Join us on this extra special journey of transporting this Lancashire boiler 12 miles to the Chester-Le-Street steam rally using 2 Fowler 3 speed road loco's "Kingfisher" & "Windrush". And a 45 tonne Scammell heavy haulage trailer with Sentinel 6 tonne drop sided ruler for transporting coal & water at the back of the convoy. The Crew Consist's of Brian Kell "Dangerous Brain" & Cris Bainbridge manning "Kingfisher", a young lad Cameron on the trailer brakes, & Jack Robinson with Mark Bainbridge aboard "Windrush". Many hours have gone into restoring the 2 trailers and painting the boiler ready for the show back in july which was sadly canceled due to the heavy rain so it was rescheduled for 21st & 22nd of September.
With only a small handful of folks doing Steam Haulage such as the Horsham Traction Company; • Heavy Steam Traction
& Alex Sharphouse;
• Talisman Tour 2021: An...
have recreated these impressive scenes of Englands era of steam Haulage which there is a book called the "THE BIG BOX" by T.Mctaggart which is an excellent book for anybody who wishes to see & learn more about other impressive loads by these massive iron giants mainly undertaken by Norman E Box.
Fowler No.14888 "Kingfisher'' 8 NHP R3 Compound road loco which was originally a 2 speed built new for the Ministry of munitions in 1917 & spent its first year baling hay in the Home countries.
After the end of WW1 in November 1918 a vast number of engine were sold.
A batch of 10 Fowlers were sold to Foleys of Bourne Lincolnshire one of which was "Kingfisher"
The 3rd owner was Thomas Gee of Wrydelands Farm, Thorney who was a Threshing contractor used "Kingfisher" to power his Clayton & Shuttleworth threshing drum. After Mr Gee's death in 1929 the engine & drum went to peterburgh market where both sold and were bought by H Gibbons & Son's "Kingfisher" for £82 & the thresher for £52 it was later then sold in 9th December 1952.
The Ministry order 50 R3's No.14888 "Kingfisher" & No14893 "Midnight" are the only 2 left in in road Loco form as the rest have all been converted into Showman's spec either in there working life or in preservation.
We Reckon the Lancashire Boiler weighs about 20 tonnes & the Scammell trailer weigh about another 10 tonne + plus another 17 tonne when "Windrush" starts lagging.
The 45 tonne Scammel Heavy Haulage trailer we can see carrying the boiler was owned & operated by th famous Pickfords & then sold to Thompson boiler works for similar work as can be seen in the video. Boiler no.130 Manufactured by John Thompson & co in 1927 is 30ft long & 7ft 6" in diameter with a working pressure of 120 psi, because of its weight it had to be lifted onto the trailer with a mobile crane. The boiler came from Kew Bridge Steam Museum.
Bringing up the rear is Fowler No.14925 "Windrush" which is also a 8 NHP engine but is an TE2 model compound & was originally a 2 speed general purpose engine also built in 1917 for the ministry of munitions as an Haulage & winding engine. In the video Brian has sent me some old photos of it with its winding drum still attached. Of the 75 TE2's ordered by the Ministry the only 2 that still have there winding drums on are
No.14933 "Challenger" & No.14950 "Lady Penelope"
At the end of the road train is the sentinel 4-6 tonne 4 wheel drop side rulley that was built in 1920's & owned by A.Robinson & sons Farnham Surrey which is now used by Brian to carry coal, water & passengers.

Can sometimes take a bit of synchronising the sound to the video but a good whistle helps, if only I could add the smell of hot oil it would be complete.

16 years since I left the UK & the Micheal Davis Fowler steam ploughing gang + a Fowler road loco & trailer too . Great to see and hear these fantastic memories again. Also great how British car drivers so considerate and patient. I just can't see that happening with New Zealand drivers!! Especially JAFA's !!

Absolutely fantastic video. A lot of thought as gone into making this both filming and roading the engine’s. Love how you have kept the sound of the two engines. It’s fantastic to hear them working. You have done your research…well done. Shame about the tree getting in the way of your drone. Love the ending…just goes to show “team work makes the dream work”. Here’s to many more fabulous videos.

That was awesome Robbie!! Great work on the filming and the back story on the engines. Well done to the enginemen too, there was a lot of up hill and down dale on that route. We had Lancashire boilers in our tin mines hear in cornwall, and of course our Cornish style too!! Moved by teams of up to 20 horses untill the traction engine took over. Great video👌

Thought you would enjoy this one. 20 horses would be a fair sight. Was at Nothern heavy horse society ploughing match last weekend having ago and watching a few of the shire horses. I’ll have to look up a Cornish boiler

@@Ro33ie19 the Cornish boiler was designed by Richard Trevithick, think the main difference is that the Lancashire boiler has two flues running down through it and Cornish has one. Moving boilers with big teams of horses was done a lot hear in cornwall. As the mines closed pumping and winding engines would be moved to another mine. Also the cast rocking beams ( we call them bobs) were very heavy to move too. Yes mate that video was just what I like!!👌
