Fox Village in Japan: The Fluffiest Place on Earth! (Miyagi Zao, Shiroishi) キツネ村

Come in autumn or winter! (They shed their fur in summer, thus making them look like their usual thin/sickly self). - Other than being nocturnal, foxes are also mostly crepuscular (active at twilight). - The bark of a fox is also called a 'gekker'. - You can actually pet the foxes BUT only if there are young ones available. (This is because they aren't that finicky with the human touch yet). - I happened to be wearing a jacket with FAKE fur (it was not planned). I do NOT own any real fur as I do not condone it. - It IS cheap to get into the Fox Village, but it is not cheap to get there, so indeed, it's quite a special (expensive) trip. It's best to have a JR Rail Pass (iamaileen.com/japan-rail-pass-guide/) so the train rides will end up as FREE for you. - If you don't want to take a taxi, there's a bus that operates only on Tuesdays to Fridays and it's called Castle-kun line that goes to Kawarago Damn from the station around 8AM and 4PM. The Fox Village is not a regular stop though, so you have to let the driver know. (Cost: ¥200 yen one way). ↪ P.S.: If you hate zoo environments or any sort of animal enclosure no matter if the conditions are well and good (as per what I witnessed during my visit), I suggest that you don’t visit this place or it will make you uncomfortable. As for me, I just try to keep an open mind; plus, I don’t immediately shun every animal park, especially if the animals are well-cared for (unless it's otherwise - do let me know). If it helps to note, foxes are one of the few animals who don’t suffer any type of stress when under captivity - but of course, I do know that it's ideal to rather let them be in the wild... Yet again, their chances of survival in the wild are very slim, especially with today's times. Looking at the facts, a fox in the wild has an average life span of 2-4 years only because of diseases, hunting practices, and road accidents; but in places like this Fox Village, they can live up to 14 years. (Besides, you cannot imagine the number of people who would ‘kill’ for fox fur, nor the number of people who do fox hunting for fun/sport).

I think it's less of a punishable thing and more of a warning. Despite this being a fox sanctuary, these foxes are wild. They're socialised to humans in their presence, but they aren't tame. Trying to touch or hug these wild foxes will likely see you get bitten, something the sanctuary staff undoubtedly want to avoid.

It's very true though it's often underestimated just how curious foxes are they also really love shiny things in fact there was a family of foxes that used to live next to one of the villages I lived in and tourists would often report that the foxes stole everything from their phones to their cutlery to even their wedding rings

I'm pretty sure they're trained. In nara they always bow in the hope they get a deer biscuit. In Miyajima you're not allowed to feed them, hence no tricks from them.

Also, If you have anything that even slightly resembles the crinkling of a plastic bag, expect to be attacked by like 30 deers at once, they're pretty chill though. While it's less fluffy to go in spring, there's also a special event in spring where you are allowed to pet and hold the fox kits. That's what I read at least. Me and my gf are definitely going here, and we will have great difficulty not giving all the fuzzballs a hug
