Hey Adam! I started re-watching your channel after several years. It's great to see you in videos. I stopped watching years ago because I was broke at the time and seeing cool retro games I couldn't afford was too much. Now I made it, and I've started a beautiful collection! Another fascinating video Adam. This is probably my favourite generation as well. The Commodore product you mentioned is called the CDTV. It was essentially an Amiga 500 computer, with a CD ROM drive. It was the forerunner to the CD32 that you covered recently, however it was never marketed as a console, but neither was the Philips CDi. The Amiga CDTV, and the CDi we are both marketed as home multimedia set-top boxes. It was a market that a lot of companies assumed would be big in the early 90s, basically multimedia encyclopaedias, atlases, videos and study aids. As we know though, the market wasn't quite ready for it.

This is my favorite generation. Of them Genesis is my number one I sunk an ungodly amount of time playing games like X-Men 2 Clone Wars, Shining Force, Dune Battle For Arrakis and Dungeons and Dragons Warriors of the Eternal Sun among others that were Genesis exclusives. Turbografx is my number two as my uncle had one and later on a cousin of mine had one so I played a bunch of games back then. Only managed to beat 2: Bonk's Adventure and Military Madness. And played a lot of Dungeons and Dragons Order of the Griffin that plays very much like the Sega one. Then SNES 3rd. I had a friend down the street who had one and while I loved the rpgs it wasn't my preferred style at that time (except Shadowrun) and the lack of turn based strategy games didn't help and was not a fan of D&D Eye of the Beholder, but I still loved it just the other two a little bit more. And my God did I, and still do, want a Neo-Geo. I'm jealous looking at it.

This is probably my favorite console generation. I gotta be honest, I was like the most annoying Sega fanboy back in the day. But still to this day, I don't know what came over me and bought the SNES instead when it came out. Loved the console, but looking back on it now, I do think the Mega Drive was the close winner. The console that I absolutely idolized though was the Neo Geo AES. It was extremely rare in my country and it seemed more like an urban myth, few people knew about it and I didn't know anyone that had it at that time. I only saw one at a console club (videogame store) on display playing a Fatal Fury game. I grew up in the arcades so this console was like a dream machine for me. Great job as always Adam. I am looking forward for your next video!

Out of all the gaming generations, I love the 4th one the best. SNES (also my first console) had Mario, Final Fantasy, while Genesis had Sonic, Phantasy Star. Neo Geo had KoF, and PC Engine had Bonk! The last generation where 2D was the main focus, and the last generation to have console makers (minus Pioneer and Phillips) be about games and games only! Also aside from the two I just mentioned, this was also the last generation where everyone used cartridges! Funny how gens later, I still go back and power on my SNES and Genesis on a almost daily basis!

It was Sinclair behind the Spectrum. Out of all those home computer types (Spectrum, Amiga etc) the only one I ever owned was the Amstrad CPC464+ which had a tape deck and a cartridge slot. I've still got an Amstrad GX4000 and a whole 3 games for it! If anyone's interested, there's a movie similar to the Pirates of Silicon Valley called Micro Men that looks at the rivalry between Sinclair and the BBC Micro. The 4th gen was my introduction to gaming in the early/mid nineties too. Like you Adam, the Mega Drive and Dreamcast are my two favourite systems.

I'm really looking forward to it, really the best gen next in my opinion and even though things like the MegaCD or BS-X weren't much of a thing to us as players back then, I guess those things still make these systems unique and interesting. Discussion of connection among generations matches my description of progression in JRPGs. Golden age (snes and ps1) was when creativity exceeded tech. Silver age (ps2) was when tech was on par with tech. Dark/Present age has tech exceeding creativity.

This generation is my favourite generation. I started out with an NES & naturally moved to an SNES in 1994. Friends & family had Genesis, SNES, & even TG16, depending on who. What I liked most about the 4th gen are the polished environments and overall look, as well as even more imaginative gameplay that got going during the 3rd gen. Mario, Sonic (yes I know he came about here, but his games went from pretty nice in 1991 with the 1st one to legendary with Sonic & Knuckles at the end of '94), Final Fantasy, Zelda, Metroid, Mega Man, Castlevania, TMNT, & loads of others were great before, but became truly established household names by this point. Many games in the 3rd gen have a glitchy charm to them that I like nowadays, but that is mainly out of nostalgia. The 4th gen was where quality control really shows. Something else I liked about this generation was that it was so interesting in that there were CD add-ons that were being pushed due to the multimedia craze that was also going on, like today we have 'Internet of Things' as the latest big buzzword. Everyone wanted in on the action, from Sega to JVC to Philips to Nintendo to Atari to Commodore to Sony to the companies who made 3DOs, everyone wanted to be on that next cutting edge & were hoping their formula was the one for success. Unfortunately, this also likely meant a lot of money lost between companies making all this stuff that didn't really succeed, & consumers whose' wallets were much lighter after buying some of these expensive add-ons or that crazy-expensive 700$ 3DO. I am confused about where this gen end & the next begins due to the timing of the 3DO & Jaguar launches - those came out right as Sega was pushing their Sega CD & their new 32X add-ons, but the PlayStation was over a year away in the USA, possibly 2 years. I think companies learnt from this generation that it is best to just make one console & focus on that. The Amiga CD32 was the console version of one of their computers, & it probably would fit in best as 4th-gen, given that the games were still 2D for the most part. I believe there existed the CDTV as well, but the CD32 was more of a console than any of their other stuff. Still supported computer component slike their disk drives, etc, though.

There are probably so many great games I have not played from this gen simply because it was before my time. I mainly want to know more about Nintendo in this gen because I know virtually nothing about what they did in the 4th gen, which is partly to do with me only playing the handheld Nintendo consoles up till the Wii U which was the first Nintendo home console I actually got interested in.

I love your videos (and your predictions), I have learned a lot from them. I grew with the SNES and that's my favourite generation too. Isn't it funny that generation four had more good games than the recent generations? Perhaps it is that making vieo games has become so damn expensive, that companies don't take risks as easily as before.

I find it strange how much I agree with you on things regarding the generations. I was an N64 kid, but the opening of the 4th gen and 6th gen to my eyes really made me realize a lot about gaming as a whole. I am in completely agreement that 3rd and 5th were really just the preamble to the other consoles which had a consistently solid library of games and some of the most transcendent experiences of all time. They really felt like games that could ONLY be played on a console, rather than just altered arcade games. Even Super Mario World remains my favorite 2D Mario. Since I'm off doing my own gaming history things, I'm very much looking forward to exploring the reaches of Gen 4. The most surprising thing which I've learned about has been the PC Engine. I'm astounded just how successful it was in it's native land and how progressive it was in terms of a console. It's sort of like the Colecovision of the 4th gen. I think it's impossible to really sum up the 4th gen in any timely manner. There's so much that goes into its construction and a lot of preconceived notions that hopefully you'll address a little bit. It really was the head to head competition that made these consoles unique and great, and I'm glad that the growing generation will be able to talk about them with personal experience.

I just starting watching your series after a long hiatus so forgive me if this comment is not pertinent to the above video but I wanted to make sure you read this. I just wanted to mention in reference to your Atari 5200 controller Gamerade video that there is a company called Best Electronics that offers an upgrade to the controller that should, theoretically, prevent the user from ever having to open up and clean out the controller ever again. I have not used their products but there are plenty of people on the Atari Age forums who have and their experiences are all very positive. What is relevant to the above video is that I just purchased a model 1 Genesis with s-video, region free mod, and will also convert 50hz to 60hz. I do not own any PAL games at the moment but the s-video output is a tremendous upgrade over the composite, so nice in fact that I have no desire to upgrade to RGB.

The Commodore CDTV is as much of a console as the Philips CD-i. You can add a keyboard and a floppy drive and use it as a computer, but they're not needed for normal use.
@AdamKoralik9 жыл бұрын
If you say so. Most people consider it a PC/console hybrid. Though honestly I don't really have enough information on it to positively state either way.

Hey Adam if your ever in the Charlotte and Greensboro areas you should check out Save Point and Lost Ark videogames

Daniel Butcher Thanks for watching!

Is it bad that I thought the two big systems on the bottom looked like VCRs? Also, just how stable was the stack? I kept thinking some of the systems were going to fall or at least wobble when you touched them.
@AdamKoralik9 жыл бұрын
The only one that was ever in danger of becoming displaced was the SNES.

Yesssssss 4th gen recap is here
@sev23008 жыл бұрын
I still like to see Sega back and start making consoles. There will come a day when these two companies go head to head with each other again.
@Unveiiled9 жыл бұрын
Awesome video and shirt :D , can you maybe do a roomtour video , or 2nd/3rd gen recap?
@AdamKoralik9 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Maybe, though the room tour isn't likely.

***** You need to enable replies bud. And the answer to that is...not really. You'll see when I make the video.
@gudenau9 жыл бұрын
Why do they even get disabled? It is a nice feature.
@AdamKoralik9 жыл бұрын
gudenaurock Either the user disables them, or more likely they're using their Google+ page instead of their KZbin page to comment.
@AdamKoralik9 жыл бұрын
***** Yes I am. Wasn't planning on it...but then realized I had a lot to say about them.
@hotscorcher95449 жыл бұрын
Google+ and KZbin is a mess. It was a real headache to find the way to use a "nickname" for my KZbin account instead of something with two words, like your real name. I had to create a channel, link it to a Google+ page, then delete that damn Google+ page! Because nooo, it can't be so simple, right?

AdamKoralik I think that nostalgia of gaming was going to be taken one way or another. If it was not Sony or Microsoft then it could have been Commodore, Phillips, or any other company at the time that was not a gaming only company from the grounds up. BTW I love your videos about the seventh, sixth, fifth, and so far the fourth generation of consoles, can you do all the generations of video game consoles?.
@terrythe2dmaniac719 жыл бұрын
you should definitely do a video on the 2nd generation if you own part of the consoles from that generation as I'm pretty sure its very easy to get a hold of the intellvision and collecovision.

Have you heard of the Retro VGS console thats being developed? It uses the Atari Jaguar mold as its case. Will this be something worth investing in?
@AdamKoralik9 жыл бұрын
Can't say I know much about it. If it's some crappy clone console, I'd avoid it.
@DrLeatherface9 жыл бұрын
AdamKoralik it's not going to be a clone console, it is actually a brand new console that plays original 16bit titles. It's being worked on by Gamester81 and his collectorvision company. I'm guessing it will be a dedicated platform for their retro style games. Sounds interesting.
@AdamKoralik9 жыл бұрын
DrLeatherface Huh, that's pretty neat.
@jacobziacan38689 жыл бұрын
I am really interested in this. I hope people support it because it would be the last cart console. I hope you look into it Adam.

Awesome, love this series. This is the generation I was introduced to gaming, back in '94 with the all-stars pack so I'm really looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the snes. You present gaming history pretty well, have you ever thought of expanding your enthusiastic format into similar-but-different productions? (like a company or character opinion series) p.s. (the atari jaguar-dental machine trivia was mindblowing) thanks
@AdamKoralik9 жыл бұрын
What like movies or politics or something?
@stephenobrien69839 жыл бұрын
Well talking about whatever your passionate about would work. I was thinking of more along the line of something to supplement the insight found in these videos, like a comprehensive recap of gaming history as a whole or maybe just a short opinion piece on some of the major players who influenced the industry?
@AdamKoralik9 жыл бұрын
Stephen O'Brien Kind of a retelling of history but from a less fixed position perhaps?
@andytaveras36959 жыл бұрын
Would u do the second generation and the third also wat about the handheld generations
@AdamKoralik9 жыл бұрын
I may.
@SuperGabetendo7774 жыл бұрын
Hi, I'm new! Will you do one for the 8th generation and then maybe the 9th one?

Probably

I take it you will mention the ill fated SuperCD since you didn't mention it here. Looking forward to the next parts of this as it is my favorite generation.
@AdamKoralik9 жыл бұрын
The SNES CD? I'll be talking about it during the CDI video.
@SageOwl9 жыл бұрын
AdamKoralik CD-I huh; I guess that would make sense given their relation.
@AdamKoralik9 жыл бұрын
Dr. Steve Brule That and there isn't much else to say about the CDI. :P
@SageOwl9 жыл бұрын
AdamKoralik Haha. good point. Eugene Levy's Whacky World of Miniature Golf could take up at least a good 3 minutes though.
@AdamKoralik9 жыл бұрын
Dr. Steve Brule Can't say I knew that was a thing.
@Fridgidice9 жыл бұрын
Hell yeah. Can't wait for the NES/genesis videos.
@AdamKoralik9 жыл бұрын
NES is 3rd generation.
@Fridgidice9 жыл бұрын
Either way. I originally wrote SNES but was unsure which one was actually relevant to this generation and was too lazy to look it up because i'm not yet educated enough to immediately know, which is why i watch this series and subscribe to you, so i just went with the older one. Still, my bad.
