I just had the 2009 this past weekend and I agree with Dillon, Jules scores are way too low. 2007 and Redoubtable are my favorite but a 76 is way to low for this rum. I also disagre that your score should be based on how you scores the previous versions. Your score should be base on what you are experiencing when you drink the current bottle only. If your score are higher or lower so be it.

2007 is my favorite of the current line up. I wish I had back ups of 2007 but was only getting into foursquare when I picked up 2007 so passed on getting more

Nice review. Please check Jule's glass to ensure that he is not drinking something else. I like the aroma of 2009 over 2008. I prefer the complexity and finish of 2008. You need to do a blind side-by-side of 2008 and 2009.

Great episode but leaves me with a few questions: Are the reviews based purely on the bottle and pour in front of you? Or is there a bias and previous reviews impact scoring?

The 2009 quickly became the one which could be a daily sipper for me which was the 2008 before (most likely because the availability is just way better than the "named" ones) for me the 2009 is quite different than the 2008. As of right now one bottle is open and 3 more are sitting on the shelf. I would give the 2009 a 9 out of 10.

Also, forgot to mention, I’m digging the side camera angle. It may be something you’d want to consider doing more often when shooting back home.

Jules was wayyyy off on this one. Dutch had ultra high expectations, which were met... thus the scoring was only good? Yeah, I don't get that. Dillon, you were a bit high, but not super off. This is easily a 90-93 score.

Hmm I don’t know now. I just got a bottle for $90 and I guess when I do crack it open I’ll try to think of it as a cognac rum bridge. This review shows me that on any given day taste and personal preference comes in to play. Very good and I enjoyed this review.

Hey, preference is everything. Everyone has a right to their own score. Jules, you don’t need to defend your score to Djillon. Just because he scored it 90+, doesn’t mean you’re wrong for scoring lower! Even though y’all are drinking the same spirit, the experience is different for everyone. Don’t let them influence you! Keep up the quality content, cheers!

08 is the winner! 09 is great! 07 is a bit sharp and misses the mark, but is still very good! Redoubtable is my favorite Foursquare to date!

I think of the recent ECS's that I have had, this one trails 2008, 2007 and 2005. But I don't think 2009 is bad by any means, and it very much reminds me of Woodford Reserve Master’s Collection: Very Fine Rare, in that it really ventures off the beaten path of Foursquare. I have gotten used to the ECS's having more of that deep fruit Bananas Foster note. This one is more challenging, if still very tasty. Actually I think they would been better served making this a "named" release and not calling this an ECS.

With all this cognac talk, I'd be happy send samples of Foursquare Sassafras to the crew for a tasting/review and/or comparison. It's aged 3 years in ex-bourbon and then 11 years in ex-cognac casks. Let me know!

There are so many recommendations for whiskey lovers looking to get into rum but I am the opposite. I love rums (mostly all kinds as long as they are unsweetened) but have always hated whiskey. Could you recommend a gateway bottle? Thanks!

On a 3 week open bottle revisit for 2009..that nose may be in the top 3 of best nosing of any spirit I have ever drank. The nosing alone is worth a 85 overall score but 2007 & 2008 are better on flavor. I even like the Master series from TW better on flavor.

So Dutch pretty much nailed this one. I think 2009 suffered from being in the shadow of 2008, which was amazing. 2009 is still very good rum, but it is not 2008. If you buy this expecting this to be as good or better than 2008, you will be disappointed. However, I think this is still a solid buy, and I think it's better than the 2007. My ranking is 2008 > 2005 > 2009 > 2007 (I have not had 2006, which was not released in the US). I also think it's worth mentioning that if you're not already familiar with these releases, or if you don't like drinking high proof rum, Sagacity or Detente are probably a better introduction to the Foursquare ECS line.

Paint. I smell paint and it makes it difficult to pick up other aromas. I also get cranberries which is nice, interesting. Flavours and mouth feel are wonderful. Great review guys. First time viewer. Cheers!

Great review! Jillion is right about one thing, 2009 > 2008! Dillion, you go right on ranting for three hours man; you’re incredibly detail oriented and can see things from a different perspective. But he (or maybe all of you) need to do a blind of 07/08/09, redoubtable, and maybe shibboleth. One other thing, I think we all agree redoubtable is the best ECS, but it doesn’t have an official score. What’s up with that? I’d like to see how close it can get to tears. Cheers guys!

Dillon's reaching on this one. Transitional products usually are not the most amazing things in the world. They're usually more of an oddball thing. In this particular case, a rum drinker is not going to reach for this because they'd rather have something that is more traditionally a high quality rum. A cognac drinker is going to have a similar experience on the other end of the spectrum. If you want rum, then grab rum. Want cognac? Grab cognac. The way you guys are describing this, it sounds like only people new to either rum or cognac but experienced in one or the other are going to like this. It seems like a very niche product that most people wouldn't reach for since it's more of a Jack of all trades than a master of a specific category.

You guys... THAT is what drinking with friends is all about! Usually with Jules, but I'm with Dillon this. You don't score this at 9 because you would reach for something else. If that's the case your highest scoring alcohol would be the only one with a 10.
