But my younger brother for example who in theory should grew up and like 7th one best, prefers 5th Gen and PS1 classics so much better than any modern games. I think it also depends from kid to kid. Not all kids like realistic games and shooters.

Great video and I completely agree about how the 6th generation hit that sweet spot in the evolution of gaming. The technology was at a point where 3d games could be done well but gaming had not yet been fully poisoned by the business practices that would rear their ugly head in the 7th generation. It's comforting to know that 99% of the time when I buy a game for my Dreamcast or Xbox it will be a complete product. Sigh... If only the industry would go back to those days...

My brothers and I each chose one side during this war. My older brother got an XBox, my younger brother a PS2 Slim, and me a Gamecube. In the end, the XBox's AC adaptor was damaged and my older brother didn't have the money to fix or replace it, so he beat the console in the backyard with a bat. My younger brother pushed the PS2 aside when he got enough money for a 360, and now my parents use it as a DVD player. I still have my Gamecube and regularly play both Gamecube and Game Boy games (thanks to the Game Boy Player) on it. So who won that battle there?
@DjStiv39 жыл бұрын
xbox noone gives a crap about unless he played live on it, the other one getting a 360 was stupid, should have stuck with sony then. And as for you there are many ways to play gba games and you can play GC on a wii (hell gba too) and with component cables if you want. Ps2 had them as well. In the end noone really won, you just decided to hang onto your old system which many do. I got my original ps1 under my bed me an my bro use to play years ago, yes its laser and plastic around it is beat up and can possibly scratch cd's but hey i love it and even the controller whose analog sticks are beat up. At some point i might whip it out and play it again however the games to me are more memorable which is why i kept the ones i liked most and sold off everything else.

Well I did get a Wii too, it's just by comparison of their start up screens, the Gamecube is a little faster. As for my younger brother, once he had gotten sick of paying $50 a month for XBox Live, all the trash talk he got from other players on Modern Warfare, and needed the money for Skateboard related stuff, he sold his 360. Must've been karma telling him not to diss the PS2.

6th gen was the best generation of consoles
@MrThugergnaut9 жыл бұрын
I remember growing up with the 6th generation of consoles and I got to say IMO the 6th generation was the last epic generation for video games. I first got the Dreamcast and played the shit out of it. The Dreamcast is my favorite console out of the whole generation and in gaming history. I had a demo disc for it and I remember playing the demos for Sonic Adventure (the first Sonic game I've ever played), Power Stone, Ready 2 Rumble, and The House of The Dead 2. I got more games later on like Dino Crisis, The House of The Dead 2 (full game), and Ready 2 Rumble (full game). Then one night my dad came home from work and I saw him carry a PS2 in his hands. I was so excited and happy that I had one and I remember playing GTA 3 (first GTA game I've ever played) and from then on I fell in love with the GTA series and became a die hard GTA fan. I also remembered playing Ratchet & Clank (demo), Sly Cooper (forgot which one I played and that was also a demo), Need For Speed Undergrounds 1 & 2, Metal Gear Solid 2 Sons of Liberty, and I also played some PS1 games on it like Fifa and Resident Evil 2. Sadly, I don't have my PS2 anymore since it broke and I sold it a long time ago. I remember when I first got the Xbox, I was at my cousin's house and my dad was sitting in the couch and I told him about the Xbox and how much I would love to have one. He told me to get in the car and he drove me all the way to GameStop to buy one. I got 2 games with it which is Amped and Enter The Matrix (I wanted to get Halo but they didn't have it sadly). I never felt so happy and excited in my life and as soon as I came back to my cousin's house, I plugged it in and played Amped like crazy. It was a snowboarding game that was so much fun and Enter The Matrix was a lot of fun too. I have a lot more memories with the Xbox then the PS2. I eventually got even more games for it like Halo 2, MechAssault, Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, Doom (I rented it at BlockBuster when they were still around) and I also rented a SpongeBob video game which I thought was fun as well. I had Jet Set Radio Future that came bundled with another game that was Sega Rally 2002 I think. I also got a demo disc for the Xbox (yeah I had a lot of demo discs for the 6th gen) and I played Fusion Frenzy that was an awesome party game and Destroy All Humans which was the best demo IMO and I wanted to get the full game but I couldn't. I played Terminator 3: Rise Of The Machines movie game and it was ok but it could've been better. Later on I got more games for the Xbox like GTA Vice City, GTA San Andreas, ESPN NFL 2K5, NBA Live 2005, Medal of Honor: Frontline and a demo for Toe Jam and Earl 3: Mission To Earth. The only console out the 6th gen that I never really owned was the Gamecube but my cousin had one. I remember going to his house to play Super Mario Sunshine, Super Smash Bros Melee, Luigi's Mansion, Metroid Prime, The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, Battalion Wars and Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life. The 6th generation will always hold a special place in my heart.

This generation is the golden era of gaming because the XBOX, PS2 and GameCube had equal capabilities in terms of 3D graphics and time to load, although the GameCube uses Mini Discs, resulting in less game storage, so games had to be separated in discs, unlike the PS2 and XBOX, so less powerful in terms of storage. The PS2 also could not save without a memory card, and has 2 memory card slots, but XBOX has memory card slots in controllers and a hard drive, so in terms of storage, XBOX is the most powerful.

why is it that gamecube games are more expensive now than xbox and ps2 games?
@AdamKoralik9 жыл бұрын
Like anything, supply and demand. Less GameCube stuff was produced than PS2 or XBox stuff. But after the Wii exploded, a bunch of people wanted to check out the GameCube, only to find that there wasn't many copies of things.

AdamKoralik I live in the UK and all Nintendo games (except wii) are stupidly expensive, because the Nintendo brand had its arse kicked by Sega and Sony and many others back in the day, you can find Sega master system games way more easily over here than you probably can in the US, they even have FM sound built right into them, something the us versions left out, it wasn't until the wii came out that Nintendo began to see some profit over in Europe
@Halbared4 жыл бұрын
Peter Williams Nintendo sold well before the Wii, in the UK and scrubs Europe as whole. NES was the biggest 8bit console in Europe and SNES was the biggest 16bit seller.

Thought I'd share this- but back in HS I used to sell pirated films (shhh dont tell anyone please). I would actually go the VCD way. Believe it or not I remember there being a huge demand from kids with Dreamcasts. I'll never forget one kid wanted 8 copies of Meet The Parents for his Dreamcast. Why 8 I'll never know... Edit: For those not in the know many DC games are still readily available to be purchased brand new. For instance I picked up Chu Chu Rocket and Space Channel 5 shrink wrapped for a grand total of 10 bucks. You cant beat that. Of course there is the price of Project Justice which just pisses me off. Especially for those bums who are selling it disk only for exorbitant prices. I keep hope alive that I'll find it in the wild for next to nothing.

Man the original Xbox looks amazing compared to the 360 and even the XB1. I like the XB1 has a console, but the Xbox Classic as I like to call it looks cooler. I don't know why I had to say that but I did lol. On another note I would love to collect game consoles and games like you but there are two factors that are keeping me from doing so. 1. The neighborhood I live in kind of rough and the consoles I do own are not really that safe. 2. My wife is already upset about the 5 consoles that I own. She says we have way to many and we don't need to get anymore haha.

Thanks for the video! I completely agree with you with this generation. I just completed my sixth generation console collection with an OG Xbox (which was the only one of this generation I had in high school) and just had it recapped to continue its lifespan. I was given a GameCube and PS2 later on in college and only had a few games for each (notably Mario Sunshine, Smash Bros Melee, Capcom vs SNK 2, God of War 2, Shadow of the Colossus, and MGS3). I now have all 4 consoles hooked up at all times (3 on a CRT) because there are so many good games out there. I had a PS3 later on but it never grabbed me like the 6th generation. Then I skipped the PS4 and Xbox One because I was still having fun with my PS3, I was busy with work and school, and the Xbox One put a bad taste in my mouth. Now I have a Switch and Xbox Series X which are both incredible but I still find myself coming back to the sixth generation!

I wasn't one of the viewers who requested this overview, but I was pleased to see it in my subs list. I would mention that even though the early Wii's can play Gamecube games I find it much more enjoyable to play on the Gamecube hardware. It's the combination of menu dredging and the excess noise of the Wii that really holds it back from being as good as the quick and quiet cube. Even the panasonic q suffers in that regard.
@AdamKoralik10 жыл бұрын
I completely agree, but it's hard to portray that argument to people. "You're saying I should spend $100 on GameCube component cables because the Wii menu is slightly annoying? Fuck you! Unsubbed!" People get angry about the weirdest things.

17:35 That's a very interesting take on why retro games become valuable. I'm 16 and I grew up with these consoles; you're absolutely right because most of my friends don't have jobs yet, especially those who played these as kids like I did. Luckily, I still have my collection (I'm only missing some PS1 games as a matter of fact), and I've been collecting from the NES to now via second-hand game stores and such, but at my age I'm obviously an anomaly. ...It's just weird to think about. 4:24 Actually, PS2 is capable of 1080p. Homebrew devs at psx-scene have figured out that overclocking the shader clock by something miniscule (like 2 MHz, can't remember) allowed them to output a progressive signal at 1920x1080 resolution. And it also depends on which version of the PS2 you're using on how clean the image will turn out. The newer ones tend to look better (especially on composite). If you wanna use it in games, you gotta get Free McBoot and GS Mode Selector, a bit of a long story.
@hugo-garcia5 жыл бұрын
Actually that is a "Fake" 1080P and there is no shader overclock. Read GSM topucs at ps2-home.com to find this information. Because of it is a "fake" thing there was a lot of problems and so this feature was removed since Open loader Daily build 1271. The max supported resolution in PS2dev kit is 720P (because 720P is has higher pixel count than 1080i since it is actually 540 lines on screen so 720P is higher resolution than 1080i )

With the 1080i point, PAL regions like australia (where I come from) for whatever reason had the highest signal being 480p (using Gran Turismo 4 as an example) at, for whatever reason at 50 frames per second rather than 60. Seriously, that is shit. Also, look at this ebay.com.au page for Castlevania: Symophony of the Night www.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2050601.m570.l1311.R1.TR2.TRC1.A0.H0.Xcastlevania+symp&_nkw=castlevania+symphony+of+the+night&_sacat=0 Notice something? All the PAL copies are well over $100. I know this doesn't REALLY pertain to the sixth gen but I just wanted to rant about region locking.

I love this generation, and had and still have my GameCube, and think it had some of the best games ever made, like Super Mario Sunshine, Resident Evil 4, etc.. and some games on the Game Cube have been in a steady rise in value for a few years now like Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes I've seen go for as high as $100 in near mint condition, and the copy I had went for about $50 on Ebay in a bidding war(only sold it because I needed the money last year), Ikaruga on the Game Cube has held it's value of around the $30-$60 range on average, and HOLY HELL!! a complete GameBoy player with the boot disc is like insanely hard to find now at a good price, and only a few years ago I could walk into a Game Stop and they would be selling them with the boot disc for about $10-$15 used. I think the Wii has played some part in this, as people that got the Wii who did not own a GameCube and went back to the GameCube's library too see what they had missed.

Dreamcast seems to be the design that not only Xbox learned from but also to go into the next generation. I didn't have a lot of great Dreamcast games so I'm actually seeking out cheaper Xbox games that are new to me now because sega stuff on disc consoles are so expensive now. I always had the n64 and ps2. Now that I have money to be a collector this is my favorite generation. Smooth 3d and smooth controls. It didn't necessarily look the most realistic but that's also why the games had better playability.
@starpier3 жыл бұрын
I still feel like the fifth generation was the better one, when compared to the sixth. This is depending on what kind of player you are, I love JRPGs especially, followed by survival horrors and fighting games (mostly 2D). The library of the PS1 is in my opinion still superior to the excellent library of PS2, At that time we also had N64 and the Saturn offering great alternatives. The Dreamcast has amazing games but was crushed by the PS2 so there was not a real competition between the two consoles, and the GameCube was in many ways a flop. The Xbox here in Europe was not embraced, we very horrified by the idea of a PC masked as a console. Today that would be laughable of course.

The nicest fad this gen had was compatibility with portable consoles. Dreamcast links up with VMU and Neo Geo Pocket Color, and Gamecube linked up with Game Boy Advance. It's quite an experience unlike anything else that has ever been done any other times besides this. Transferring my points earned from Match of the Millennium (NGPC) into Capcom Vs SNK(DC), or playing Four Swords(GC) with each GBA output. It's obviously not a profitable thing, but it was so neat.

The sixth generation was one of my favorite gaming generations. The sixth gen had the Dreamcast, best console of that gen IMO. The XBox, that console helped define online gaming. The PS2 was really good, and kinda gimmicky. Lastly, The Gamecube, the GB had all the best first party games. My favorite thing about the sixth gen, was the lack of day one DLC's, patches, and DRM. I feel that the sixth gen was the last amazing era in gaming. The seventh gen was good as well, but it had its problems.

I'm re-watching this video in 2020 and oh my God he was 100% correct about the rarity spike and how you should be collecting now (In 2014) before demand for this generation gets too high. I remember back when this video was new and it was really easy to shop for 6th generation stuff, but it's gotten much MUCH harder now. The GameCube has to be the worst offender, collecting for it in 2020 is absolutely disgusting as game prices and even some controller prices are absurdly high for the system.

Canceling the Memory card is one thing that kinda step back in video games. With memory card you can easily take your game to your friend house and play with them. Nowadays we no longer play with friends face to face but instead sitting at home and just talk thought the mic, memory card could be one of the reason why we no longer to play with friends sitting beside you anymore
@jeonginnielvr8 жыл бұрын
Memory cards for 7th/8th console gens would be extremely expensive, since games in these eras take tons of megabytes, as opposed to kilobytes for 6th gen games.

@One36732417 жыл бұрын
+almighty_luigi Not really. The reason why hard drives in modern consoles are so large is to handle having actual games saved on them. Save files, inherently, do not take up that much space. To give you an example of how big a save file would be for an action game like DMC, create a text document filled with nothing but a single that reads "abcdefg". Then, look at the file size; it really doesn't get that much bigger, because save files are just containers for, more often than not, very simple lines of data.
@One36732417 жыл бұрын
What ultimately ruined game consoles was making online console gaming a standard. If that were to go away, a lot of modern bullshit would erode as well.
@7jh6g547hhd7 жыл бұрын

To me this is personally the best console gen, first off you had four choices which has never really happened and they were all good viable choices in most parts of the world (cough xbox in japan). They all had unique things to them so theres lots of variety and different appeal in each system and what it does best. Their all reliable, and they all can be connected to modern TVs easier than any older systems thanks to component support and HDMI adapters. And their mostly not crippled without the internet unlike almost everything afterwards. And all of them have crap tons of games.

That is a good theory about 3D games and the 6th generation, but I'd argue that it took even longer for a lot of Devs to get a good sense of how 3D games should work. Many of them still don't really know, but that might just be the creativity deficiency that happens when game companies get too big.
