BBC Fox Wars Documentary narrated by Rebecca Front and directed by Leon Hunt. Interesting and balanced documentary, showing both sides of peoples' views on urban foxes.
An important point this documentary does raise is that humans feeding urban foxes definitely encourages them to come back night after night.
Do urban foxes need the assistance of humans to survive given the abundance of food that we throw out in our towns and cities?
Unfortunately, this documentary doesn't really offer much advice for those looking to keep urban foxes out of their garden. The deterrent products shown are listed below, however the most effective fox deterrent is not featured, but can be read about here:

Yoshiga Victory Humans are the most intelligent species of animal on earth, and the most invasive ones too. I think with the first attribute, we could keep the second in check. Survival of the fittest is an easy argument, until you fuck up the ecosystem, and your "fittest"ness will leave you nowhere to live as the glorious strongest lifeform you imagine yourself to be. Being the fittest doesn't just mean we can kill anything... It means we can stay alive under many circumstances, and we would help that case a lot of we kept balance.
@CaiCanMake
@CaiCanMake 11 жыл бұрын
I would rather like to think that there needs to be a balance between the two options; no, of course don't over-hunt, of course that will significantly damage the environment. however, the foxes are also seeming to be forming a dependency on humans who feed them (I don't accuse you of feeding wild animals, but that seems like the general argument in the documentary). When the humans stop feeding them or quit supplying them food in general, the foxes will be forced to relocate, and will have more difficulty hunting (in theory). in other words, feeding the foxes is making them too soft to fit in the wild. but yes, I see your point.
@1234kalmar
@1234kalmar 11 жыл бұрын
Yoshiga Victory You do have a point... Foxes are crafty, but there is a chance some of them will become softies. Still, the vast majority of them would do just fine. Animal rescuers often say foxes are the easiest to send back in to the wilds after rehabilitation.

Both are being dumb. I never feed foxes and usually try to keep a distance from them. They are supposed to fear humans. Because people think they're so darn cute and adorable, they've actually put them in greater danger. However people who hate foxes are stupid because they act like these animals are just pure evil. They aren't - they're just animals. personally, I think the best way to control the population of foxes is that we don't give them a reason to be around humans in the first place.

Foxes are highly intelligent, incredibly athletic (far more than your average dog) and have very big appetites. It makes them relentless predators. Hard to say what the answer is to keeping them from killing domestic animals. I have always heard that dog poo is a great deterrent, because it is the scat of a predator (to the foxes).

The only thing I hate about these documentaries are these comments sections. People have valid reasons for not wanting the foxes running a muck in their abodes and farms, Especially the farms because those chickens are probably their main source of income. I'm not saying you gotta seek the animals out or anything, but why demonize the people who don't want them around?

I really think feeding the foxes is causing the problem. You really shouldn't feed wild animals. It's obvious that they cause problems to other people who don't want them there. I get you love foxes but feeding them is basically bringing them to their death. They could kill pet bunnies, cats or small dogs. Some have small children.

Good for the team at 18:22 for giving every fox a chance and making efforts to co-exist with foxes, ie. boarding up areas they can get into such as a shed. In Vancouver BC, raccoons live in the city just like foxes do in London. People keep their garbages secured, cover holes in garages/sheds/attics/under stairs ect.. people co-exist with urban wildlife, not harm them.

If the foxes need food they have to hunt for it in the woods not in the farms. I don't hate foxes but there place is in the woods not in the cities. I respect the wild life but the foxes are not pets, in that case they become pests. I have few ducks in my backyard and the foxes did catch twice one of my ducks in the middle of the day... I manage to save it twice but I thing there won't be like that next time, so my option is to get ger rid of the foxes that come in my garden.... They shit on my doorstep, they dig in the garden, they bring all kind of wrabish, destroying everything. So if I have to kill a fox in my garden I will. Nothing else will sort the problem. I respect the animals and every creature on our planet has his role but I don't think the foxes has any role in the cities or farms. Someone will say they hunt rats but they don't hunt only them. If I have rats I will set traps for them and I do that. As long as I can shoot them I will, if I see a fox in the garden I don't miss the chance. The foxes are not like most predators, the kill not only to eat but for fun and sport... we don't talk for a normal predator li wolf, bear, lion, tiger and so on, these animals kill for food, but the fox is more like a serial killer. So my opinion is as long as they killing the livestock they have to be killed. And my advice is if someone is going to sort it's problem by killing a fox it has to be humanly cuz after all no living creature deserve to suffer.

Foxes are beautiful animals, but they do cause a bit of damage. I think the best way to keep them out of the yards of people who dont enjoy the company is to check all entrances the foxes can slip through and close them up. That's what you get for neglecting your duty to have a dog in the family. I'm my single experience of fox deterrent from a farm I found that a single .22 salt pellet from a low powered air rifle planted right in the fox's a$$ cheek was enough to see it gone for good. I've also been told that a good bodyshot with a paintball gun, pure orange juice, urine and even a spud-gun have all worked to keep a specific fox from coming back.

I like how people in the UK are complaining about little foxes while here in the US we have coyotes, wolves, bears, and big cats. Be thankful you only have foxes to worry about and not the big predators that can kill big livestock. I don't take to killing them though after all this was their home first we are the ones who moved in and changed the rules on them. But I know what it's like to live in the country where you've got to worry about coyotes and cougars killing your animals.
@katicus7987
@katicus7987 10 жыл бұрын
Not a very good argument since farmers in the US still kill coyotes, bears, big cats, foxes and even wolfs. It's not about sport or hate, they are protecting their live stock. I'm sure if you payed them 500 dollars for every time they killed all their chickens or whatever they wouldn't mind, so you going to pay them? You forgot Bigfoot, chupacabra and lizardmen to, we should plant mines for those buggers. No matter where you go people are moving into their land and they will come to town no matter what. The problem is those people who feed them every night so they get use to being fed and think coming into town is a free meal ticket. We have the same problem with bears, even if you put them to sleep they will come back or eventually our population gets bigger and the problem continues. It's a good thing animals can't use guns because we'd be fucked.

Above cats, foxes are my favourite animal. So I hate it when they get put down like they're nothing. In sub-urban areas where people keep chickens, ducks, cats, rabbits and so on, it's a relief to hear that some pest controllers will simply relocate the fox instead of shooting them. But in rural places where farmers keep livestock, foxes are already in their natural habitat, so where can they be moved to?

+polonose 00 Do you realise that farms are built on top of countryside habitats? E.g. that pasture full of cows was originally wild, habitat land XD So technically farms are foxes natural habitats as they started springing up on top of their habitat and they adapted to live around them. Not sure if this was exactly your point but still. At the end of the day land belongs to nobody, it's unfair for farmers to place their livestock where the foxes lived first and then kill them. If anything people are the intruders.

Tabby Kitten Obviously not. If you've ever had outdoor pets you'd understand. They break in, kill, and only eat 1/10 of what they kill.

I know. I had a rabbit called Mopsy. It was really sad, but the fox did come back to retrieve her, but we had already buried her.

Tabby Kitten It's not just that. When they get groups of prey animals, they will only kill 1, and even then barely eat any of that 1. With a single pet, you wouldn't be able to understand. But to see so many dead pets, without even a single bite taken out of them is terrible.

I live in Australia and foxes are feral here. They are my most favourite animal so naturally I'd love one for a pet but that dream won't come true because keeping a fox is illegal here. I guess my destiny is to love them from afar. They would be happier out in the wild anyway I guess.

Love the bloke who relocates them and volunteers his time. You can tell he was a rough bastard in his youth, but he's found a new path, and his compassion is immense. Foxes can be a pain though, hence, I appreciate them being dispatched quickly and humanely. Those old Fox hunts were freaking horrible mauled to death by a pack of dogs.

I love foxes, I live backing onto farmland, where the farmer keeps sheep, the lambs will be out in a matter of weeks. I also have free range chickens, who roam our large garden with our cat and dogs. The dog marks his territory, and, when no one’s looking so do I 😂😂😂😂😂 It seems to work. Plus, I can highly recommend the Omlet Eglu range of chicken coops, expensive but 100% worth it.

Olaf Klischat yes banned for home defense, but not banned for other uses such as sport, but even then the type of gun-pistols,rifle and shotguns,are still very limited. you will require a license. even police cant hold guns in public unless in extreme situations (in some towns they cant even walk around with them), but in affect it has still given the UK a low gun casualty and related murder rate, in comparison to a nation where everybody might want one for defense in paranoid neighbourhoods, not to mention criminals finding it much easier to acquire one in countries that sell them in the high st stores (main st)
