Excellent analysis, as a portuguese fan who knows this very well. Only one thing I want to mention, Sporting is not a team that wants possession AT ALL. The reason they have those numbers is because all three big teams in Portugal have them, whether they want it or not. 90% of the teams in Portugal play "park-the-bus" football and completely give the ball up when facing the big three. Sporting has possession because the other teams don't want anything to do with the ball when playing them.

More like every time these smaller teams lose possesion, they concede to parking the bus. Which leads to a game of an endless loop of one of the big 3 (even often times Braga) attacking all game, and the smaller team trying to play off of counters. Which is usually a method that fails them in the end. I know that these teams are technically inferior, but they play with too much fear. Their usually reasonably organized on the defensive end, but put next to nothing on attack

AHH! Thank you for the Anthony name drop at the end. If that man's going to make a come back, it's 100% at wing back. His defensive game for a winger goes far too unnoticed amongst our fans. He may have a moan about it, but wouldn't be surprised if he makes himself a starter over the coming months. Love him or hate him, the man has an engine and is a fucking terrier for oppositions when he wants to be.

I swear you're spot on. Dalot or Mazar and Anthony on opposite sides is cold. Anthony would be a killer wing back, and I think Amorim would be able to convince him to take the challenge on. He knows this is his last season to prove his use at man utd. So I think he'll just be eager to get in the side any way possible. Because he must have hated sitting on the bench all this season. Not even 1 start

I disagree. Who in the squad is “not listening”. Almost the whole team from Oles era are now gone and the few players who are (Shaw,Rashy,Bruno etc.) are very professional and do work very hard. The manager is the issue imo. The only good one we’ve had was Jose and he had success was just forced out early

It'll be a shame if Manchester United, be that referring to whom it may, don't realize that a faulty manager, which Ten Hag was by all accounts, is only half of the issue. A "losing mentality" is paramount throughout the squad, and it's severe enough that it's practically visible on the pitch.

That's why the gaffer has to be able to make it clear who is in charge without being a bully. He basically has to say: If you don't want to be in on the plan, let me know and you can go somewhere else. He should be able to communicate this without being a bully and just be straight up with the squad.

Alright so as a united fan I would be lying if I said I was mad at the appointment. As you quite rightly said he can’t do much worse. I’m very excited to see how his play style works in the prem where there’s a lot more physicality and I’m also concerned about the players attitudes cuz as we’ve seen they’re not too accepting to change. I think Bruno is gonna be showing his absolute best as captain here tho to demand the players fall in line and listen to the coach. I’m excited basically. And very nervous. So yeah. Thanks for the video Adam it’s always interesting to see your tactical breakdowns

The other small detail about his system that I've only seen mentioned one place is that, in this system, ideally, players are basically running backwards and forwards in straight lines, so there's no confusion as to where they go and what they attack or defend. Where as Bruno is all over the pitch now.

As a Utd fan it hurt to see Ten Hag not succeed in the way that was expected, I called for the man to be hired, kept in the summer and sadly after the last game fired. I believe I shot my shot last time, so this time I will give ineos the chance to succeed with their own target. I have a little bit of hope left, but after 12years the tank of hope is starting to run empty. Here's hoping he's the one that can at least take us back to top 4 and maintain some form of league stability.

Brilliant analysis yet again Adam. The key part is when things aren’t going well and things are breaking down, the players can fall back on the pre determined system. So if, and it’s a big if, Amorim can coach these players to understand their roles within this system, Manchester United might actually have an identity. I’m not a United fan but I’d still really like him to succeed.

As a United fan I feel excited to see a change in manager, can’t wait to see what he’s gonna do with the tools he’s got. He’s seems to have a lot of upside and he’s a very promising manager. But I do get worried that he’ll get dragged down into United’s mess and forced to play pragmatic football. Reason I get worried is that I don’t trust the squad. We’ve seen many managers come in and try their philosophies but end up just playing on the counter like I fear most of this squad want to do anyway. Clearest example in my head is when Ralf Rafgnik tried to drill the 4222 and these players only did it for one half. I want to see him get many of his own signings and two seasons under his belt before I judge him.

I think Amorim is going to to try use Antony as a Right sided CAM. Think about it, Antony is the most predictable when he is on the right wing. Teams know that Antony isn't going to cross because he is so one footed, they are waiting for him to cut inside. as a RCAM, he is already inside, he can now just get the ball in that area, use his trickery and pull the trigger. Amorim loves to have a CAM who can invert inside. He will get that with Antony and he will get that with Rashford on the left hand side. There are 5 signings I want Amorim to make; GK2: Manuel Riemann - Free Transfer in summer - Bayindir wants to start, he isn't going to get it. Make a profit and bring in an elite back up Riemann who is one of the best passing GK in the world. With Amorim wanting his keeper to be part of the defensive line with a defender moving forward having a second keeper capable of doing this should Onana get injured is important. RWB1: Jeremie Frimpong - £40m - He is absolutely lightning down the right hand side and a great crosser of the ball. LCB1: Gonçalo Inácio - £50m- Ideal LCB, great passer and tackler. Martinez can now move into being a back up LCB and back up CDM. LWB1: Alvaro Fernandez - £16.7m- Solves a huge problem for United with an incredibly well round Wing back. CM(8): Angel Gomes - Free Transfer in summer - Ideal Kobbie Mainoo back up and someone who can play in both CAM spots under Amorim. would get loads of game time.

Can definitely see this failing horribly. I think where Man Utd are going wrong is in constantly looking for the next forever manager, the next Alex Ferguson, but to create a culture at the club they could really use more of a churn, head coaches coming in for a year only, the players having to learn from different guys, having to impress a new leader and fight for recognition. They are all too comfortable and the bad habits have piled up. Ten Hag bought shite as well, it's going to take them 5 years to clean that squad up, and there's no way Amorim will be given that long as a transitional coach. Nothing they do makes any sense.

I can understand why he was sacked, but changing manager won't do a damn thing until we move chronic underperformers and replace them with quality players that can be 1st team starters that, crucially, all fit the same system. We have players bought or blooded by Moyes, van Gaal, Mourinho, Solksjaer, and Ten Hag (and maybe Rangnick?). All of these managers had totally different play styles. Our squad is an incomplete jigsaw with pieces from different puzzles that create different pictures. Amorim needs to be backed by the club and players need to be moved on so we can develop or bring in players that fit his vision.

Maybe they need a new fresh formation instead of just stick with 4-2-3-1. With Ruben Amorim, has become a coach in demand for his success in bringing Sporting CP into a respected club, recently beating Manchester City 4-1. With United lack of goals, hire manager of the club scoring 96 goals in the league last season, Sporting CP scored the same total number of goals as manchester city in 2023/2024.

I hope he does play this system. Dalot is not the greatest defender but could be a decent wing back I think. Left side is still a problem with injuries but maybe Amass could fill in. If only we had kept Alvarro Fernandez. We have lots of options at centre back and also in midfield. Fernandez, Garnacho, Amad and Rashord as 10s should work too. TBH I'd settle for a few games where we play long balls as long as we don't leave gaps the size of Trump's ego for the opposition to wander into. Sigh!

Suggests there’s going to be some short term downside for United then because whereas Sporting make the most of a smaller number of chances, United are significantly underperforming their xG. Hard to turn that around quickly

How will they try to press and win the ball? Do they just sit and go for counters?
@PyreonPT
@PyreonPT 15 сағат бұрын
Usually it's somewhere in between, press inside your half. The striker tries to harass the centre-backs and the two 10s are ready to jump but usually the press trigger is when opposition enters their side of the field, and then win the ball there and carry it to the forward lines waiting for support runs. They want to reduce the space between the lines while defending to try to avoid the problem mentioned in the video. They don't really play a very high line which kinda suits United's centre-back profile.

They're are actually possession based, short progressive passes to build up, they are certainly not a park the bus team but the way they set up helps them counter really quickly if you lose the ball against them

Man Utd fan for decades here. Aside from the striker and Goalkeeper positions that you mentioned, i don't think we really have the squad needed for this to work. At least not at the level we would want to. Maybe two of our defenders could work, and out right full back if he ever gets un-injured, but that's it. The midfield is a mess. And i'm not sure there's talent or willpower enough to fix it.

The key thing is how much time do we as United fans give him time to implement his strategy. Problem with the younger generation of United fans is they think it is our divine right to dominate the way SAF did in his 26 year reign but are unwilling to accept that other teams have improved since then and football has changed and Pep is there. Amorim has signed a three year contract with another year option but in that time no guarantee that he will make United title contenders

@isahibrahim7414 how do you define visible progress.Second season ETH had no permanent CB partnership due to injury.This season realistically if we beat Leicester and Arsenal draw or lose the gap between us and Arsenal is 4 points with 27 games to go!!! @@TendaiMatambanadzo no one here has said anything about worse start to a season, any manager who goes through the injury crisis united had last season should have sympathy and ten hag did get it, but united didn't play any better before the injuries hit, also if you watch united you'd know how ten hag sets up is a huge reason why his players kept getting injured
