It all comes down to money in the end. If you refuse to settle and insist on going to trial you have to be sure your case is cast-iron. The only people who ever win are the lawyers, and it isn't unknown for people to win a court case and still have only token damages awarded, or even to have to bear their own costs. Murdoch has deep pockets and he's a nasty reputation as a street-fighter, so maybe this was the best outcome for the plaintiffs, if not for democracy. Frankly the sooner Murdoch drops off the twig, the safer the world will be.
