My take on the Uub thing is given that the producer, years after the fact, was asked why Pan didn't fight on her own more and responded with an incredulous "well then Goku couldn't save her" it's safe to say the creative direction on the show was that only Goku could matter and everyone else was there just for him to look good. I don't think they cared about anyone else.

That makes sense and it’s so egregious. If they EVER decided to actually remake GT (I know, it’ll never happen) they should have made Pan and Uub along with other characters as primary characters. Maybe Goku could make a cameo here and there, but the series *did* end with a passing of the torch.

Honestly, that's the best thing about Super. Goku goes back to getting cooked in every fight and having small hope spots. So Goku has cool moments but he can go down at the start or end of the fight and everyone else gets to shine. Best arc is still The Goku Black arc. Goku get's dropped in every future fight verse Black and Zamasu and it's Trunks and Vegeta carrying. Every fight was Goku getting a cool moment before getting cooked by his literal future self that can say "Ningen" on Iguana street.

That's literally what happened. The editors didn't like the idea of Toryama making Gohan the main character before the Buu arc, they wanted more Goku. So in Dragon Ball Goku Triumphs that's exactly what we get and it's stupid.

And I'm pretty sure that's as far as they thought it through, because Pan's character is infuriatingly obnoxious, and Trunks is completely devoid of any personality, and all three characters are WAY more incompetent and stupid than ever. Count how many times you go "why didn't they just do XYZ?? THEY CAN FLY/or whatever!!!" Internal logic and character consistency went completely out the window. They'd have ruined Buu and Hercule in the exact same way... there is no saving GT no matter what characters you make the protagonists. It's pretty clear that GT wasn't created by passionate artists, it was a cynical product to sell more merchandise. You know, like Star Wars.

The disappointment when they jobbed out Majuub sticks with me decades later. Its such a full circle design with what happened towards the end of Z. For the first time a side character not named Vegeta gets a power up that makes sense to him uniquely. He looks AMAZING with the majin gear. Had they kept baby vegeta as the first form and he had to get his final form to defeat uub, it would've actually been compelling. Then goku shows up and baby is stronger than ever, quickly dispatches goku again and boom super saiyan 4. But no. No we can't have nice things.

Uub, I think, was screwed the moment the writers decided he wasn't going to be apart of the initial Grand Tour group. Well, more screwed than usual. Could you imagine if he actually got to go along on the first arc, and we could've had some real development for him? How his fight with Baby Vegeta and his fusion with Majin Buu would've been built up over the course of the entire series up to this point? How he might've interacted with Pan, Goku's granddaughter, as the student Goku left his family behind to train with? ... okay, none of that likely would've happened because this is GT, but STILL. The potential was there, and the obvious solution would be to include him as GOKU'S FREAKING CHOSEN SUCCESSOR. Sure, he'd be repeating Gohan's arc, but STILL!

I was one of the people that didn't think GT was "that" bad. You guys are very swiftly changing my stance on that. This is way worse than I remember. I mean super saiyan 4 is still the coolest transformation in the series, but everything leading up to it is hurting my soul. Heck, I'm almost dreading the next arc because I know it's the one people hated the most and for the life of me I still don't know why. Granted I remember basically nothing about the arc come to think of it, but the fact that it's the most universally hated arc in GT says a lot.

So no, it had nothing to do with being filler because there was no manga to follow and it wasn't seasonal.

Yes...Dragon Ball doesn't know how to retire its characters. And since every threat is for the fate of the world...there's no reason for those characters to not be there even if they have nothing to do.

Gohan's fate is more or less ambiguous because Toriyama didn't like him as a main protag. The problem is usually determining "WHEN" he stops being a main character. There are at least three points in the series he stops being the central protagonist: After Goku contacts him for the WT, after he gets beaten by Fat Buu and when Super Buu absorbs Gotenks and Piccolo. However, Uub has none of these issues. He just doesn't get a chance to shine. He is NEVER the central point. He is set up as a successor and gets THREE episodes in a 40~ episodes arc. Gohan gets pivoted around after Toriyama gets bored with him, Uub gets IGNORED because the producer doesn't want HIM to take away from GOKU'S SPOTLIGHT. AKA: He wasn't even writen to be a central protagonist, he is a jobber.

Y'know, if you map the character's behaviour in the early episodes to Pan, Hercule and Buu, it actually makes a lot of sense. Pan is still Pan, Hercule is the straight man who is always panicking and trying to be smart about things, Buu is the super-powered problem solving machine who is too detached from reality to work correctly. Buu would feel less like a dick than Goku did whenever he was goofing off since it's congruous with his established personality and history.

Seeing Kaiser starting to crack is a beautiful sight to behold. 😁 And I can't believe it took so long for me to realize it, but it finally clicked when Lani made all those wrestling metaphors: _Vince McMahon was the head writer for GT._ It makes perfect sense; the inconsistent writing, potentially interesting ideas/characters suddenly getting pushed aside before they get a chance to breathe, the actual good fights getting cut super short, etc.... yes, this clearly has McMahon's stink all over it. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if he dipped his filthy hands into Super, as well (he WOULD push someone as boring as Jiren to be the main antagonist of a tournament arc, lol). Thankfully, Triple H is in charge now, so maybe that means potentially better writing for Daima, eh? 😉

If I had to give an honest to goodness guess as to why the Mario party-esque stuff was even here, I'd say that this was a remnant from an early point of GT's development. Like, this was probably a story that they had settled on back when they were coming up with GT's initial concept, back when it was originally just supposed to be a OGDB-esque adventure show, to the point of having official Toriyama-drawn designs for those robo-tanooki lookin' things. But then the shift to a more DBZ-esque story happened, and because no one wanted to waste the designs Toriyama drew for the show, the writers decided to make this episode and a half, in an attempt at salvaging what they had left from the original plan.
