Join us for a look at a veteran’s account. Meet Ebenezer Fox and experience the chicken soup recipe he left behind. This isn’t from a period cookbook - this one comes from his memory of a meal made after a long day’s march in 1779. In addition, we use clues from the text to identify the regiment he is marching with during his brief service with the American army.

The late Patrick McManus wrote a story about hunters making soup in the tall timber. What ever was in their back packs went in to the pot. Sans spice and probably no salt I bet this is bland, but beats the heck out of ships bread and water

What are some practices that troops would do to clean their mess kits after cooking? To keep flies and other pests away of course. Just really curious.

Will: Why didn't the carrot greens go into the soup pot along with the root part of the carrot? I find it difficult to believe that hungry soldiers would have let those greeens go to waste. Carrot greens are perfectly edible. As a leafy green they're a great replacement for herbs, parsley and spinach. Respectfully, W.S.

Ya salt you find out later after cooking a soldiers fare of any sort. You greatly missed it, took on some cooking for a haversack program at a site and went with a daily ration and a cooking kettle. Fresh beef, some okay pieces and then just some flour that I added some water and made into dumplings. Won't taste at all amazing or worth writing about but it will be filling. Truly see why such things like salt or even salted products as salt pork was such a sought after food.

No salt! ☹ Salt was hard to come by during the Revolution, though, wasn't it?

The British down right targeted sources of salt in the colony and greatly limited any getting to the Continental army. Not for just the sake of taste buds but for limiting any creation of preserved items like salt pork, fish, biscuit and so forth. Joseph P. Martin finds himself a barrel and writes how its was more valuable then gold, filling every pocket he had of the greatly needed resource.
