The lack of transparency regarding the textbook rejections makes me think the CRT issue is being used as a cover for certain figures in the Florida state legislature to approve only books published by companies in which they own stock. There's some math going on here, alright.

Apparently, the textbook contents are "proprietary," so I guess we'll know what the problem was should the publishers give consent to make the material public. That said, there is a movement to insert political stuff into math curricula. Also another one to adjust grading standards to be open-ended. I assumed these movements were small, but I wouldn't put it past Florida to be overzealous in trying to spot manifestations of it.
@kristypenner2753
@kristypenner2753 2 жыл бұрын
What kind of politics do they want to insert into math textbooks? Also, critical race theory has nothing to do with math, nor schools below the university level. Critical race theory is only taught in high level university classes. What is wrong with Republicans? Why do conservatives have to lie so obviously to attract voters?
@somexp12
@somexp12 2 жыл бұрын
@@kristypenner2753 An example one educator proposed and implemented was having students count the number of liquor stores in different neighborhoods. (She gave a TED talk about it if you want to look it up.) DeSantis' spokesperson also cited a Missouri example where a teacher assigned a bunch of word problems about Maya Angelou. I assumed this was too small to show up in textbooks yet, but there *is* a movement to use math class as an excuse to talk about a million different things other than math. There's also a movement to make grading more open-ended so that teachers can effectively pick and choose whom they pass. (I had guidelines for this approach linked to me by someone who advocated it.) I'm aware of CRT as a legal subject, thank you. I've probably known that for years before you did, as the word only recently hit the mainstream. Thoroughly explaining why this is irrelevant hair splitting would take a minute, but even crt advocates will define it as something other than a legal subject. Part of the answer, however, is that critical theory, broadly, isn't a legal subject at all. A "critical theory" is defined as any theory intended to delegitimize the established order. This could be anything and could apply anywhere. It's mostly just happenstance that crt found its home in law, as its principles partially predate its formal founding at Harvard Law (crt advocates will tell you this under certain conditions). Now, it is a different question whether the examples I gave are examples of this broader understanding. I think the word is overused by conservatives, but there are concrete things out there that warrant attention regardless of what you call them.

@@somexp12" having students count the number of liquor stores in different neighborhoods" seems like practical use of math in class. I look at how many pubs and betting shops there are in any area to know its economy. That is not a racial perspective, that is in poor white areas of the UK.

So I'm German... and the efforts made in the USA to ban schoolbooks on history (or any historical fact that could make the children feel bad for what their ancestors did) give me a real bad feeling. Here in Germany we're talking a lot about our darkest times in history class. And that's really the right thing to do (in my opinion).

That's because Germany went through the era where they were the "bad people", waging a world war almost by themselves (and almost winning too); in the process, Germans learned humility which allowed them to see what went wrong and take steps to prevent it. US hasn't gotten to that part yet. In fact, the US have been sheltered from having to suffer consequences of waging wars (9/11 being the only "consequence" if you will), especially not a war thought on its own turf. Even when losing a war (Vietnam, Afghanistan), the reality didn't really settle in for those not actively fighting there and so, the ego remained. The ego is sustained through the usual "greatest country on Earth" slogans, frantic flag waving and so on. The last chance for anything of significance to happen, in my opinion, was punishing the insurrection participants and, even more importantly, their leaders. But 1.25 years later, still almost nothing: just a few guys in jail (literally), while the main instigators (re: politicians) are not only walking around freely, but most still in positions of power. So, my friend, you are absolutely right to have bad feeling (just look at how many politicians are calling out nuclear strikes in Russia, as if fallout will be restricted there). Country is ran mostly on "feeling" instead of facts. I'm pretty scared myself, by proxy (as a Canadian, because the US winds of thought, politics and economic actions). Sometimes, someone still asks why my wife and why don't want kids; well, let's say that arguments against keep pilling up every year.

A.R., In my opinion too. I have a bad feeling when I hear American politicians rape and distort European's gruesome 20th century. Simply because their "acadamic" education sucks royally. They leave their schools knowing nothing. It's even worse: they are not interested- the universe outside planet America is of no relevance to them. Surprisingly many politicans appear to know very little about America's history.... Cocooning cavemen. "But we have seen the pyramids! And Chernobyl! All in one week! And we also visited... which country was it, honey?" "A much too hot island somewhere in the American Ocean. They didn't even have a Disney theme park."

While knowing the truth about history is important, history is largely about people who have already died. Which is relevant since we have a ban in germany on commemorating politicians while they are still alive as well as a ban on advertising in schools. The most recent politician I learned about in school was JFK, noone currently serving or campaigning would ever make it into a schoolbook over here.

When trying to figure out the motivations behind any republican action, the investigation is pretty easy: follow the money. Things might sound like racism, virtue signaling, power hungriness or just outright absurd but they tend to be cover for some grift (and in some cases, just as an added bonus for them). This banning of textbooks is probably only 2 or 3 hours away from a basic journalistic investigation which will figure out that contracts were given to republican friendly or donating entities and the 41% that were banned where liberal leaning or non-donating entities. Same thing with Tucker and the whole testosterone nonsense - visit any of the websites of the talking heads parroting Tucker's dribble and you will be sure to find an assortment of donate buttons and full offerings of bacon flavored snake oil and bullshark energy drinks that are probably less effective than your everyday Red Bull. The conservative ideology today is to exploit every possible grievance, annoyance, bitterness, hate, fear and inadequacy in order to generate revenue for the person up on the box - the ultimate victim is Western Democracy.

So what was the last wanting what we've got now wars going on all of the world tons of money being sent to other countries, insanely high cost of everything, high interest rates, left loved promoting BLM yet the whole movement did nothing but pad the pockets of a handful of people while doing nothing for black communities, logical people in other countries have no respect for our leadership here we're in a flipping clown show like a Twilight zone and that's the kind of thing that people who watch Colbert seem to love cuz he does 🙄🤦

These studies were conducted before 2004, and there hasn't been much research since. It seems that the rate of testosterone serum decline of 1% - 2% per generation , although a significant issue for the future in terms of fertility, isn't as urgently concerning as other more immediate risks facing humanity. That Gen Z are reaching puberty in the new normal range of 8yrs - 14yrs is concerning. I am also concerned by the number of girls put on The Pill , for years, by doctors, and the impact that will have on their long term physical and mental health. It has become standard practice to manage menstrual symptoms, which many now have.

I saw no racism just because it was a fat black person as opposed to a fat white one, but I can say without a doubt that it is both who have the fat issue, especially in poor red towns. In this town, it is repulsive because too many times I've seen fat black women, fat white women, and fat white men come in to the store where I work. What makes it disgusting is that too often, their kids are already huge by 3 years old. I swear they ought to get a visit from DFCS. Oh, and seeing a fat black man is a rarity, just FYI.

'Servant of Satan' TV series Kvartal 95 and 1+1 introduce a new comedy horror TV series in 2022 entitled "Servant of Satan". It is an apocolyptic TV series in which global celebrity actor, vlodymir zelensky, stars as an anti-christ in the role of the president of Ukraine. His job is to fight for his "big guy" boss satan with his team of unconscious new/old world order disciples to kill every last Ukrainian and Russian human in satanic 'hell on Earth' 'war' blood sacrifice rituals as he seeks his throne on the world stage to provoke a nuclear WW III in which 95% of humanity [and planet Earth] is annihilated as additional blood sacrifices to satan. This TV series is a black magic sequel to the black magic hit Ukrainian TV series entitled "Servant of the People" which was used as the pitch fork to bring the anti-christ zelensky into his current role of president. Actually Stephen, although testosterone levels may not define who we are as men on a fundamental level, it does in fact have major effects on our personalities, abilities, etc. My testosterone levels plummeted following treatment for testicular cancer (I'm still here, but my ball isn't, if ya catch my drift). The effects were startling. I went from being the kind of person who can get by on a few hours sleep, to being unable to stay awake through the afternoons. In addition to the debilitating fatigue and the crushing headaches that accompanied it, I became a short-tempered crank, put on tons of weight, and suffered 'brain fog'. My mood was low and I didn't find joy in those things which had always been sources of happiness before. All of these physical and psychological effects took a toll on my progressional performance, my social life, and my relationships. So yeah, testosterone is really important. What it is not, however, is the making of a man. My idea of manhood is not about being aggressive or physically strong - it's about caring for those in your life, meeting your responsibilities, and standing up for what is right (it's not a coincidence that being a good man is very similar to being a good woman, because it's about being a decent human being). Those men who feel threatened by femininism or LGBTQ rights, or who use violence to prove their masculinity, etc. are actually the antithesis of being a true man. I am on Testosterone Replacement Therapy and it has made a huge difference. I can stay awake past noon without a hot flash causing the sweats. It has definitely allowed me to be the man that I am, but it would be absurd to suggest that the testosterone itself is at the heart of my manhood.

when me and my teenage daughter moved down to Florida many years ago I put her in back in school since she was halfway through 9th grade. Well, I found out how bad SC schools were. The ninth grade in Florida was a year ahead from the ninth grade in SC. Since they are banning all those textbooks in Florida I guess now SC is going to be ahead of Florida now. Cool! It sucks to be near the bottom in education.

When my family moved from Massachusetts to Arizona in the 1970's the schools were so far behind that over the three or so years we lived there the only NEW things I learned in grade school (5th to 7th) were how to balance a checkbook, model rocketry, and how to use a Honeywell-connected computer to play Zork. When we moved back to Massachusetts afterward, I had to scramble to catch up.

I feel badly for students that go on to university from schools that are substandard in America. I knew someone from TN who got high marks in high school, and then went to a Canadian university. He was completely lost. The math was unlike anything he had been taught before. For example, he took Latin in high school, but it had somehow not prepared him at all for a first year class at university. He was unable to understand the math taught in a first year astronomy class. It was really sad that the curriculum at his high school was insufficient to send him on to university. I've heard that some kids that get scholarships to Ivy League universities in the USA, and can be lost when they get to them. High school did not teach them the skills and knowledge they needed to move on to a higher education. I went to university here in Canada after going to a regular (not private) Canadian high school, and did very well in all my classes. I'm not sure how education became so neglected in the United States, especially since they have some of the best universities in the world. Why don't they prepare their students to go to them?

@Kristy Penner Nationwide standards were supposed to be the point of our “common core”, but 4 states neglected to adopt it from the start and several more (like Florida) pulled out along the way. The education isn’t failing everywhere here though, we do still have students who excel at university despite ongoing efforts to turn this into Idiocracy. On the surface, the banning of those books sounds really bad. When I first heard that, I thought to myself "How can a MATH book be racist?" but I saw some excerpts from some of the proposed books, and it does make it pretty clear and obvious why they were banned. I don't recall the exact wording, but one of the math books was doing a problem about statistics and basically said all police everywhere racially profile black people, and the problem was calculating some difference between black and white people based on that. And yeah, now I totally understand why they don't want kids being taught this way. That isn't teaching them "math", that is trying to subtly influence their way of thinking. The same problem could've been done with an infinite number of alternate scenarios or situations, but when a lot of them are basically telling the kid "The US is all racist, everyone is out to get you" it is kind of a problem. This is a MATH book, it should be about math, not sociopolitical issues. When you politicize a math book, it should be banned because its no different than doing math problems asking about the percentages of politicians that are corrupt or something like that, it doesn't matter if there is some truth to it, you shouldn't be politicizing mathematics.

I predict that of the textbooks that were rejected, many of them won’t turn out to be rejected based on content at all. Of the ones that have questionable content, 100% of the questionable content will be related to Common Core.
