Fox and the Feesh - Happy Birthday RonRon

Today RonRon is 6 years old!! Just as for his 3rd birthday 3 years ago, we present RonRon with a pool full of a dozen shiners/baitfish, which he catches most foxily!

Ron is a pet red fox I bought from a licensed exotic animal breeder, in Oklahoma, captive-bred and hand-raised. My state of Arkansas allows pet foxes without any permit needed.
He enjoys a large outdoor habitat and also a small indoor caged spot in my living room. Foxes are said to make 'bad' pets, but I would rather say foxes make wonderful pets!... just rather destructive, moody pets, NOT FOR CHILDREN.

i understand that, but it is sufficient. I wouldn't actually mind if the fox ate them all, or at least most. Besides, that fox is clearly well stimulated without the hunt. Let me put it this way, my rottweiller has strong kill instinct, very strong. 'Domestic' dogs are not as domestic as people think, aside from perhaps toy dogs and labs. I find other ways, like hiding food and various games. One thing is for sure, if i did let them hunt i would make damn sure the kill was not wasted or unduly dragged out. There where injured fish flopping about all over. I have nothing against meeting an animals needs, but it should be done with a bit of care. I am not hating on it.

Absolutely hysterical! I have a fox family with 6 kits living on my property. They were run out of their original den, because of construction in the area, and evidently relocated under my shed. They play a great deal, and are adorable to watch, but you have given me a great idea. Thanks so much. I'm going to purchase a small pool so they can play. I'm not happy this fox is in a cage, but I don't know why and if he has to be, this guy's doing it absolutely perfectly. Did anyone else see the size of his containment, let alone the amount of enrichment that's provided? I don't know why he's not in the wild anymore though. Maybe he was an orphan, in which case he's a super lucky fox.
