CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Charles (Hugh Grant) flubs his words while nervously trying to express his love for Carrie (Andie MacDowell).
FILM DESCRIPTION:
This acclaimed British comedy centers on the intermittent romance between a charming (if slightly bumbling) Englishman and a beautiful American woman, who seem to always run into each other at weddings. Indeed, it is at the first of the title's four weddings that Charles (Hugh Grant) and Carrie (Andie McDowell) meet, enjoying a brief but fleeting connection. The spark is rekindled several months later, when they unexpectedly meet at another wedding. Unfortunately, however, Carrie has become engaged to another, a fact that complicates matters for them both. The story may seem simple, but the film is elevated by screenwriter Richard Curtis' ear for witty dialogue and a colorful supporting cast. Director Mike Newell's sympathetic attention to character keeps the proceedings believable, and prevents the film's more serious moments from seeming mawkish. These elements, along with Grant's star-making performance as Charles, helped the film achieve unexpected international success, including an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture.
CREDITS:

Cast: Hugh Grant, Andie MacDowell
Director: Mike Newell

The funny thing is this would never happen to Hugh in real life, being the awkward guy who doesn't dress well. He's super posh, charismatic, and good looking. How was he able to draw inspiration for this scene

Funnily enough, Richard Curtis (the writer) didn't want Hugh Grant for this role because he thought he was too good looking and cool for the character. Of course the character is supposed to be a bit awkward and unlucky in love etc. and he thought Hugh wasn't a good fit. Anyway, they gave him the part, obviously.

I have no idea how many times I've seen this particular video. How difficult is to express his innermost, secret feelings in front of someone he loves ? Hugh Grant was an excellent choice, so British, reserved and the best actor for this role. I memorised every lines 🥰 Utterly romantic anglo version of Hugh Grant here 🩷

I'm a Richard Curtis fanboy, but I still don't understand why he made Carrie so unlikable. It's hard to believe Charles would want to be in the same room as her, let alone fall in love with her.

@@animaljustice7774 - By writing her so poorly. She's shallow, selfish and careless with other people. She was in love with Charles by the time she married Hamish - so why did she? And to show up at Charles' wedding was beyond callous. Maybe her motivations weren't malicious, but we'll never know because she wasn't given any depth.

@@Redundant_underscore no I don’t see her as shallow. And it’s possible she was invited to Charles’s wedding. Other than that may be perhaps her character could be written better? I’m not sure.

The outcome of the scene pivots on the difference between romance and commitment. Cary heard what he said. It was romantic. But Cary is more practical than that. She wants a commitment. So, she asks him, what did he say exactly? If Charles had committed to what he said at this moment, the movie ends happily ever after here. But he's not ready to make that commitment. He has more to learn. ...There is a similar pattern in Austen's Pride and Prejudice. The 2005 movie highlights the pattern by clustering the events around the two avowals of love. The first one is unsuccessful because Darcy has not committed to the right things. He loves Elizabeth in spite of his better judgement. By the second one, he has made amends. Curiously, rain also figures in both movies, 2005 Pride and Prejudice and 1994 Four Weddings. Its' raining when Elizabeth rejects Darcy. It's raining when Cary agrees "not to marry" Charles.

@@RideAcrossTheRiver Why? She never ever treated him well. Ever. She knew he liked her, married another man, made fun of Charlie at her wedding and never apologized for it and once the marriage worked out, she of course came running back. And how much she loved hearing Charlie confess his love to her without giving it back.
