I actually think the show makes a very interesting case of what It should be like to cast ploymorph on yourself, not wildshape, How the mental state can be roleplayed, like when she laters uses it to turn into a bear to track the scent of Elias, you got to keep It simple

She had fur, it wasn’t cold with the fur on lol. All joking aside it was the fox’s instinctive curiosity that made her leave, and Elias reminding her of what was important to her that made her stay.

Its funny how in animal form, generally regardless of what it is, she smiles more and feels more free than she does when human. But I suppose those are the perks, the downsides being your memory, reasoning and generally state of mind. It also makes me wonder what calls to her so deeply as to forget everything and one.

That was what happened, the fox's curiosity and animal instincts were calling to her, she was about to leave, to be taken over by them, but Ruth needed to find out if these corresponded to her heart's desires, so he made her recall Elias. When he showed up and said he needed her and missed her, that was much more important in her heart. It shows that being free from her troubles and running away from them is a big part of her heart, but being with a family that loves and needs her is a much more vital part of who she is, part of the core of her being.

Plus, Mages/Magi aren't... exactly human I'd say. They are quite a bit like fey, but not as extreme. Even by sorcerers/alchemist (think Nasuverse magecraft) who knew how to look underneath exterior mask Chise was quite beast like, following her whims, desires and intuition. Rahab and Lindel aren't that much different while Elias is a straight up wizard from fairy tales. Polite, well-put and willing to help, but also mischievious and prone to outbursts.
