I think the drop in quality really began in summer ‘09 when we sold Ronaldo and Tevez and replaced them with Obertain, Valencia and a Michael Owen past his prime. At first this wasn’t much of a concern as we remained somewhat competitive under Fergie but it all came home to roost in 2013/14 when Moyes couldn’t replicate this with an ageing squad.

The seed of our downfall was planted in 2005 when the Glazers bought Manchester United on a leverage deal that shouldn't happened. Amid the success due to Ferguson keeping things together, the red flags appeared when the club went into debt and sold key players and replacing them with average dross. Everything went to chaos when Ferguson retired. Moyes should have never been hired, LVG was boring and wasted Di Maria, Mourinho was hired 3 years too late, Ole should have remained interim till the end of the 18/19 season and Ten Hag aka Dr Robotnik aka Eggman Pagan is the worst manager in Manchester United. All the blame goes to the Glazers and Woodward for setting us up for failure and mediocrity.

@eamonreidy9534 Fellaini worked hard and showed resilience, I accept. He could perform a job: heading and elbows out, he was awkward to play against if the team played to his strengths. However, in my opinion, he was not a baller and was nowhere near the standard of footballer a Champions League level team should be signing. Have you seen the footage of him picking the ball up in the DM spot and just dribbling it straight out of play on the touchline? United also delayed the signing, which cost them an extra £5m or thereabouts, typifying the boardroom incompetence that has beset the Club for a decade.
@eamonreidy9534Ай бұрын
@FanofAslan he wasn't near the standard I agree but United as a culture and club buy players who have performed at that standard and make them exponentially worse. There was a point in the mid 2010s where there was an opportunity to do a rebuild in the similar fashion Liverpool did when klopp arrived that took them back to not only relevancy but winning league titles. Bastian schweinstiger was brought in granted he was older but he could’ve been United’s James Milner an accomplished midfield who’s won trophies and is a leader and excellent role model for younger players coupled with Rooney Antonio Valencia and Zlatan that should’ve been enough senior players to use to rebuild the team not around these players but use them like klopp did with hendo and Milner who were far lesser accomplished players. United was obsessed that a few bandaids would prevent the ship from sinking when they should’ve used these senior players for another purpose you can still see the leadership that Milner and hendo instilled in that team

Ferguson was lucky not be sacked as he struggled in his initial seasons. Martin Edwards the chairman stood by him. Leeds won the last Divison 1 title., Manchester United arrived at the beginning of this brave new world with 8 Divison 1 titles, when he departed he was undoubtedly the greatest manager of his time. Liverpool in this time have managed 1 PL title. When he finally departed they had dominated most of the 2 decades, he left behind an old squad which needed to be renewed, David Moyes inherited, this group of players since then its been a revolving door of managers, players, an open cheque book policy paying ridiculous amounts of money for average players and huge pay offs for sacked managers and their staff. It's poor governance by the senior management, lack of a coherent plan that everyone can sign up to, a total lack of leadership off and on the page. Benching Ronaldo was sad man. He came off a loss of one of his twins that season. He need the support from ETH. If Ronaldo would have stayed he could have put United in a better position that season. The season prior was impressive for an older ronaldo coming back to a different premier league to his era

Manchester Utd would have been owned by Mcmanus and Magnier if Ferguson hadnt caused trouble with the ownership of racehorse Rock of Gibraltar, leading to the Glazers taking over. Its ironic that the man that takes the credit for all of the success, has his fingerprints on the mess that the club is in now.

The decline is all down the total and utter mismanagement for over 15 years. Poor transfers, neglecting the facilities, running the stadium into the ground, no football strategy, poor discipline and to cap it all of Jim Ratcliffe is sucking the life and souls out of something that is supposed to be entertainment and hospitality.

Major difference between ManU and Liverpool is that ManU appoint managers that expect the team to adapt to his style. Liverpool appoint managers who are expected to adapt to the team.

Speaking as an LFC fan, if you actually look at what the likes of Houlier, Benitez, Rogers and Klopp did when they started, then you'll see that your statement is totally inaccurate. The only 'partial' exception is Slot, who whilst he inherited 'Klopp's players', he still changed the playing style somewhat.

Yeah slight typo in the title. Liverpool have won the most of any English football club, so if I'm correct and I think I am then that makes them the greatest football club. Bob Paisley has won as many champions league as a manager as United have as a club. English champions league winners, Manchester United 3, Chelsea 2, Nottingham Forest 2, Aston villa 1, Man. City 1 and finally Liverpool 6. So if you include every single English club that ever had professional status and exclude Liverpool for a second, the total amount of every single club would be 9. Now look at Liverpool's total which is 6, how can you say that they are not the biggest club in England when Liverpool is only 3 behind the total of all of those clubs combined. Btw Celtic has as many Champions leagues as Man. City and Arsenal combined.

Goes further back than that, Fergies partnership and ultimate fall out with JP MacManus, meant United had to find a buyer for the club to avoid Fergie getting sacked. The Glazers ended up being the buying party. If Fergie had just swallowed his pride and given up his claim to a racehorse we would never be in this mess. This is truly the event that F'd us. Sir Alex had too much power at the club, he even protected his legacy by appointing an average manager as his replacement in Moyes. The rest is history with the club having no one in place to channel any kind of identity at the club.

Good managers can spot good players who'll enhance the team. Great managers can spot good players who'll not only enhance the team but who feel pride in pulling on the shirt, who want to play at the highest level, who want to learn from the players around them. Great managers, like Ferguson, Klopp, etc could weed out those who simply wanted a high profile shirt on their back and a big pay packet in their pocket from those who wanted to be winners on the pitch. It's not all about money, it's also about pride.

Man uniteds post Ferguson era reminds me very much of what Liverpool went through in the 90’s and long after. After been untouchable in the 70s and 80’s and up to 1991 Liverpool had a sudden fall from grace. The teams and managers they had were a shadow of their former glory unfortunately no one stays at the top for ever and after years of been top saga comes the inevitable fall from grace eventually they’ll bounce back but patience is the key and also remember it took Fergie 7 years to finally win the league and there was also a time his job was on the line

This is no doubt a brilliant case for business studies. Remember when United ran the FA and the premier league and then Fergie/Gill went and it all fell down. They kept on buying big without doing the very basics & having a foundation & clear strategy. Their main ground and academy grounds were falling down and miles behind lower level prem clubs etc
@Antidisestablishmentarianism99Ай бұрын
The Premier League (read chairmen of all the other clubs) let the Glazers leveraged takeover happen which instantly put our club in half a £billion of debt. Once Fergie and Gill retired the Glazers let investment bankers play football manager, wasting a billion whilst taking another billion out of the club in interest and dividends - the rest is history. The bottom line is the takeover should never have happened, but the other clubs let it happen because they knew eventually it would destroy our club.
@Antidisestablishmentarianism99Ай бұрын
@@paulmcnallyfll8228 the ‘fit and proper’ ownership rules, preventing further ridiculous leveraged takeovers with huge interest bank loans, came in after they allowed the American asset strippers to takeover United, benefiting all the clubs except United. The new PSR rules, preventing wealthy owners from funding clubs, came in just before United got Ineos in as an investment partner. The timing of both sets of rules making sure United will remain handicapped until the Gazers sell. The Glazers are only likely to sell if the club is relegated.
