case.

Use Opera, or Firefox, or Epic, or Brave... And unless you have to, avoid using Google; use instead Duckduckgo. In fact you should use different browsers for each activity you do online: Personal, Finance, Work. Don't forget to download Sandboxie and make sure you create different sandboxes and delete those sandboxes regularly... Be smart. Opera will not run in Sanboxie, but has a built in VPN. Epic also has a built in proxy.

But a simple person doesn't understand what you are saying. Chrome just sounds like easy and clean, Fast and reliable. We are living in 2020 where people only seems to pick for their easy use. They don't go into technical information. How Clean my chrome is! More over, the style of how chrome shows any result, is satisfying where as others ( ahem ) have boxy and sharp impacts which really don't suit for the first impression. Rest there are opinions which others cannot deny!

Chrome supports Adblock Plus, but Edge does not, and not seeing ads on KZbin makes the biggest difference, so I use Chrome. Besides, Chrome uses only marginally more RAM than other browsers. You can add RAM to solve RAM shortage; I have 8 GB of RAM, 4 GB more than what it started with. BTW, my Firefox doesn't load pictures; does anyone know how to fix that?
