Every time I see this movie I look forward to the scene with the three little girls asking for Christmas carols. It reminds me of something that took place back in the early 1980's. There was an elementary school in the US where the teacher became aware that many of her young students were terrified about the possibility of a nuclear war. She came up with a novel solution to try and help her students. She had everyone in the class write two letters concerning their fears. One was addressed to Ronald Regan and the other to Yuri Andropov, then the leader of Soviet Russia. The letters were mailed out and the class awaited a response. Soon letters came back from Regan. They were form letters and with the exception of who they were addressed to they were identical. Andropov's replies took more time due to logistics but eventually they did arrive. A lot of people who knew about this were amazed that he would write back. They were even more amazed when it became known that Andropov had taken the time to write each individual in the class personally and that no two letters were alike. Think about that. The President had no time for these youngsters and probably had one of his staff compose his response while Andropov, leader of America's biggest enemy at that time, had the heart to write 30 or so children so they would no longer be afraid. That's leadership. This scene always reminds me of that when he agrees to sing carols to those three little girls.........
