They have so many cool, interesting gadgets and gizmos. Also not fair. I want to roll around in the ice as well lol. But really though, that scenery is just breathtaking. You’re so blessed and fortunate to have experienced such incredible places. I’m stuck in a city where if you don’t walk fast enough (and at times even if you do) people will trample you right over. It has to be so serene to just be out in the woods, the quiet of nighttime and the stars out with a roaring fire and just appreciating all Mother Nature has to offer. Stars are definitely hard to see here in n.y which is unfortunate. Anyway, another great video! :)

this brings me back to when i lived in the Adirondacks for 93 days, alot like how youre doing it, from March til June. sleeping under a blue tarp tied off in an A Frame, (we couldnt build shelters) and only using using a Flint and Steel File along with a Quartz spark rock i found, and char-cloth for fires, i later learned how to bow drill fires, and i had to bait and trap my food, got water from streams and rivers and cleaning with iodine tablets. god i miss it. (it was a wilderness expedition thingy for "troubled youths" lmao )

First time I smoked a rainbow I forgot all about brining it. My, it was smokey... but it was also close to inedible. That was hot-smoking so it was cooked in the smoke. Never missed out the brine process again. If at the ocean rather than a loch you can use sea water for a simple brine base but it really needs a bit of salt added so the brine works its stuff. Mackerel smokes maybe better than nearly anything else.. Yum. Brining kills bacteria as well as augment the flavour of the smoke in the fish. Without salt in the process you only taste smoke in your fish was what I found. With your brine you can add other flavouring ingredients like molasses or elderberries or rose hips or a bit of cider vinegar, whatever you have access to. A bit of garlic salt added doesn't do any harm either.

It's funny, the songs we come up with out in the sticks. My honeymoon was spent backpacking about 18 miles and climbing a 14k ft mountain. As we were taking a break to go to the bathroom, the glow of sunrise was juuuust growing on the horizon... Our song: Yellow snow, yellow snow, while I watch the alpinglow. Pack comes off, pants come down, marmots chirping all around. I still lmbo over that song and it was written in June of 2014! 🤣

Fowler, there is a way when cleaning a trout to take out ALL the bones in ONE second, leaving the body intact. I have never seen it on KZbin, when I make a video on it I will be sure to tell you right away. Nobody believes it til I show them in person, then their jaw drops to the floor, lol. Awesome video, love that speed-hook! God bless. -Kevin & Nugget

Love the speed hook idea. Oh in case you ever have to survive in the artic circle heard how the natives catch a polar bear. Cut a hole about 2 -3 feet across put out something shiny over the top of the hole, to attract the bear then hide in a snow bank wait until the bear to come investigate... then you jump up real quick and kick him in the IceHole....

the 3" long tines of the fishing arrowheads would make great speed hooks. Even springy, fire-treated forks of saplings would probably suffice to hook fish a lot better than just a plain old hook.

15:56 You might want to set that differently. Now the line is in straight contact to the VERY sharp ice. Not to mention the pain when opening the hole again off from ice. What we do in Finland is that we tie the line at the end of a longer stick that we put all the way down under the ice's bottom. Then secure the stick with horizontal stick like that. This way there is no way that the line will ever cut because of the ice OR when we open up the hole again after a cold night. Also what's pretty nice thing to do is to create a U-shaped piece of wood (or Y-branch) and then loop some extra line on it. This allows us to adjust the depth of the lure. Damn I wish I could draw a picture of the set up.

I used to ice fish often. One awesome reuse of a fish part for bait is the eyeball. For whatever reason, one fish eye will stay on a hook through repeated fish being caught. These were all trout though. A toothier critter my limit the mileage on said eyeball.

You'd need a hole in the ground going into (under) the fire from outside your shelter, that would help redirect the smoke and evacuate it faster. Increasing the heat output of a fire also reduces the amount of smoke it produces ... just need to have some form of good aeration to remove the carbon dioxide buildup. Especially considering the greenhouse effect you have going with that transparent tarp. If you could, I would have put a heavier (non transparent) tarp over the one you already have, and create air evacuating channels and windows in the one above, basically layering the "roof".

Recently went out with kids, three feet of ice, was minus 23C, warmed up nice when wind stopped, was a windy day, but man the ice was deep, was thinking that cold steel shovel would not do as well as the chisel type.... would be worth seeing a comparison in deeper cold and thicker ice.... thanks for sharing though.
