I just bought my first truck 2020 f150 XLT 2 weeks ago and I appreciate the information on this video, it’ll help me make a more informed decision while budgeting and planning for upgrading the suspension on my truck in the future .

Love to hear it! Lots of good options for that truck now, pay attention to going up driveways, potholes / speed bumps, and how the truck reacts AFTER the bump.

Thanks for the great video. I have a stock FJ cruiser and I’m looking to have a 1.5-2 inch lift and 33 inch tires. I’m not sure which suspension upgrade I should go for. I want an upgrade that gives me a smoother ride in my everyday drive and also give me good capabilities for off road sand driving. I appreciate your recommendation on which model I should go for?
@ShockSurplus
@ShockSurplus 11 ай бұрын
Fox just released a Performance Elite version of their 2.5 coilovers and shocks which are a little bit more plush and would be a perfect choice from the Fox line. Since you already will want an aftermarket upper control arm to make clearing those 33s easier, you can run the extended travel parts for a little more useable wheel travel even if you do not plan on running the full 3" of lift they are capable of

Where would the Toyota TRD Pro Fox Shocks fall at with these other Fox shocks in comparison?
@ShockSurplus
@ShockSurplus 2 жыл бұрын
They would close to like a BP51 because of the internal bypass that both the TRD Pro Fox and OME BP51 come with. But they are not close to the Fox 2.5 DSC as they don't have the reservoir or the adjustable feature.

I keep hearing high speed off roading, what speed are we talking about. I ask, because we are limited to under 60mph on our sand islands and beaches in Australia, so I was wondering if a 2.0 ifp for my fj cruiser would be enough as that’s all they offer here in fox.
@ShockSurplus
@ShockSurplus Жыл бұрын
when we talk speeds, we mean shaft speeds. So 30mph through very tough terrain bouncing off bumpstops constantly would be categorized as high speed. when the piston and shaft speeds of the shock are high, then thats where the high speed compression and rebound damping comes into play. Low speed is cruising the beaches with barely any suspension movement, but you could be doing 60. Hope that makes sense.

Question 1 Does Fox plan on releasing 3.0’s for the Ram 1500? Question 2 on the 2.5 DSC, can you adjust the settings to limit washboard effects but also keep body roll limited?
@ShockSurplus
@ShockSurplus 10 ай бұрын
We have not heard Fox have any plans for 3.0s for Ram 1500s. Their sales on the 2.5s are fairly slow, so they will likely need to see more numbers for that application before they decide to make a 3.0. What you are describing in question two is the main benefit of the DSC. Most of your bump stiffness is tuned on the high speed knob and body roll and unwanted body motions are managed on the low speed knob.

@@ShockSurplus awesome thanks for the feedback. A few weeks ago I swapped my stock bilsteins with the fox 2.0 purchased through you guys. Night and day improvement in ride comfort with little to no additional body roll. In the future I would like to get the small road imperfections/washboard tuned out even more.

Are the 2.5 DSC the same as what you get on the gladiator mojave minus the DSC?
@ShockSurplus
@ShockSurplus Жыл бұрын
We just did a quick check on both the Gladiator Mojave Trim with the Fox 2.5 Internal Bypass with External Reservoir compared to the Fox 2.5 DSC. OEM Jeep Fox 2.5 Internal Bypass with External Reservoir and comes with a 1" front lift. It does not have any adjustment control. Fox 2.5 DSC does not have the Internal Bypass but does come with an External Reservoir. These also come with the DSC feature that provides low and high-speed compression adjustment. They offer variation iterations as well for different lift heights. The next option that would be like the OEM Fox 2.5 but with more features would be the Fox 3.0 series. Which has the OEM Fox 2.5 Internal Bypass and all the features like the Fox 2.5 DSC but in a 3" body.

@@ShockSurplus good explanation. Are the mojave 2.5 worth keeping or upgrade? I'm assuming I'd definitely have to replace if I install a 2" lift being the travel or length. Thanks in advance
@ShockSurplus
@ShockSurplus Жыл бұрын
Out of the box it's quite a good shock as is. However, if you're planning to build to more for off-roading, losing the internal bypass would give less comfort but the Fox 2.5 DSC would work for lifted application and provide more control while off-roading.
@Seekfreedomco

They're going to feel very similar, maybe a little tighter than the 3.0s, but definitely one of the better options for the JK. www.shocksurplus.com/products/fox-2-5-factory-series-internal-bypass-w-dsc-shocks-set-for-2007-2018-jeep-wrangler-4wd-rwd-w-2-5-4-lift

How do you pre measure your height before you put the shocks on? Say i wanted a 1 inch lift, where do i measure from?
@ShockSurplus
@ShockSurplus Жыл бұрын
It depends on the vehicle, but for the most part you will want to measure from the center of the wheel to the top of the wheel well or fender opening to determine your initial height. From there, many of the coilovers and struts give you recommended preload measurements for various lift heights in their instructions. If they do not give you an idea of out-of-the-box lift height or where 1" of lift is on the coilover itself, you will have to install the coilovers to see where they are. We recommended taking it around the block a couple times to settle first, and then repeat your measurements from the first step if you are unhappy with where it is sitting at the out-of-the-box settings. Once you have determined how much lift they are at out of the box, and the instructions do not give you a recommended preload setting for the lift height you want, then you will want to get an idea of motion ratio. Toyotas and Nissans have about a 2:1 motion ratio while everything else with independent front suspension is around 1.5-1.75:1. Motion ratio is the ratio of wheel travel to shock travel with 2:1 indicating for every 2" of wheel travel the strut, shock, or coilover will only compress or extend 1". You can roughly determine the motion ratio by measuring the distance between the frame pivot bushings and ball joint on the lower control arm as well as where the shock is mounted relative to those points. If let's say your lower control arm is 20" from bushing to ball joint and the front coilover mounts 10" from the frame pivot bushings or basically the middle of the arm, that is a 2:1 motion ratio. If that shock was mounted 13" from the frame pivot bushings and 7" from the ball joint that leaves you with right around 1.5:1 motion ratio (1.538:1 to be exact). Basically, you just divide control arm length by the distance from the frame pivots to where the shock is mounted, and you should be in the ballpark for motion ratio. From there, you will have a rough preload adjustment needed for the lift height you are looking for. If let's say you are at 2" of lift out of the box on something with a 2:1 motion ratio and you would like to drop to 1" of lift, a good place to start would be by backing off preload by half an inch. That motion ratio should mean that a half-inch change at the coilover equates to around an inch at the wheel. If you are at the same height with something with a 1.5:1 motion ratio and need a 1" drop you would back off preload by 2/3". This is not a perfect science, since oftentimes springs will start to act a little differently as you get to the extremes of their recommended preload range, but it is a good way to at least get close enough to your desired height that any further adjustments can be eyeballed.
